Sheriff Lonnie Greco is warning the public of another Internal Revenue Service (IRS) telephone scam that made its way to at least one parish resident late last week. The resident reported receiving two automated phone calls saying that the IRS was going to sue the resident and they should call telephone number 425-329-8669. That number is a spoofed number, which is subscribed to someone in the State of Washington. Since Friday, August 21, citizens from across the country reported receiving the same call. The calls apparently originated from scammers overseas. If anyone received a similar call from this number or any similar ones, please report the incident to the real IRS at the following:

• Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484 or, • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint. Residents may also contact the Sheriff’s Office at 504-564-2525.

SHERIFF WARNS PUBLIC OF IRS TELEPHONE SCAM

The IRS will never: • Angrily demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

• Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Capt. Hoop -- Continued

Our goal was to go out and get a limit of 4 amberjack then play the rest of the morning and head in about 11:30 or 12:00. This is going to be an easy trip. Why the heck do I ever think that way? I think I jinx myself.

I brought bait and we had no problem getting bait At our targeted rig the water was dirty and there was little to no current. I wanted to fish the up current side but the people on the rig said I could only fish one corner because they had a diver down doing work on the opposite side. Nice of them to even allow us to fish it under that situation. We lost our first amberjack. the second fish was a nice red snapper. It blew it’s air as it reached the surface as amberjack do so it went back without any problem after the photo.

Our quest for mangrove snapper did not happen. The Bermuda chubs were there stealing bait and occasionally getting hooked so they had something to pull on. Only one amberjack could be found on the down current side. I was happy to get that one.

My next move was to a rig 8 miles away. It is a large double rig but there were 3 recreational boats diving on it. I stayed out a bit and weeded through some red snapper. One of the guys after seeing the fight the fish were putting up told me he wanted a small amberjack. I explained a small legal one would hurt him. He got his wish. This one only made the legal size by an inch. That was all he wanted.

From there we headed in closer. Our third stop proved to be a waste. It was about 11:20 and only 2 amberjacks in the box. I contacted the other guys in the area and they were all struggling with the amberjacks. The head of the party told me he could stay out a bit longer so I started running out of the area and heading southwest. Suddenly I ran across a color change and turned to the rig nearby in clean water. This was the ticket. We started getting beeliners of good size. There was a lot of structure below and I was losing a lot of sinkers and hooks as the fish were winning the battle.

Along with the beeliners we were able to also find some almaco jacks and a scamp grouper also a rock hind grouper. We also battled several red snapper of good 8 to 12 pound size. Our best fish of the day had me take a long hard look at it. It got tangled up with another line and made a big mess. That mess was well worth it.

This was the biggest bearded Brotula I had ever seen. These are very good eating fish. Due to the extended time on the trip we never had the time to have it checked or even weighed. The guys just filled 2 large coolers with the fish as is. This saved us a lot of work but I think this may have been a contender for the top 10 list. Wish we had the time for it.

Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DIGITAL ASSETS WHEN YOU DIE?

by Jeffrey M. Salas • Partner, Salas Wang LLC

Increasingly, we are spending a lot more time online, whether for business, personal, social, and/or entertainment reasons—usually it’s some combination of all of these. Depending on your situation, you may have vast digital content, mementos, communications, etc. These are assets that would be in tangible form if not for technological advancements. What happens when we die with these digital assets? Estate and inheritance laws still haven’t caught up to the growing number of digital assets, but there are some things you can do to incorporate these items into your estate plan.

Password Protection and Estate PlanningThe issue with digital assets is that much of this content may be password protected, hosted by private corporations, or generally hard to access if you are not around. While digital asset protection is meant to protect your privacy, it becomes more difficult for your executor/heirs to access and use these digital assets after death. And, many of these assets are going to be subject to the terms and conditions of specific websites and companies that require your agreement when signing up for a particular service.

WHAT ARE DIGITAL ASSETS?Digital assets are anything that is not in tangible, physical form. Most people have a number of digital assets, just a few examples are: Email accounts Subscription services Music and video assets Picture and document storage Gaming assets Social media contentAs technology advances, many more of our assets will be digitized. While this often makes our lives more convenient, it presents unique issues when it comes to estate planning as digital assets are replacements for physical assets which would have historically passed in physical form via a will, trust, or intestate. But because of the realities of the extensive use of digital medium, these assets are now subject to any number of contracts and conditions. What Happens To My Facebook Account When I Die?Social media attracts millions upon millions of users. Based on statistics alone, many users will die with active accounts. Current laws, however, are mostly unprepared on how to handle these non-physical assets. So what does that mean for my digital assets? Well, first, you have to look at what your goal is.If I pass away, I want my account with a particular website to be: (1) saved; (2) deleted; or (3) transferred to another person. Now, this may differ depending on each service/account. This will also depend on terms of use for each of the services. For example, Facebook has a program where you can request your account to become a memorialized account for you or you can request deletion of your account.

