Body of Baton Rouge Man Found in Amite River Diversion CanalSearch and rescue teams found the body of a Baton Rouge man in the Amite River Diversion Canal about 2:45 a.m. on May 26 in Ascension Parish. Matthew Green, 28, was found about 2:45 a.m. by search and rescue teams from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Gonzales Fire Department and the St. Amant Fire Department.

According to the survivor, Green was on a jet ski and the survivor was in a boat on the Amite River Diversion Canal when they decided to switch positions with each other about 7 p.m. on May 25. When Green tried to board the vessel he apparently bumped the throttle and when the unmanned boat went into motion he lost his balance and was sent overboard into the water where the vessel then struck Green. Search and rescue crews were notified immediately and searched until they found Green.

Green’s body was turned over to the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office to determine a cause of death. LDWF will be the lead investigative agency for this fatal boating incident.

Boating Incident in Avoyelles Parish Leads to Fatality and DWI

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents are investigating a single vessel incident that claimed the life of a Mansura man on May 25 in Avoyelles Parish.

About 6:30 p.m., LDWF agents were notified of a boating incident and a missing boater on the Little River near Marksville. Agents were able to locate the body of David Crocket, 48, around 8 p.m. and turned him over to the Avoyelles Parish Coroner’s Office.

According to witnesses and the operator of the boat, Marcus Logan Sr., 42, of Mansura, they were traveling west on Little River and swerved to avoid an object in the water when Crocket fell overboard. Crocket went under the water and never surfaced.

Crocket was not wearing a personal flotation device when he entered the water.

After further investigation, agents determined that Logan Sr. was under the influence of alcohol while operating the vessel and arrested him for driving a vessel while intoxicated (DWI). Agents also cited Logan Sr. for careless operation of a vessel. Future charges may be pending.

DWI brings a $300 to $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail and up to a year suspension of driver’s license and boating operation privileges. Careless operation of a vessel carries up to a $300 fine and 30 days in jail.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced that the reward has been increased to $20,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for shooting the two whooping cranes found in Jefferson Davis Parish on Feb. 7.

Anyone with information on this incident can contact LDWF’s Enforcement Division by calling 1-800-442-2511 or using the tip411 program. To use the tip411 program, citizens can text LADWF and their tip to 847411 or download the “LADWF Tips” iPhone and Android app from the Apple App Store or Google Play free of charge. CitizenObserver, the tip411 provider, uses technology that removes all identifying information before LDWF receives the text so that LDWF cannot identify the sender.

Organizations contributing to the reward fund include the Humane Society of the U.S., Dr. Ben Burton, the Louisiana Operation Game Thief Program, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation, Sara Simmonds, the Animal Welfare Institute, Operation Migration, Lake Charles Area Sportsmen, the International Crane Foundation, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Audubon Nature Institute, Zoo New England, King White, Lowry Park Zoo, Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park, San Antonio Zoo, Joe Brooks and anonymous donors.

The whooping cranes were found near the corner of Compton Road and Radio Tower Road just north of Roanoke, about five miles north of Interstate 10. One bird was already dead when found and the second crane was transported to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, operated on and subsequently had to be euthanized when it failed to respond to recovery efforts.

LDWF has been working to restore a wild whooping crane population in Louisiana. Fifty juvenile cranes, brought to Louisiana in four separate cohort groups, have been released at LDWF’s White Lake property near Gueydan since 2011. Prior to this incident, 33 of those birds were alive and well on the landscape in central and southwest Louisiana. Some have been lost to predators, some to naturally occurring health problems, and five in total have been confirmed as killed or wounded by firearms.

Hope you are all enjoying this nice warm weather we have been having. Just not looking forward to the higher electric bill. We could really do without those!

Well, let me tell you about the project that my DTR ladies did last week. I am so proud of these ladies! They have never done any tole or decorative painting before. The project pictured in this column is only the second time they have painted. I really think they did a great job! We painted a 9” clothespin memo holder. This is a really cute design by Susan Kelley and it was completed in only 3 hours from start to finish. The clothespins can be used to hold a recipe card, a note to a family member, or just sitting on the counter for a little extra accent to your kitchen.

First the ladies sealed and base coated the clothespin with Dried Basil Green. After applying two coats that thoroughly dried between each coat, we traced on the main pattern. The hat, uniform, and towel were painted with Bleached sand, The face and hand are painted mocha and his scarf is true red. We had to use at least four coats of red as it is a transparent color. After all this dried to the touch the details were added. The lettering on the hat is black, also his hair, brows, eyes, mustache, mouth, and buttons. The hat, uniform, and towel are shaded with Dark Chocolate. His face, nose, and hand are shaded with Burnt Sienna. The scarf is shaded with a wash of black and highlighted with bleached sand. This design was a fun piece to paint and takes hardly no time at all. I love Susan Kelley’s designs. She has so many great projects.

