About Rail I/O Modules – Series H
Honeywell’s Rail Input/Output Modules – Series H (RIOM-H) provide an efficient, compact, and seamlessI/O interface extension to the traditional rack-mounted I/O modules currently used with our PlantScape®system. They feature a galvanic isolation/intrinsic safety (GI/IS) design for mounting and operating in areaswith potentially explosive atmospheres. All of the RIOM-H components are certified, so you can easilydistribute them throughout a given location. Figure 1 shows a PlantScape system architecture where systemcomponents located in a non-hazardous area are seamlessly integrated with RIOM-H components in ahazardous area. Corrosion protection to test level G3, according to ISA-S71.04-1985, is a standard featureof Series H I/O components.

Features
Hardware, Communications, and Hazardous Classifications
Modular design for mounting and operating flexibility
The ControlNet Gateway module and terminal base components are the backbone of any RIOM-Hinstallation. You simply snap these components on a 35 mm by 7.5 mm or 15 mm, metal, top hat, rail (DINEN50022) and connect them together to form an instant internal backplane bus. Each terminal base featuresa mechanical key, so you can quickly configure it to support any one of the given plugin I/O modulesbefore making field wiring connections to the base.
A single Gateway can handle serial data communications with up to eight terminal bases with anycombination of plugin I/O modules, as shown in Figure 2. Each terminal base represents one I/O group. Azero-based numbering scheme is used to number the I/O groups starting with the left most terminal basenumbered as Group 0. For configuration purposes, the Group Number is the equivalent of the IOM SlotNumber used for Rack I/O modules. The Gateway serves as the communication interface between theintrinsically safe I/O data on the backplane bus and the coupled I/O data on the I/O data bus to thePlantScape system.
Figure 2. A single Gateway supports up to eight Terminal Bases with any combination of
Digital and Analog I/O modules.
ControlNet Communications
The ControlNet Gateway module serves as the communications interface between the PlantScapeControlNet system and the internal backplane bus. A ControlNet Fiber Optic system converts theControlNet coax signals into signals for fiber optic cable transmission and vice versa. The fiber opticsystem consists of a Repeater Adapter module and a Fiber Module that are available in models for use innon-hazardous and hazardous locations. These modules are also designed for mounting on a top hat, DINrail.
The Repeater Adapter translates the bi-directional signals from the ControlNet Coax into two uni-directional Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) signals for the Fiber Module and vice versa. The FiberModule in turn translates the TTL signals into signals for fiber optic transmission and vice versa. Adistance of up to 3 kilometers (9,842 feet) is supported via the medium-distance Fiber Module, and thisdistance can be extended by use of intermediary Fiber Repeaters. The fiber optic system provides a secureand reliable communications bridge between the ControlNet Gateway module in a hazardous location andthe PlantScape ControlNet system in a non-hazardous location. Figure 3 shows a typical ControlNetGateway to Fiber Optic system architecture for non-redundant ControlNet media. A parallel Fiber Opticsystem (recommended) is required to support redundant ControlNet media.

Galvanic Isolation and Intrinsic Safety
The GI/IS Rail Input/Output Modules – Series H provide an interface between the PlantScape systemequipment in a non-hazardous location and sensors and actuators located in a hazardous area. As an ISinterface, the RIOM-H products limit electrical energy (voltage and current) below a critical level whichwould result in ignition of any flammable mixture in the hazardous process area.
They also provide galvanic isolation between circuits according to DIN EN 50 020. For example, theinternal backplane bus is isolated from the inputs/outputs (field side) of the I/O modules, the non-hazardouspower supply is isolated from the intrinsically safe power supply channels, and the intrinsically safeControlNet is isolated from the intrinsically safe I/O data bus.
Hazardous classifications
Hazardous gases and substances are classified into groups according to the amount of energy required tocause ignition. The following table summarizes the different classification of these groups by IEC counties(including Europe) and North America.