Can I Estate Plan for Digital Assets after Death?Right now, beyond working with every company where you have a digital account, estate planning may have a major effect on how your digital assets are distributed. Estate plans, however, may not have all of the answers for digital assets. As mentioned above, digital assets are often governed by contracts with a specific provider. Some states have laws in place that allow digital assets to pass easily, but at this time, most do not.

So What Do I Do?

The best practice for digital asset management is to take a three-pronged approach:

1. Check The Provider’s Terms Of Use/Terms Of ServiceIf the provider has a plan in place for your digital assets after death, it is best you comply with those procedures to make sure you are achieving your particular goal with that particular account.2. Add Language To Your Will/TrustWhile this is largely untested in the courts, adding language that specifies your wishes with each of your accounts is a good idea. The law in this area is in flux, so make sure you have an estate plan that includes your digital assets. By doing so, you give the executor of your estate the legal tools they need to enforce your wishes. 3. Check Your State LawsState laws are also just popping up when it comes to digital assets. Making sure your estate plan is consistent with state law is very important. Also, the state law may have an effect on your terms and conditions and terms of use with your service provider.

The law still hasn’t caught up with our digital lifestyle, but with proper planning your digital assets can be protected by your estate plan. Properly managing these assets requires more work but with the importance of digital assets is growing every year, so protecting them properly is critical.

I had 5 yr old Alex and Chad his Dad the other day from Colorado. We went to Breton Island and caught a few trout before moving back inland to do some red fishing.

They cooperated along with the big Jacks.

Then, like father, like father, like son---when you gotta go, you gotta go!!

**WARNING** During the last couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in vehicle burglaries in our shopping center and restaurant parking lots. Some are unlocked doors, but these thieves have been more brazen and are now busting windows. Every car they break into have valuables in plain view! Example: purse, wallet, cell phone, cash, iPad, laptop, etc. Police detectives are currently investigating these burglaries, but in the mean time, please help us by: locking your doors, hiding your valuables from plain view, and by being vigilant.

HABLAMOSESPAÑOL

By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone! email me! [email protected]

Did you get to go to any of the craft shows they had this past weekend? There were lots around and the weather was absolutely beautiful! I was at Archbishop Shaw. They had their annual Shrimp and Jambalaya Cook Off. This year, they combined their Car Show and Craft Show with the Cook Off. I decided to spend my day at the craft show. I had a great time! There were a lot of talented venders there, it was a great day. I would like to thank everyone who came by my booth to say

hello. I appreciate all the compliments and the purchases. I have started working on your orders and will have them ready for you as quickly as I possibly

can. I also enjoyed talking to everyone about Young Living Essential Oils. I am learning, and as promised, I have been getting the answers to the questions you asked. You will be receiving a phone call from me soon.

Now, to tell you a little about today’s picture. Kelly (my daughter) is on the Parent Association Board at Shaw and her

main focus this year was the Car Show. She asked if I would make something for their Parade of Prizes. I figured what better way to

get people to think cool thoughts than something wintery. And one of my favorite artists had recently released her new designs. I just knew I had to do this one for me when I first saw it. Well, that didn’t turn out to be the case. I decided this would be a fun piece to paint and I would probably make a few of these. So I decided to

paint it all up and give it to Kelly for the Parade of Prizes. When it Is all finished it actually stands about 34 inches tall. I didn’t have to actual paint color she used in her design so we changed it up. Just had to mix up the colors we needed for highlighting and shading. This is a really simple piece and I am now getting ready for the holidays. I have ordered the patterns for a few more of her new designs. Can hardly wait for them to come in. I think the Snowman would look really cute standing by the front door to greet company or maybe beside the fireplace or Christmas Tree. Were would you place this cutie?

Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next craft project be? Mine…Not really sure, so many things I want to do. But, I know it will be fun.

Meet Mulan. She is an American Blue Heeler mix. Mulan is about 6 years old. She does absolutely great with children. She loves to run and play with other dogs. Mulan is very loving and just needs love and attention just like any other dog. She also likes to cuddle under blankets next to people. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on shots.

Hi! my name is Chloe. I am a beautiful black and orange calico who enjoys a good back rub anytime. I am a sweet, friendly, playful girl who has lots of to give. Snuggling and cuddling are a couple of my favorite things. Even though I am 10 years old, I still have plenty of spunk left in me. I have been spayed, microchipped, and I’m up to date on shots. Can you give me a forever home?

