A Wood Stork and Wading Bird Event will be held on Saturday, July 19, within the South Farm area of the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The South Farm area is located in Iberville Parish and accessible via I-10.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are hosting this seasonal event from 7 a.m. to noon. Wood storks and other wading and shore birds are readily visible at this time of the year in the South Farm Area. Additional to seed bearing herbaceous plants, the developed habitat contains an abundance of small fish and crawfish, ideal food sources for wading birds.

The South Farm impoundments are drawn down in mid-summer to enhance the growth of wetland plants for wintering waterfowl. The drawdown period is extended almost a month at times due to the size of the impoundments and the management strategy which is focused on providing mud flats and very shallow water with concentrated prey for shorebirds (sandpipers) and wading birds (egrets, herons, spoonbills, storks and ibis).

The wood stork is the only stork native to North America. These large wading birds, which can grow to 4 feet tall with a 66-inch wingspan, are an indicator of the condition of our nation’s wetlands. As wetlands disappeared, wood stork numbers also diminished. Although many of these birds are from Mexico, the water management units at the South Farm are becoming more critical habitat for the species survival.

With only a few thousand of these birds left in the wild, this event provides an excellent opportunity for bird watchers, photographers and anyone who enjoys wildlife. The South Farm habitat also attracts alligators, white-tailed deer and many other species of birds. Individuals and professionals will be on hand to discuss the management of the area and provide wildlife identification assistance. Participants are advised to arrive early for improved wood stork viewing opportunities.

Driving directions to the South Farm: Take I-10 to the Ramah exit (Exit 135); drive north to the first road on the left, then turn left by L&L Grocery on Mimms Street; take first right cross the bridge and turn right on the lower Atchafalaya Levee Road, a gravel road. Drive approximately one mile or until you see the “South Farm” sign, cross over the levee and enter the parking lot. Event coordinators will be there to provide additional information.

There are no fees associated with this program but participants are reminded that anyone between the ages of 16 and 60 is required to have either a valid Louisiana hunting or fishing License, or a Wild Louisiana Stamp to visit a state WMA. These can be purchased at any license vendor selling LDWF hunting or fishing licenses, on-line at http://www.wlf.la.gov or by phone at 1-888-765-2602. For more information about the South Farm birding event, call the LDWF’s Wildlife Division Opelousas Field Office at 337-948-0255.

So, how was your holiday? Hope you had a lot of fun with family and friends. And I hope you didn’t get too much sun! Ouch!! Those sun burns can be very painful. We had a quite holiday. Our daughter and her family decided to head DTR and spend a couple quiet days in Empire. Can’t say I blame her, she really needed the break. As for my husband and I we enjoyed each other’s company. Instead of the usual bar b que we decided to go out and eat and later visited with friends we had not seen in awhile. It was a very enjoyable day and evening.

Well, as you can tell from my picture I didn’t get to finish the piece I started for my door. I am determined to finish this though. I feel like this is something I can hang on my door any time. I really like this. When I had time to paint on this it was really fun with all the bright colors. Still have more leafs to paint and blueberries to add,

along with a whole lot of shading and highlighting. This is a Jeannie Bobish original design. I just love all her happy carefree designs. When I first saw this I naturally thought of the Fourth of July but, since I didn’t get a chance to complete it for this year’s celebration, I will have it way ahead of time for next year.

Even though I did not complete my project, my granddaughter Carlea’ did complete hers, and a couple of more besides. She decided to paint a family name picture for her Mom to hang on their living room wall. The canvas that was used is 8 X 10 and the colors are basic primary colors. The brighter the better and everyday black to do the writing. She has been doing a lot of canvas painting lately. This is something that any child can do, just make sure they have an apron on. Sometimes the paint just magically appears on everything around the painting also. She used a 3/4” Wash Brush for her stripes and a # 6 round brush for her letters. I think she did a very good

job at free hand painting. She has done other free hand work but choose this one to show everyone. I think she turn into a very crafty young lady. I am so proud of her willingness to learn things. Her mind is like a sponge that just wants to absorb everything! I am sure once you introduce your little one to the crafty side of life you won’t be able to hold their creativity back, it will just flow over.

Well, that’s it for this time. I am going work on my UFO (unfinished object).

What will your next craft project be? Mine.…? Not really sure. But I know it will be fun!

