Just after 7 a.m. this morning (May 16, 2016), the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified of a multiple vehicle crash on southbound LA 23 inside the Belle Chasse Tunnel.Deputies and first responders, which included Plaquemines Parish Fire Department and EMS personnel, arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Both lanes of traffic were completely closed due to several disable vehicles. Troopers from the Louisiana State Police assisted with directing traffic.

Deputies learned that 11 total vehicles were involved in the crash. The vehicles sustained minor to severe damage. Five were eventually towed from the scene.A 55-year-old man had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was transported to a local area hospital with minor injuries. The man has since been released. Two other individuals complained of minor injuries on scene, but stated they would seek medical attention on their own.Preliminary investigation has found that as a vehicle was about to exit the tunnel, it was rear-ended by a car that was following too close. A chain reaction of multiple crashes ensued. It was reported that there were wet pavement conditions inside the tunnel at the time of the crashes; however, those conditions do not appear to be the contributing factor. Both lanes of LA 23 were reopened at approximately 7:53 a.m.The incident remains under investigation by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Deputy Joey Rees at 504-564-2525.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Paul Mack, Local fisherman

Fished for 8 days straight so I will try to catch up today. Last weekend was not an offshore weekend but I had customers that were told but they still wanted to try. I offered them inshore but they insisted on trying. No chance for any tuna or mahi just close rig stuff if we could even do that safely. Saturday I had a family of 4, Father, 2 sons, and Grandpa. We loaded up my Glacier Bay catamaran and eased down the river. As soon as we hit the pass I knew the only thing I could do would be close by. Before I got to the closest rig the youngest son was already sea sick but they still wanted to try. The seas in this area were doable but not comfortable. I tied up to the rig on the calm side and on the first drop we hooked up to a nice snapper. No pictures on the boat because of the seas. Dad reeled up the first fish and he also caught the sea sick bug. Second fish the oldest son reeled up and we fed the sharks.

It was now a family affair with 3 generations throwing up at one time. Even Grandpa got into the act. Once we hit the protected waters of the river and they started feeling a little better I heard the youngest son tell his dad “Dad I really really love you more than anything but I will never ever do this again. The poor kid got a very bad experience for his first trip out.

We were back in way before noon with 3 nice snappers and 3 people glad to see land.As I was leaving the marina my friend Marty shows up with his new Calcutta.

I was going with him the next day. Our intention was to rig fish close and put in tracks on his electronics of some of the tight places at some of the passes. Sunday we headed out and it was almost a repeat of the day before. His buddies got some snapper but the trip was cut short for the same reason. (Excessive chum) We managed some snapper but his friends thought it would be better to sit at the house boat and relax so we headed in. After we dropped them off he and I went back out and filled the electronics with what we needed. He had all this on his old boat but could not for some reason transfer the information. At our last place we marked a course around a sandbar in east bay. His old tracks would not have been much good because this bar has built up since he first marked them. With the winds coming in from the south we were going through breakers in 4 to 6 feet of water. The cat took a pair of breakers over the bow but there was no real danger. It was defiantly not a place we wanted to stay in. Once we tracked around to the outside point I turned the boat and headed in. I will say I am very impressed with the Calcutta boats. This was my first of 4 days on 1 of 2 Calcutta boats that were down here. Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOMOur Freedom Charters504-247-8459

We got a few past the sharks but we were loosing a lot of setups to the sharks. Our time at the rig was short. Once we got 3 whole fish on board they pulled the plug on the trip.

Lawns: Starting from Scratch For those of us who live in the Deep South, you know that we take pride in caring for and maintaining a healthy lawn. We spend a lot of time outdoors participating in many activities such as family picnics, playing sports, and sometimes just relaxing to enjoy nature. Lawn and turfgrass make up a significant portion of our outdoor spaces and now is the time to start one or make any adjustments to an already existing lawn.

In Louisiana, we grow warm season grasses for our lawns. Some of the typical varieties include: bermudagrass, st augustinegrass, centipedegrass, and zoysiagrass. This is opposed to cool season grasses like fescue, ryegrass, and kentucky bluegrass that are grown above the Mason Dixon line. Warm season grasses thrive in warmer climates where they grow all throughout summer months. The first step in starting a new lawn is to take notes on how much sun or shade the area will receive. While grasses are full sun plants by nature, some of them can handle shade a little better than others. For full, all day sun locations look for bermudagrass and centipedegrass. For locations hat receive some shade your best bet would be to go with st agustinegrass or zoysiagrass. The next step is to take a soil sample and have it analyzed. Using this information we can make adjustments to the soil pH and several elements before the grass installed.