Hi! My name is Noel. I am a gorgeous black cat looking for love. I have lots of love to give. I am a calm cuddly girl who likes to curl up and just be with you. Can we curl up together and just enjoy life? I would love to hang out with you when you have your morning coffee. As laid back as I am, I still love to play, chase toys, and climb. I have been at PAWS for almost 2

years. I am so ready for my forever home. I am up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Can you give me a forever home?

Meet Abby! She is a 2 1/2 year old Lab Mix. Abby was adopted at just a few months old, and 2 years later returned because her owner was moving and couldn’t take her with him. As expected, Abby was terrified her first week of being back at the shelter. She still barks at everyone when they are outside her kennel. She would do better with a male dog and she isn’t sure how she feels about cats. She enjoys playing with her squeaky toys and giving kisses. She is a very friendly dog and loves people. Abby has been spayed, microchipped, and is up to date on shots.

SEPTEMBER – TIME TO CONSIDER DAYLILLIES - GARDEN MUMS

Garden mums are one of the more popular flowering bedding plants for providing landscape color in the fall. Mums provide “cool-season” color from September through early November before other cool-season bedding plants – such as dianthus, petunia, calendula, pansy, flowering cabbage, kale, snapdragon – begin their flower displays. When purchasing garden mums, to select plants for top quality and to select early and late flowering varieties. This extends the blooming sequence over several months instead of over just two to four weeks.

Garden mums should be planted in full to partial sun; soil also needs to be well-drained with some organic matter. Incorporate pine bark or peat moss into landscape beds when organic matter the year.Daylilies perform best in full sun – six to eight hours daily are ideal.Daylilies planted in partial shade may not bloom as prolifically and will have less intense flower color. Daylilies seldom flower well in a full shade situation.

As with most ornamental plants, daylilies do best in a well-prepared bed.A bed raised 6-8 inches with the addition of composted organic matter or pine bark is ideal. This raised bed will provide improved internal drainage and aeration, which improves root growth and reduces the probability of root rot.Daylilies grow vigorously, so you should space individual plants 18-24 inches apart. In addition, divide plants every three to four years to promote improved bloom.A light application of slow-release fertilizers also is recommended in the spring. But be careful mot to fertilize too heavily if planting this fall. Excessive fertilization will lead to excessive vegetative growth and possible cold damage. After planting, mulch daylilies with pine straw, pine bark nuggets, pine bark mulch or cypress shavings. A layer of mulch a couple of inches thick is sufficient, and be careful not to pile mulch immediately around the base of your plants. Mulch provides weed suppression, moisture conservation and improves visual appeal in a landscape.

BEETS MAKE FOR AN EASY FALL CROP.Beets are a popular vegetable in the fall vegetable garden because they are cold hardy and can withstand colder temperatures for longer amounts of time. Beets also do not need to be immediately harvested. One planting of beets can easily provide enough to harvest for 6-8 weeks. Beets do not have to be planted in the fall. They can also be planted in the spring. For a fall crop look to plant seeds around mid-August to early October. The plants should be ready to harvest around the second half of November. For spring plantings the plantings should be made in January and February to be harvested later in April and May. Be sure to start out with fresh beet seed because they germinate well and will produce a good stand. Spacing should be kept to only 2-3 inches apart. If planted too closely the individual plants will not have enough room to grow properly. They are several varieties available in the trade with ‘Ruby Queen’, ‘Detroit Dark Red’, ‘Red Acre’ (hybrid), ‘Chariot’ (hybrid), and ‘Scarlet Supreme’ (hybrid) all being recognized as recommended varieties for Louisiana.

SUCCESSIVE PLANTINGS KEEP ON GIVING.An interesting vegetable gardening concept to note is that of successive plantings. Many Louisiana gardeners will have overwhelming success with their vegetable crops and some may even run into the issue of harvesting too much produce at one time. Successive planting is a technique that involves planting crops at different time intervals (1-2 week apart). The idea is to extend the harvest season and allow enough time for consumption between harvests. This will work best with those who start their own transplants from seed and keep good notes. Start different sets of vegetables at different ages so that we can maximize the growing season and to allow the different ages to mature several weeks apart and not all at once. Remember to never throw away or allow extra produce to go bad. Friends, relatives and neighbors will be delighted to help you get rid of any excess vegetables!