Deputies Investigating Plaquemines Parish’s Second Possible Accidental Drowning in the Past

Three DaysOn Saturday, July 5, 2014, at approximately 1:15 a.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a man who had been found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a residence in the 200 block of Burmaster Street in Belle Chasse. The reporting person advised that CPR had been initiated.

Upon the arrival of 1st District Patrol deputies, it was discovered that Shawn Meladine, 21, a resident at the home, was found in the pool by partygoers. Approximately 15-20 friends had gathered at the location earlier in the day for a party celebrating the 4th of July holiday.

Investigators learned that after midnight, a couple of patrons went for a swim and did not observe anyone else in the pool when they exited. Sometime later, a friend noticed Meladine’s lifeless body on the surface of the water. Meladine was pulled from the pool and CPR was started.

Plaquemines Parish EMS arrived on the scene approximately 8 minutes later and continued to administer CPR. Meladine was transported to a Westbank Hospital where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. No signs of trauma were noted to Meladine’s body.

This morning, an autopsy was performed by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office to determine the official cause and manner of death. The results of the autopsy are pending toxicology tests.

Meladine’s death appears to be Plaquemines Parish’s second tragic accidental drowning death in the past three days.

Shawn Meladine

On July 3, the body of Edward Cortez, 57, also of Belle Chasse, was recovered from the Hero Canal by the Sheriff’s Office Marine Division. Cortez went missing on the evening of July 2 after a day of boating. Results of Cortez’s autopsy, which was conducted this morning, are also pending toxicology testing.

Edward Cortez

On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) received a call of a missing person in the area of the Walker Road Boat Launch near the Hero Canal in Belle Chasse.

Sheriff’s Office Marine Division personnel arrived on the scene and located witnesses who related that the missing person, identified as Edward J. Cortez, 57-years-old, of the 100 block of Walker Road in Belle Chasse, had dropped off a friend at the launch after a day of boating. The friend was going to relocate a truck and boat trailer from the launch to Cortez’s residence. Cortez was supposed to meet the friend at his residence where the boat was going to be tied up. When Cortez did not show, the witnesses got concerned and began to look for him. A short time later, Cortez’s unoccupied boat was located approximately 1,000 feet east of the launch. The witnesses were unable to locate Cortez and feared for the worst. The Sheriff’s Office was then contacted to help look for him.

Marine Division personnel conducted a search and rescue operation until temporarily suspending the efforts at 1:20 a.m. On Thursday, July 3, at 6:00 a.m., the Marine Division resumed the search, along with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, and the Help! Search and Rescue Dog Team from Slidell. At approximately 2:20 p.m., Cortez’s lifeless body was recovered near the canal’s north-side bank, close to where his boat was found. PPSO detectives and the Coroner’s Office arrived on scene. No trauma to the body was noted. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Saturday, July 5 to determine the cause and manner of death.

PPSO Assisting Louisiana State Police with Early Morning Fatal Car Crash Near Empire

July 8th, 2014, at approximately 3:28 a.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified of a three-car crash in the 30500 block of Highway 23 in Nairn. The Second District Patrol Division arrived on the scene approximately 2 minutes later and located a driver who was critically injured. The victim subsequently died as a result of his injuries. The driver who is believed to have been responsible for the crash fled from the scene on foot. He was captured nearly 5 hours later by deputies in a wooded area in the 100 block of South Street in Port Sulphur after he ran from them. He is currently in custody. No other details are available at this time. The investigation is being conducted by Louisiana State Police Troop B.

GENERALLY SPEAKING - Summer patterns are established along the lower Louisiana coast. People are complaining about the hot weather, but some mornings have been downright pleasant, with even a cool breeze. We’re not listening to those weather whiners anyway, so load up the ice chest with plenty of ice and non-alcoholic beverages and make sure you have your new fishing license (the fine for an expired one is well over $100 - that’s what I paid nearly 15 years ago when I got caught in July with an expired license. It’s your money). Speaking of ice chests, if you want to go first class, check out the Yetti brand of super insulated chests. They are not cheap but some people say they’ll keep your ice intact the entire week and they are built like a Mack truck. Trout fishing is still not what it usually is around this time but that probably means a longer fall season and some bigger specks when we get into September and October. Shrimp are abundant and reds are still the leading species for easy and plentiful harvesting in Plaquemines. Lots of bull reds still make up a large portion of the catch and many times dominate the morning’s fun. Watch the weather and respect the water. And know your limitations. Good luck fishing and have a productive July by having a protective July (from the sun and the elements).