I think my ladies did a really great job and I can hardly wait for our next project.

Okay, that’s our craft project for now. So what is your next project going to be? Mine.…Not really sure, but I know it will be fun. And hopefully will include this group of friends.

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Let me introduce you to these wonderful ladies, they are from left to right, Sandy, Jennifer, Whitney, Pam, and Monique. See you soon ladies! Can hardly wait til our next get together!

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS 5.29.14GENERALLY SPEAKING - Hey! The cold weather is finally gone for good and the water should be clearing and really pretty as no rain or serious upriver flow has hampered things recently. With the opening of the brown shrimp season and the inward migration of trout, fishing action should be reaching April and May levels between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. If you haven’t booked a trip this year, do so now, because the spring fishing patterns are in place with only about 60% of the normal heat and humidity. We’re really enjoying our trip reports from Larry Hooper, who loves to write and take great pictures almost as much as he loves to fish. “Hoops’” narratives are fun and tie in well with reports from Lloyd Landry, Dan Skermetta, Leona Squarisch, Jay Quiros, Robert Whittington and Bobby Dugas. Fish on, dudes!!!

MGM MARINA - Leona Squarsich. 504-656-2267. Fishing has been very successful during the last two weeks. Four Bayou Pass is giving up trout and reds and Bay Round has some trout hauls around 19 inches. One camper had caught reds one day, trout the next and drum the next day. Live bait is the key and live bait is at MGM - the marina of the stars! MGM Marina 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. FISHING THE MIDDLE WITH LLOYD. May is turning out to be one heck of a great fishing month. Large numbers of hungry trout are being found up and down both sides of the mighty Mississippi. On the west, trout have shown up on all the beaches from Empire to Four Bayous. Many piles of birds working shrimp can also be found all over the inside bays from Bay Adams to Lake Washington. Live shrimp or your favorite soft plastic rigged under a cork has been working great. On the east side, you can find tons of trout from American Bay on out to Breton Island and every rig in between. Reds are stacked along the shorelines eating everything in sight. Gulp! and market shrimp under a cork will surely fill your box. Don’t forget to make sure your boat and trailer are in good working condition before hitting the road. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

CAPTAIN JAY QUIROS - OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. Got live shrimp? That’s your ticket for catching all the specks and reds you want these days, according to Jay Quiros. There are more trout than reds in the Venice area and you can catch them under a popping cork with a beetle. Using market bait, you’ll bring in sheepshead, channel cats and channel mullets, drum and sharks. The summer pattern is starting to settle in, forcing out the spring patterns that have barely taken hold this year. The water is getting prettier. Check out these three gentlemen from the St. Louis area who chose Jay to take them out fishing before their annual trip to chase tuna. They are 86 and 78 years old and the youngster with them is only 57. I can relate to being called a youngster at 57 as that age and I have left each other long ago. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

BOBBY DUGAS - BC CHARTERS LTD. BOBBY DUGAS. If Bobby’s social media skills were equal to his fishing skills, he’d be one awesome coonass! But he took a quantum leap forward this issue and these pictures are the result. Bobby has been doing fine, like almost everyone else the past two weeks, as Mother Nature became less of a mot huh and more nurturing. We’ll let his pictures tell his story this week as BC Charters finally masters the smart phone! Nice work, Bobby! BC CHARTERS LTD. 504-912-9724.

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - The dam has broken at Beshel’s! Go anywhere you want to and throw just about anything you have or would like to try. Both the reds and trout are hitting. The better news is that Beshel’s has live shrimp as well as market bait. Even though some river water remains, it’s like someone threw a switch and Beshel’s went from a little to a lot. It’s good to see Beshel’s having available live shrimp and fishing success in the spring. If you go there, send us some pictures and a story or two about your success on the east bank. Beshel’s is still the place to catch your limits on the east bank and they have all your launch needs seven days a week. BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. The weather finally got right this weekend - 5 to 10 mph winds, very few clouds, plenty of live bait (shrimp and croakers). The offshore boats brought in big catches of yellowfin and blackfin tuna, snapper, grouper, some maui - and amberjack. Calm seas with just a few ground swells made things pleasant. With no breeze to speak of, it got pretty toasty - just a little taste of what July and August are going to be like. The inshore guides really got into the specks this past week. Some large catches and some big fish. The redfish are still out in large numbers and you might have to cull through the big bulls to find some keepers…a good problem to have. And remember to release those very big females because they are the future for this type of fishing in 10, 15, 20 years from now. A few flounders, drum and sheepsheads are being caught also. Memorial Day weekend had the boaters out in droves in Venice! Venice Marina has been as crowded as Bourbon Street on Saturday night. Come down and throw a line instead of throwing a strand of beads. The action is much more fun. Come to Plaquemines Parish and catch a lot of fish! CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