MUMS GALORE!Local garden centers will be fully stocked on garden chrysanthemums during this time of year. The “Garden Mum” is probably the most well-known fall flowering plant among Louisiana gardeners. Some retail locations will overwhelm you with their selections. Take your time and look at all of the different colors and flower forms available to you. Garden mums come in an array of colors including red, bronze, purple, pink, orange, yellow and white. Many cultivars display more than one color. Remember to handle your garden mum transplants with care. The branches and stems can be extremely brittle. Some transplants may include a support structure attached to the pot to help prevent damage during shipping. Use care when removing these devices.

NATIONALADVERTISING MARKET

The Brrrr! Season BeginsBy Tony Onellion

For years, I have referred to the last four months of the year as the Brrrrr! months. Both because they become colder as we pass through them and the fact they all end in …ber.

Brrrr! Months are anticipated for several reasons. One, they come at the end of what is usually a long, hot, sticky summer. South Louisiana suffers from four to four and a half months of nasty, hard-to-breathe weather from mid-April until Labor Day…and beyond. September comes with trepidation and caution; killer hurricanes are still a real possibility and killer humidity stays around for most of the month, especially on LSU football weekends. But by September 30th, the only real threat of hurricanes is for small ones, where few residents would evacuate. After

all, no really mean storm has hit Louisiana after October 1st.

September, more importantly, is the start of the real football season where even Tulane fans are optimistic and Les Miles hasn’t had a chance to do anything really aggravating. The Saints are billed as a potential Super Bowl contender and the PUP list and lingering injury situation haven’t done much to dispel the high hopes. School is back in session and oysters are back on the menu. The white shrimp season is under way and new and returning television shows begin a fresh 13 weeks. Tailgating and fall cookouts are at their best in September, where the seasons overlap. Pools can still be used and gutters are not ready to clean with the leaves that come later in the autumn season.

October is the best month of the year. Fishing, football and food are at their zenith and the hurricane season is a distant memory. The air is crisper and humidity has gone, along with love bugs, wasps and mosquitos. Autumn leaves are beginning but not the annoyance they will become as Christmas approaches. Halloween is on the horizon, along with All Saints Day, and the Tigers and Saints are still on a high, despite their records and the inevitable upsets/defeats that have come their way. People are shopping, dining and traveling on short trips and everyone is settled into their post-summer routines. Just the right number of festivals fill October so as not to interfere with the more serious side of life: school, work and preparing for winter. October also has elections, which means the anticipation of change from what is usually viewed as the corruption of whatever current administration is in office. You can perform your household repairs, add-ons and conversions easier in October because rain is usually not a big issue and the cooler, dryer air makes outside work that much more palatable. Taxes are two months away and you can shop the big boxes without tripping over Christmas merchandise.

November brings more change. The biggest event early on is the Alabama-LSU football game. National elections take place and you can finally break out the sweaters and light jackets for anticipated “bundling up.” The holiday mood swings into higher gears with Thanksgiving. Chores are more so because leaves now must be raked and gutters cleaned. This is also the time of year to prepare outside fixtures for the colder weather, so pools become winterized, warm weather toys get put up and potentially serious problems such as leaky roofs are addressed. It’s also when “white Wednesdays” really hit their peak as hundreds of rolls of Charmin and Scott toilet paper adorn the trees of the homes where certain students reside. It’s the South’s answer to snow-covered trees since we rarely see the white, wet stuff here in Louisiana. November is when nostalgia ratchets up as people remember their days as children when the holiday season meant mostly fun, warm houses and lots of friends and relatives.

December is a mixed bag. Of course, Christmas and Hanukkah dominate the month but so does the sadness of lost families and less than pleasant holiday memories. Taxes are right around the corner, but so are college playoffs, bowl games and the professional playoffs.

And the casual fan begins to pay some attention to the NBA and even acknowledges the existence of the NHL from time to time. And this year, there’s even the possibility of an LSU basketball powerhouse (but not a Final Four contender, unfortunately). The promise of a New Year’s Eve party is always a positive. December is the king of anticipation months because most of the action comes at the end of the month. There’s even a possible snow flurry or icy day and those who hate daylight savings time have their first full month of regular time. Anticipation of a new year, the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras and king cakes keep the optimism shining in the hearts of most southeast Louisiana residents. And in our part of the South, that’s enough optimism to carry us into the first dim beginnings of spring, which starts at least 30 to 45 days earlier than in most of the nation. Our February is a mixed weather bag and folks from the north or midwest don’t understand our enthusiasm once Groundhog Day has come and gone. Throw me something, mistah! Throw me another year of living in this wonderful region in the greatest country on Earth.