MGM MARINA - Leona Squarsich. 504-656-2267. There are plenty of trout in the area, beginning at St. Mary’s Point out towards Grand Island, Four Bayou Pass and local waters close by. If you’re looking for the reds, try Bay 5, Lake Laurier, Round Lake and even some off the dock as they were hitting during last week’s holiday weekend. Don’t forget the dock, where carefree fishing at an affordable price is always available, especially with a boatload of antsy kids. Mom will love it too. MGM Marina 504-656-2267.

BOBBY DUGAS - BC CHARTERS LTD. Bobby Dugas had a three day outing with a couple of guys from Hammond. Monday was a day for them - they caught their limit of six red snappers in an hour and then moved to Double Bayou and brought in their limit of 15 reds in 35 minutes. The river is cleaning up well and the falling tides in the morning are a good sign. If the river stays down, fishing will be awesome. The water is turning a nice shade of green which means all the good flow from up north finally is moving into our area One of Bobby’s guests was Boyd Bulot, who holds the world record for consuming raw oysters - he downed 56 dozen in 27 minutes and that’s like one oyster every 2 and a half seconds. This man will never need Viagra! BOBBY DUGAS. BC CHARTERS LTD. 504-912-9724.

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH -Robert says the fishing has slowed with some catches out by Iron Banks using shrimp, as well as Triple Pass and American Bay. If you fish Drum Island, use crank baits and you can pick up a half dozen reds and specks. Also try the old Wildlife and Fisheries camp and Bay Jardene. Look for the birds and you’ll find the specks underneath. Many are undersized, however. The water is cleaning up with a dropping river. Cox Bay showed a few trout. If you fish Beshel’s, check with Robert for the best spots that week. If you go there, send us some pictures and a story or two about your success on the east bank. Beshel’s is still the place to catch your limits on the east bank and they have all your launch needs seven days a week. BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. Captain Dan’s been getting into some good sized trout lately. He brought in 40 the other day weighing nearly three pounds each! That’s a career day for anyone. Meanwhile, Dan chartered a trip with Karen Stephens and her husband, Brent. Karen caught her first snapper on that outing. A Houston couple - Greg and Mary - had a nice afternoon’s catch of reds with Dan and Brian Saliba was the proud fisherman bringing in a keeper Mangrove snapper. Emilyn Guey caught her first yellowfin tuna fishing out of Venice Marina as the tuna harvests have been good as of late. Plenty of mangrove and red snappers are showing up at the dock as all the offshore captains are having plenty of good days. Let’s hope the weather holds and afternoon thundershowers are brief and well scattered. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

CAPTAIN JAY QUIROS - OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. Life’s a beach these days because the specks are plentiful along those beaches near the mouth of the river and in the passes. If the ladyfish move in, however, pull up and get out because they will ruin the catch and mess up your lines. If you fish the mouth and the passes, bull reds are hitting mullet. Just put a grub on under a popping cork and cast into the baitfish. Wonderful fun! If you use dead bait on the beaches, the bull sharks and black tips will go after it. Also the Jack Crevelle are along those sandy areas. It’s been good all week with high water. Look for the pretty green water for your best results. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

Red snapper caught with BOBBY DUGAS - BC CHARTERS LTD. Boyd Bulot, who holds the world record for

consuming raw oysters, client of BOBBY DUGAS.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. FISHING THE MIDDLE WITH LLOYD. Fishing down in southern Plaquemines has definitely been a little slower this year than in years of the past. On the west side of the river, from Buras to Four Bayous, flocks of seagulls can be found diving on wads of shrimp with schools of hungry trout under each pile. Catfish and small undersized trout will consume a lot of your time, but persistence will pay and you will end the day with a nice mess of trout. For the reds, concentrate on the area of broken marsh between Bay Adams and Bastion Bay, throwing spinner baits or Gulp! under a cork and you will find plenty of reds. Fish all points and islands that have bait around them and your chances of catching fish will increase. On the east side of the river, California Bay to American Bay has plenty of piles of birds with eager trout under them. Tons of reds are being caught along the shorelines with Gulp! under a cork or market shrimp. Trout have also showed up at Breton Island and are being caught with live shrimp. Beware of thunderstorms while out at the islands. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

CAPTAIN LARRY HOOPER-OUR FREEDOM STORY #1

Yesterday we had 5 boats running a donated trip for a bunch of guys from all over the country that served in the same unit in Viet Nam and have remained in touch since. They come here every year and this year I was proud to be a part of the outing. The trip was to just go out and find a few fish for the cookout that night. We gathered for breakfast and got to the water little after 8:00 am. Normally we are on the water for 2 hours already but today would be a different day for a special group of guys.