The installation of a lawn can be done by a couple of different means. Centipedegrass and bermudagrass can be seeded whereas all of them can be sodded. Start by using a burndown herbicide such as glyphosate to remove existing vegetation. This should be done 3-4 weeks prior. Next grade the area to help with drainage issues by filling in low spots, creating swales, and other techniques used to help water drain naturally. The seed or sod can now be applied. Pay close attention to irrigation needs.Sod should be irrigated acouple times a day so that the soil layer attached to the grass doesn’t dry out completely. Seeded areas should be irrigated as to provide enough water for seed germination. A good care program in the beginning is the best recipe for a long and successful lawn grass.

Moles and their controlWhile keeping up with the yard and other garden areas around the house, we run into our fair share of problems. Some are easy to deal with while others can be quite a pain. Dealing with moles is one of those issues that can drive a gardener wild. It’s almost as if there is no rhyme or reason as to where the tunnels will start and end. To get a better idea on the best way to management these pesky creatures, you need to understand their habits. You see moles, like any other animal, need to eat in order to survive. They also live underground and sometimes never see the light of day. Because of this, they have extremely poor to non-existent eye sight. If you look at pictures of a mole you’ll notice that this creature was made to dig with its long narrow, funnel like snout and specialized digging hands. These little guys will dig around the yard in search of food like beetle grubs and earth worms. It is during this activity where we will start seeing the tunnels associated with moles all throughout our landscaped areas.

To help manage mole populations, there are a few things available to us. Try and use more than one technique at a time for best results. The first step is to help eliminate their food source. You can find products that will help kill grubs in the soil. Most of them will include “grub killer” in the product name. Follow the individual labels for proper application instructions. A second method involves the use of traps. Traps can be very useful in controlling moles as long as they are placed in active tunnels. Step on several areas of a tunnel system and check back later for signs of rebuilding. When an active tunnel is found place the trap and set the trap according to the instructions. Check them often to dispose and reset as needed. The third method uses a toxicant to kill moles as they feed on it. The active ingredient bromethalin is highly effective and can be found in a product call Talpirid. The product resembles earth worms and can be placed along active tunnels for effective control. Please read the product label and be careful using this product around pets and small children.

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Offi ce (PPSO) would like to recognize Jalyn Dantzler for writing and illustrating a publication titled “All About Cops.” Jalyn, who is a 7-year-old 1st grader at Belle Chasse Primary School, recently took on the project as a class assignment. His proud mother recently shared the book with Commander Eric Becnel, who is an assistant coach for Jalyn’s parish recreation baseball team. The nine-page document incorporated topics Jalyn learned all year long. He dedicated the publication to “children who want to learn facts about cops and moms and dads and my family and friends.” We are pleased to share a couple of pages from his work. Jalyn, all of us at the PPSO are proud of you! We encourage you and stand behind you to keep up your dreams of one day being a police offi cer.

Well, it’s that time of year again. The weather is a lot warmer, graduations are happening, fi nal exams are being taken and students are catching the summertime bug. They also want to say “Thank You” to those special people at school that they will no longer have as their role model and teacher next school year. And my grandchildren are included in that group. I must admit I was quite surprised when my grandson asked me to paint something for one of his teachers. Surprised, because he is presently a Junior and he VERY RARELY asks me to make anything for anyone! (And we all know teenage boys don’t like showing their gratitude when they have actually learned a lot from a teacher.) I gladly agreed and quickly asked what he had in mind. He wanted something simple, something that would be useful and could be used daily. He wanted me to paint a clipboard with the school’s emblem and motto. That was right up my alley! I love to paint things as gifts, it is always unexpected. And, I hope, comes as a surprise to the recipient. Yep, my grandson is a Shaw Eagle! And we are very proud of him! I had so much fun painting that gift, knowing this teacher must have really inspired in. Thank You Mrs. Gomez for guidance and teaching him for the past two years!

My granddaughter also asked me to paint something for her to give to a special person at her school, because this is her last year there. This person has been a big part of our lives. She was at O.L.P.H. when our grandson started kindergarten there. Our granddaughter really looks up to her. She defi antly has a special place in our hearts and will be greatly missed by everyone at school and in the community. It will be awfully hard for someone to fi ll her shoes. She is such a special person and I wanted to paint something that would remind her of all the wonderful years she was here. My granddaughter and I went digging through my painting books and found what we thought would be the perfect thing to paint on a clipboard! A very happy Hornet! Something that will surely bring a smile to her face whenever she has the opportunity to use it. She gave so much joy and love to the students. She will be greatly missed. We are wishing Sister E lots of happiness and success wherever her new adventure takes her.Thank you Sister E from the bottom of my

heart for all your love and devotion!

These ladies and countless other teachers have touched the lives of our children and grandchildren. And their infl uence will always be a part of their lives. I thank God for the wonderful teachers and principles that my grandchildren have had over the years. May God Bless them and bring them good health, joy, and much success.

Well, that’s my craft projects for this time. Did you make something special for a teacher or principle? Email me and tell me about it. I will gladly share your craft project with everyone. Soooo, What will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson.