Belle Chasse Academy had the honor of welcoming former NFL player Sean Harper for a presentation to kick-off the school’s Character Counts program. Shawn Harper is in tremendous demand as one of the most dynamic, life-changing motivational speakers in the country. He receives many invitations to speak each year. He has motivated and empowered tens of thousands of individuals producing seminars and personal coaching sessions. His life story is truly amazing – he has four documented learning disabilities, had the lowest GPA in his class, was unable to complete a sentence without stuttering, was an average football player but is now an NFL football pro, life success coach, MTV made coach, successful motivational speaker and CEO of his own company. Mr. Harper wowed the students and staff of Belle Chasse Academy with his stories. He demonstrated the “loads” we carry in life by putting a light person, an average person and a heavy person on his back to prove he could carry them all. Not only that, he also bent a frying pan and ripped a phone book in half!

The 2015 version of the LSU Tigers have perhaps the best true freshman class in school history. Two defensive players stood out in Starkville Saturday night as defensive end Arden Key and cornerback/safety Kevin Tolliver showed they had the right stuff to play not only right away but at an effective level during their first year. Key had a key (this play on words will be common this season) sack against All American quarterback Dak Prescott and showed the quickness of Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery from four years ago at his position. But Key is a physically superior player than either one of those former All American Tigers right now. He kind of reminds me of Javon Kearse, “The Freak” from Florida in the early 2000’s. 6’5” and 250 pounds and as quick a defensive lineman (and football smart) as there is in college football this year. Tolliver showed Darrell Revis-like coverage skills all night long and he’s the best thing to hit campus since Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu. With Tolliver, teamed with sophomore Jamal Adams and a highly skilled and deep group of defensive backs, the Tigers already might be the dominant secondary in the NCAA.

The first half belonged to Brandon Harris, however. The formerly scrawny Bossier Parish quarterback showed 20 more pounds and a ton more confidence as he effectively led the Tigers to a 14-0 lead. It would have been more but three big plays, two for touchdowns, were called back for holding. Newcomers Will Clapp and Josh Boutte held as they adjusted to their first full game as starting Tigers. On the whole, the offensive line looked dominant for the first two quarters and the last 15 minutes. Leonard Fournette and his stablemates at running back comprise one of the three best backfields in the SEC (along with Alabama and Georgia).

As a first game performance, on the road, following a warm up game cancellation, this performance on the field was an A-. The offense showed the biggest gains behind Harris, Fournette and Travis Dural and Malachi Dupre at receiver. And an LSU tight end actually caught the first pass of the year and one actually caught a ball over the middle. Film on both plays have been sent to the Smithsonian. The defense is as quick as 2011 but not as dominant on the line. That will come in time. Linebackers are quicker. No one got burned deep by Prescott but two series of short West Coast offensive passing attacks had the tired defense reeling. They were tired because the one thing that has not changed one iota is Coach Les Miles. Miles decided at halftime not to risk the perceived fragility of Harris’s quarterback persona and effectively told Dan Mullen’s Bulldogs “don’t worry about a pass. We won’t throw it. Stack the box all you want.” And the Bulldogs did. Several 3 and outs for the Tigers controlled the fourth quarter for the Starkville faithful and led to the Tigers being Dog tired as the offense spent less than two minutes on the field during any one drive in the final 15 minutes.

Giving carte blanche to a talent like Dak Prescott is like locking up a career criminal in the OPP… what’s going to stop either one from breaking out? Prescott broke out and the only two things that saved the Tigers at the end were Prescott’s brain freeze delay of game which pushed the ball back five yards as the Bulldogs attempted a 52-yard field goal and the fact that the kicker was not their regular long-distance guy. Oh, Miles tried his damnedest to give the ‘ Dogs a chance to win, pulling out his infamous game management skill set by calling a second time out too late after the kicker missed his first attempt. Miles had correctly called a time out to “ice” the kid before the first snap but waited just a little too long for time out number two and the kicker got his second chance. Fortunately, he missed. Chalk this one up in Miles’ archives from the Tennessee end of game blown call and his Ole Miss decision from 2013 as classic “do-de-do” Miles Moments. I don’t think this guy realizes what he does and shows little concern with the results.

Now the Tigers have a real head case team to face at home this weekend in the Auburn Tiger Eagle/Plainsmen. They look as confused as a team can be and only a fortuitous bad punt kept the Auburn fans from a highly embarrassing loss to Jacksonville State. Jacksonville is where football goes to die but the Auburn team was all but embalmed on the Plains last week. LSU should be the favorite here as long as head coaching decisions are not factored in. They have more raw talent and more weapons than the suddenly vulnerable Tigers from Alabama. Playing at home before 102,000 fans in the SEC’s version of Seattle’s noise box should produce a win and perhaps a convincing one for LSU. Just keep Miles grazing on his patch of grass and let coordinators Steele and Cameron do their (so far) amazingly effective jobs.