Captain Donny Ray served with them and has been instrumental in keeping this going. His boat was the lead boat for this day.

Once we started fishing the fish were not cooperating. 3 of the boats were in the same area and we were all struggling to loose bait. My first fish was a very nice flounder. Which was the only one caught of all 5 boats.

My boat also managed a few reds but it was not on fire. We were headed in around 12:30 with more than enough for tonight’s meal. The guys gathered around the cocktail BS area and we cleaned the fish. I went home, cleaned my boat, got it ready for the next day, put it in the shed, and went down to join them for the evening meal.

We had a great day and I am already looking forward to next years fishing trip.

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than

that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

My inshore trip was canceled for unknown reasons so I decked for Mike Jeffcoat. We got an early start because they had to be back rather early. We were loaded up and almost at the end of tiger pass as the sun greeted us. Unknown to me this was an indication of the type of day we were about to have.

The winds had been blowing for the last 2 days. The forecast was for the seas to lay down throughout the day. The seas were very heavy. We had to make about a 20 mile loop in order to have almost bearable seas. We did not even bother to look for live bait. We were the first ones at our destination. There was nothing on the surface to give any indication the fish were there but our screen lit up about 100-200 feet down. We got dirty right away. On our first drift the kid hooks up with his first ever tuna.

He is so skinny I had trouble getting a belt to fit him. I helped him by steadying the rod and guiding the line on when we were able get any at all. He stayed on it for a very long time but the fish was too much for him to finish off. He stayed on it until he got noticeably weak. His dad jumped in and helped as a good father should. The team work paid off and we had our first blood on the first drift.

(Con’t next column)

Our next fish was a bonito and that provided our red meat bait. That got us another yellowfin that broke the line before we got it to the boat. We were able to land our next fish that was a big fat one that was a 80-90 pound fish.

The girl in front hooks up and lands a rainbow runner. Although an edible fish I cut it up for bait.

I had talked to Captain Eddie Burger about the fish on this particular rig and he said that “Those fish are mean”. We were soon to find out how mean the fish actually were. Our next drift gets us a hookup on our lightest setup. The girl gets on it and fights it for about 20 minutes but has to pass the rod.

This produced a quick tuna bite that threw the hook after about a 20 minute fight. We never saw it. We are now 2 out of 4 on the yellowfin hook to catch scale. Our next drift is the high spot of the day. The fish heads for the surface and we are given one heck of an aerial display by a rare white marlin. This fish went skyward about 7 or 8 times. The unfortunate thing is that everybody was so excited that nobody got any pictures of it. While we were fighting this fish we had a blue marlin very close to the boat. All I saw of it was the dorsal fin about 40 feet from the boat in the suns glare but it was a good sized blue. We took the white on for a picture.

I revived it and released it to fight again.

This fish stays on top which is an indication of a big tuna. It is giving the tuna head shake so we know it is not a shark. As the fight progresses every customer on the boat has a piece of this one. We only have 60 pound leader and did not want to put too much heat on it. It took us just over an hour in rough seas to get this 100 pound class tuna with an attitude in the boat.

It is now 12:30 and everybody on the boat is beat from the fight. We go back to make another drift and the grass has moved in. The water has changed and the bite is over. The trip was to be a short trip because the girl had to be back on college in Texas in the morning so we headed in. It was a good day worth all the pounding we took on the way out there. 3 for 5 on yellows, a white marlin, other action, and back to the dock by 2:00. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

USE POWER LAWN MOWERS SAFELYAbout 75,000 people are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year for injuries caused by power lawn mowers. Many of these injuries were caused by carelessness. One very important step to safety is to read the operator’s manual that comes with the mower. Power mowers are designed to cut dense grass when used properly and will mulch grass and chop up small sticks and weed stems. Power mowers also will easily cut fingers, toes and shoes, however. Tens of thousands of people every year wind up in the emergency room because they were careless and forgot.

They reach into the discharge chute or pull the mower back over their toes. The mower should be seriously respected using good common sense. The tip of a mower blade often achieves a speed of 200 miles per hour. This fast speed helps it cut better. If a small pebble or rock is hit by the blade, it also will travel at 200 miles per hour. This is enough speed and force to injure a person, to break windows or to put out an eye. Keep others well away from a mower when you are mowing.

