The proposed township is situated in a beautiful

valley, well-sheltered from

the prevailing winds,

including both sides of the creek, in which there is

at all seasons abundance of fine water.

The adjoining hills afford extensive views of

Mount B

arker and the country around. As the

climate is salubrious, and the elevation from

the plains considerable, it is a m

ost desirable spot for sum

mer residences, particularly for persons

requiring change of air.The soil is deep, dark loam

,thickly covered with

a rich sward of grass, and the neighbourhood

abounds with good building freestone &

limestone.

From an advertisem

ent in The Register {predecessor of today’s Advertiser) of 23rd N

ovember 1839.

~N

airne was transform

ed in the early 1880s by the railw

ay, Chapmans factory, the tannery, saw

mills,

mining and a sm

elting works.

Bypassed by the freeway, it has retained its stone

village charm.

The Murals

The Nairne Historic M

urals project was started and

coordinated by Liz Hirstle, a local artist who runs a

painting school at the Jonathan Art Centre in Daw

esley.

Liz has been lucky to have the help of a number of

very talented local artists and groups. The Nairne and

District Residents Association and, in particular, Clive Pay, w

ho project managed the initial stages of the

project, raised much of the early funding and built

most of the panels on w

hich the murals are painted.

It would also not have been possible w

ithout the support of M

ayor Ann Ferguson, and many of the staff

of the District Council of Mount Barker.

The school mural w

as created by the Nairne Prim

ary School children w

ith the centre painting by Liz Hirstle. Each child painted his or her house.

The two m

urals of the ill-fated church bell were

painted by mem

bers of the ‘Big Week O

ut Festival’ group. Their ages ranged from

14 to 18.

The early map of N

airne in Byethorne Park was

created by a local young disabled group.