LARRY HOOPER “HOOP” - OUR FREEDOM CHARTERS. LOWER INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. On your day off, you like to go fishing. So do I. People think we are lucky because we fish every day. That is so far from the truth. We take people fishing every day. Our customers are expecting a great trip no matter what the conditions. We get some people that have no idea what a fishing trip consists of. We have to show some how to use a fishing rod, etc. A couple of weeks ago, I had one day off and asked one of my neighbors to take a quick run out for red snapper. We made the run out with my bay boat just outside of the pass and tied up. I hadn’t gotten any snappers this year. Our first drop and he gets robbed. This was the first of three drops and my neighbor is fishing with circle hooks; he’s not familiar with them. He realizes after a catch or two that there are bigger snapper out there and we return a four pounder to the water. Using a 7/0 circle hook, we had about 30 seconds from the time we got down near our target rig to either have a fish on or lose our bait. Using my 50 pound leader, some of the bigger fish tore the hooks out of their mouths or just broke off halfway up. Setting the hook while using these types of hooks were factors not in our favor that day. We put a few fish back and it was a quick easy morning run with a friend. We wound up with four snappers - from 6 to 13 pounds. “HOOP” 504-247-8459.

MORE HOOP - My inshore for the day was cancelled. One Eye Ed from Cajun Odyssey asked me to deck hand for him. This was a two boat bachelor trip and they wanted to fish near each other. The day was beautiful and as we ran down the river we had a parade following us. We spent about an hour making bait, snaring 15 pogies. We ran out 35 miles and set up camp. One of ourfriends had just left there, saying he marked and saw nothing. As we approached, we saw one fish busting. When we were putting out our baits, to our surprise we had one threadfin we picked up in our cast net. This bait was engulfed almost instantly. We landed a beautiful yellowfin - about 60 pounds. Now the tuna were busting again and out go our baits. It’s not long before we hook up again. As we are fighting this fish, a guy on the front hooks up to one with a popper. Before we could land that one, it breaks the line but we were able to get the one in the back of the boat. Our other boat landed a 20 pound class maui and then all hell broke loose when the marlin under our boat went over and hit their bait. After a long battle, they billed a 300 pound class blue marlin. The celebration was almost as good as the fight. We lost three others and landed a barracuda but unfortunately our box remained the same for the rest of the day. Most of the other boats also had a slow day but it was great to have calm seas and warm conditions all day for a change. Down here on any given day, somebody will have a banner day, even when the rest of us are having a slow day. It was our day to just be average. Life is good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that. HOOP - OUR FREEDOM CHARTERS. 504-247-8459.

CONSIDER NEXT YEAR’S FLOWERS, COLD INJURY WHEN PRUNING AZALEAS

Despite the colder than average winter, Louisiana azaleas provided a fair flower display this spring.

Those azaleas will need care during the next few months to assist in future growth and development.

Several things to consider include pruning to enhance flower bud formation for next year and what to do with plants exhibiting cold injury symptoms.

Terminal growth of some azaleas – especially those planted in open areas or where desiccating winds are prevalent – was damaged this winter. In addition, bark splitting is occurring on some azalea varieties.

To improve these situations, prune out terminal growth that has been damaged after spring flowering is completed. On stems showing evidence of bark splitting, prune below the damaged area.

Pruning even when it is not a tool correct growth in cold-damaged plants, is one of the most important cultural practices in maintaining azaleas. Pruning requirements for azaleas depend on plant age, growth habit desired, location in the landscape, flowering time and overall plant vigor.

Occasional thinning of growth will control size, encourage more branching and reduce the need for severe pruning or rejuvenation pruning later.

The standard recommendation on pruning azaleas is to prune any time after flowering through the first part of July.

Pruning later than this, especially anything more than light pruning, may remove some of the young flower buds being developed for next year.

Not all azaleas necessarily need to be pruned annually. Many dwarf azaleas don’t need regular pruning, and Southern indica type azaleas really need only tip pruning occasionally to encourage branching, eliminate bypass shoots and increase flower numbers.

In pruning, select sharp hand pruners to cut back shoots that are damaged or have become leggy. Cut back dying shoots to healthy green wood to prevent further dieback.