Pick up trash on the lawn before mowing and watch for toys, sticks, tree roots, fire ant mounds and so forth while mowing. Avoid mowing over dangerous objects. Move them to a safe place. Treat fire ant mounds when you encounter them and at the next mowing they will be gone. This is an effective way to control fire ants.

These safety tips are recommended:

•Stop the engine of mowers when not in use. •Fill with fuel when the engine is cool, and wipe up spills. •Check the oil level frequently, and make sure it is full. •Be certain the mower blade is firmly attached to the mower shaft. •A sharp blade is a must for clean cutting. • Mow dry lawns, not wet grass. •Wear sturdy shoes, such as steel toe work shoes. •Wear long pants and other protective clothing. Finally, do not scalp your lawn, but leave it about two inches deep for a beautiful lawn.

IRISES SHOULD BE DIVIDED AND TRANSPLANTED NOWWhy is it that only some irises flower?

The answer to this frequent question of iris growers, it overcrowding. Unless irises are divided every two to four year flowering will cease. In Louisiana it is recommended to divide and transplant irises in mid-summer. Some authorities find that early division and transplanting gives the best results in growth and flowering the next year.

It is recommended to make small divisions if you don’t wish to divide again for at least three or five years. Make large divisions if you desire an abundance of flowers the first year after planting. Large divisions will require separation in two to three years.

Use a sharp knife in cutting rhizomes. Each division must have at least one growing point (fan of leaves), a few inches of healthy rhizomes and several well developed roots. When separated from the original clump, each division is ready to plant. For planting irises it is recommend that you prepare a bed by spading to a depth of four to five inches. The hole or trench should be large enough for the rhizome with its roots spread naturally. Fill the hole with garden loam soil and press the soil firmly around the rhizome. Water immediately, soaking the soil around the roots. For more color in the landscape it is recommended that you use at least a dozen or more rhizomes of the same variety in one area with each rhizome about 15 to 18 inches apart.

SUMMER WATERING MORE CRUCIAL IN SEASON Watering is one of the most misunderstood and confusing gardening chores. Even dedicated gardeners do not realize the inadequacy of their watering methods until it is too late and a plant is badly damaged or dead. Because water is both essential for healthy plant growth and costly to apply in quantity during the summer, it is important to get it to the plant’s roots and keep it there.

There are watering techniques that will help keep plants healthy, and make it easier to maintain specimens throughout the landscape while avoiding costly water bills. The techniques apply to all growing things in the garden, from shade and fruit trees to vegetables, lawns and houseplants.

•Never water strictly by the calendar. Learn to recognize dry plants and soil, and use these as your guide for watering.

•When the plants are dry, water thoroughly. Water lawns so that the soil will be wet several inches down. This encourages deep rooting and drought tolerance.

•Light daily sprinklings lead to shallow root development and the need for more frequent waterings as water is lost from the upper part of the soil. Water trees and shrubs by taking the sprinkler off the end of the hose and letting water run slowly for an hour or so, guarding against water run-off.

•Avoid letting plants become waterlogged because of poor drainage or over-watering. Symptoms for plants which have been kept too wet are about the same as for those kept too dry. Roots in waterlogged soils die and do not take up water, so plants wilt and turn yellow.

•To help keep moisture in the soil, use a mulch such as bark, bagasse or pine straw. In addition to reducing evaporation, mulches also keep the soil cooler and make weed pulling much easier.

Make a special effort to keep newly planted trees and shrubs well watered. Their developing root systems are sensitive to under and over watering. Water for plants is essential. Successful gardeners learn to recognize certain danger signs and avoid putting plants through such stress by applying water in a timely and adequate way.

Paws has more new furry best friends ready for adoption!

Please stop by PAWS to become Pet guardian today!

BEFORE YOU ADOPTAccording to the ASPCA, approximately 5 to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 to 4 million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those animals relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates.

PAWS, a no-kill shelter in Belle Chasse, LA, is committed to assuring that each animal adopted finds a loving, life-long home. Before you choose to welcome a pet into your home, make sure you say yes to these…

Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society

9 Questions Before You Adopt:1. Are you willing to make a lifetime (12-18 year) commitment to caring and loving this

animal?