If desired, prune young, vigorously growing azaleas immediately after flowering and then prune very lightly again before the end of June. This formal pruning produces a very dense, compact growth habit and can double the number of flowers next spring.

Southern indica azaleas (Formosa, George Taber, G. G. Gerbing and others) can be grown vigorously and may overgrow their planting site. Always consider a plant’s mature size at planting time to avoid this common landscape problem.

If azaleas become overgrown, prune severely around the time new spring growth begins. This pruning should remove about one-half to as much as two-thirds of the new growth that resulted from the earlier pruning.

These steps can be followed to obtain control of overgrown azaleas. This may result in a reduction in flowering for a year or two, however.

Some azalea varieties are multi-seasonal flowering or have a tendency to flower at several times of the year – primarily fall and spring.

These plants generally should be pruned after flowering in the spring. Fall or winter pruning can be done, but it is possible the resultant growth may be more susceptible to cold damage.

IT AIN’T GORILLA BALL -BUT IT’LL DO FOR NOW

by Tony OnellionBack in the Skip Bertman days, the LSU Tigers dominated college baseball with offensive firepower rarely seen before or since. They called it “Gorilla Ball”. The team hit more home runs in one season than any other team in history…it wasn’t even close. A number of All Americans led these Tigers to College World Series titles in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 2000 and then Bertman moved up to Athletic Director, college baseball deadened the aluminum bats and the Gorilla Ball era ground to a crawl.

The Tigers have won their sixth title under current manager Paul Mainieri, who has had some great hitters and pitchers but recently have had hitting problems. That’s “recently” as in 2013 late season and most of 2014. But more recently, the Tigers have been on a tear like no other team

in the country and with their win in the SEC Tournament over number one ranked Florida on Sunday, they should be a lock to receive a national top eight ranking, which brings with it a Super Regional hosting.

The Tigers are used to having one road to Omaha go through Baton Rouge and no team in college baseball has been assuccessful in the College World Series since the end of the University of Southern California dominance in the 1960’s and 1970’s. With their 12 titles, the Trojans probably will never be passed as the king of college baseball. Probably the only team to challenge them is the Tigers, with six titles in 22 years and several misses in Omaha during that period.

This year, LSU might see some new teams with national recognition: TCU, Indiana, Oklahoma State and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette - the Ragin’ Cajuns. who beat LSU earlier in the year. But none of these teams have the type of pitching to control a College World Series like UCLA had last year or teams from Rice or Texas had in the recent past. The best pitcher with a chance to make it to Omaha perhaps is LSU’s Aaron Nola, a lock to be drafted in the top five or ten by Major League baseball this week. The Tigers have developed a reliable seven or eight pitchers behind Nola, especially in the bullpen. Pitching was always Skip Bertman’s forte’ and he still might be better than Mainieri in this area. But Coach Mainieri is a more complete manager than Bertman, with the ability to explain his strategy and the courage and candor to say things about his team, good and bad, and sound humble… things that others might say and sound boastful or denigrating. Mainieri can do more to move players around and get their best efforts and performances.

Those efforts will be necessary if LSU is to secure a seventh NCAA title and move into sole possession of second place on the CWS winners’ list, ahead of Texas. Texas was, ironically, the last team that LSU beat, in 2009, to secure their sixth title and Mainieri’s only one at LSU. LSU has never gone to the CWS as the national

favorite and won’t this year either….but then, rarely does the favorite take the title. I know that this year, the boring “small ball” played by last year’s champion UCLA will not be around….UCLA didn’t even make their tournament playoffs….and there are very few teams that try to play ball like the Bruins did last year. It takes great pitching, patience, great defense and more patience to do so and it’s tiresome, both to the players and the fans. It’s sort of like listening to a Curly Hallman interview back in the day, when radio announcers would find any excuse to cut away and do something else….anything else!

This might be the first LSU team to watch on a title run that really doesn’t depend on any one hitter or aspect of the game.

Nola is their superstar and the rest of the team is a solid hitting, solid fielding, solid pitching, versatile, knowledgeable group. They depend on each other….not one or two individuals. And that’s the best tribute to Paul Mainieri I can think of. This might be his best team. It started out strong, got humbled during much of the season and did not come close to matching last year’s win total or winning streak. But I have a feeling this team will go farther in Omaha because there is no UCLA type of team on the horizon and most of these LSU guys had to develop as the season progressed. And right now, they are “en fuego”.

No….it’s not Gorilla Ball. It’s more than that. It’s Godzilla Ball. And God help the rest of the NCAA baseball entries in postseason play if the Tigers continue their roll.