2. Are you financially prepared for expenses involved in pet ownership (emergencies, food, litter, shots, vet visits, shelter, grooming)? According to RaisingSpot.com, the yearly cost can start at $360 and rise to $2,520 or more.

3. Does everyone in your household want and agree to adopt this pet?

4. Puppies require a lot of time and special attention which can sometimes continue for more than two years. If you are adopting a puppy, are you committed to the time, training and consistency required to raise a healthy dog?

5. Have you confirmed that nobody in your household is allergic to the kind of pet you are considering adopting?

6. Is there any kind of circumstance that would cause you to give up your pet, return it to the shelter or abandon the pet to fend for itself?

7. Are you preparing for a major life-changing event such as a move, marriage or new baby that would make the addition of a pet in the household too overwhelming?

8. Is your home ready to accept a pet? For example: do you have a fenced yard? If you rent, do you have approval for a pet? Have you kitten or puppy-proofed your home so that all of your furniture, shoes, wall, etc. are ready for kitties and puppies that are teething?

9. To assure your new pet is a good fit for your family and other pets already in the household, have you considered PAWS foster to adopt option?

Top 10 reasons pets are relinquished to shelters in the United States as sited by the National Council on Pet Population Study & Policy.

NEW OWNERSHIP

My family watched the PBS 4th of July celebration on Friday from our nation’s Capitol. WYES showed the 90-minute event back-to-back that evening. It was one of the finest events covered live in my lifetime. The responsible parties focused on the crowd and the weather, the setting and the closeups of every day Americans of every ilk and variation.

The performers ranged from Broadway stars to cutting edge young singers and a number of patriotic musical bands, chorales, orchestras and individuals. The tempo was lively and imaginative and did not dwell on anything but what the day was all about:the celebration of the birth of the greatest nation on Earth.

HAPPY 238TH BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! POLITICIANS CAN’T TAKE THE THRILL AWAY.

By Tony Onellion

Perhaps you tuned in also. You saw a very positive picture of this country in a setting where dispute and disappointment have been the norm for more than one presidency. For one day, the grandeur of this beautiful city was on display with its most important asset - its people of its nation, stacked along the Tidal Basin, the steps of all of the presidential monuments, the Reflecting Pool and on vessels along the Potomac River. If you’ve never been there, it is definitely a bucket list item for every American citizen. Go in the spring or fall for the best presentation and extremely pleasant weather.

Performances included those from Patti LaBelle, who literally glided across the stage and showed she still can belt out any songalong the Beltway or anywhere, recent American Idol winner Philip Phillips whose anthem last year was one of the finest patriotic pieces done in the past 20 years and Frankie Valli, who, at age 80, still sounds like he’s in his late 20’s when he and his group almost singlehandedly blunted the British Invasion of 1962-1965 with a half-dozen of the greatest rock songs ever written. Anyone who doesn’t have a back seat memory of the four Jersey Boys is to feel sorry for. The Four Seasons took the early days of U.S. rock and roll and bridged the eras between early Buddy Holley/Little Richard/Ricky Nelson/Chuck Berry/Elvis Presley/Bobby Rydell/Eddie Cochran/Fats Domino/The Shirelles/The Coasters and the beginnings of the Underground music of the late ‘60s and the cutting edge artistry of Bob Dylan/Jimmi Hendrix/The Doors/The Jefferson Airplane/Janis Joplin/Moby Grape/Richie Havens and Santana. The British Invasion, led by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, changed rock and roll forever, but the Four Seasons made sure it never replaced the original. And the music our parents said was jungle-like and would never appeal to anyone over 21 - well, just look at the elderly rocker stars still working today - Valli, Dylan, The Stones, Fats, Slidell’s own John Perkins, co-founder of the Crewcuts, Paul McCartney, Santana…just to name a few of the biggest and brightest.

Slidell’s fireworks presentation at Heritage Park is one of the finest in the New Orleans area and takes place in a beautiful setting along Bayou Bonfouca. But for once my family stayed home to watch the Washington performance. We had gone to Washington in 1976 and in 1986 and attended the 4th of July celebration on the Mall. This year’s performance dwarfed those two years. The fireworks were spectacular, the weather was outstanding and the mood was wonderful. No Congress. No Obama. No CNN. No Fox News. Just tens and tens of thousands of average Americans who like a great birthday party, love the recipient and don’t need any arrogant pontiffs or talking heads to tell them what to say, feel or think. America took the Political out of Correct on Friday and it was perfect.