In addition, the hazardous areas are further classified by the probability that the hazardous atmosphere willbe present. The following table summarizes the three zone classifications used in IEC/European countriesand the two division classifications used in North America.
IEC Countries (CENELEC) United States of America and Canada
Zone Description Division Description
0 A hazardous atmosphere iscontinuously present or present forlong periods.
1 A hazardous atmosphere is likely tooccur in normal operation.
1 A hazardous atmosphere iscontinuously, intermittently, orperiodically present in normaloperation.
2 A hazardous atmosphere is not likelyto occur in normal operation and, if itoccurs, it will exist only for a short time.
2 A hazardous atmosphere is onlylikely to be present under abnormalconditions
The user is responsible for classifying the areas of the process and defining the boundaries.
Appendix A includes some more detailed information about hazardous classifications for general reference.
Note that enclosures are required to meet CE compliance and they are highly recommended for allhazardous area installations.

North American Classification of Hazardous Locations
Electrical Codes
Installation of electrical apparatus within hazardous (classified) locations of the United States is conductedunder the provisions of the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70, Article 500; and withinCanada, under the provisions of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) C22.1, Part 1, Section 18.
Classifications
In both the United States and Canada, hazardous locations are classified into one of these three classes.
Class Description of Hazardous Location
I Presence of flammable gases or vapors may be present in quantities sufficient to produceexplosive or ignitable mixtures.
II Presence of combustible dusts, powders or grains.
III Presence of easily ignitable fibers or flyings.
Divisions
The classes listed above are further classified into one of the following divisions based upon the level ofrisk present.
Division Description of Risk
1 Locations in which hazardous concentrations of flammable gases or vapors, or combustibledust in suspension are continuously, intermittently or periodically present under normaloperating conditions.
2 Locations in which flammable gases or vapors are present, but normally confined withinclosed containers or systems from which they can escape only under abnormal or faultconditions. Combustible dusts are not normally in suspension nor likely to be thrown intosuspension.
For example, A Class III, Division 1 location is a location in which easily ignitable fibers or materialprocessing combustible flyings are handled, manufactured or used. A Class III, Division 2 location is alocation in which easily ignitable fibers are stored or handled.
Appendix A – Hazardous Locations Reference - North American Classification of Hazardous Locations
47
Groups
Flammable gases, vapors and ignitable dusts, fibers and flyings are classified into one of the followinggroups according to the energy required to ignite the most easily-ignitable mixture within air.
Class IGroup
Description of Atmosphere
A Atmospheres containing acetylene.
B Atmospheres containing hydrogen, fuel and combustible process gases containing morethan 30 percent hydrogen by volume, or gases or vapors of equivalent hazard

Apparatus Parameters
The Intrinsically Safe Apparatus Parameters are defined as follows.
Parameter Description
Vmax (Ui) Maximum safe voltage which can be applied to the apparatus terminals.
Imax (Ii) Maximum safe current which can be applied to the apparatus terminals.
CI Unprotected capacitance in the apparatus which can be considered present at theterminals.
Li Unprotected inductance in the apparatus which can be considered present at theterminals.
Appendix A – Hazardous Locations Reference - North American Classification of Hazardous Locations
49
The Associated Apparatus Parameters are defined as follows.
Parameter Description
Voc (Uo) Maximum output voltage which can be delivered to the hazardous (classified) location. This voltage is the maximum from a single channel.
Isc (Io) Maximum output current which can be delivered to the hazardous (classified) location. This current is the maximum from a single channel.
*Vt Maximum output voltage which can be delivered to the hazardous (classified) location. This voltage is the maximum across any combination of terminals of a multiple channelconfiguration.
*It Maximum output current which can be delivered to the hazardous (classified) location. This current is the maximum through any combination of terminals of a multiple channelconfiguration.
Ca (Co) Maximum capacitance which can be connected to the apparatus.
La (Lo) Maximum inductance which can be connected to the apparatus.
*CSA does not recognize these parameters at this time.
Entity Concept
A field device mounted in the hazardous area, such as a transmitter, must be certified if it is capable ofstoring energy. However, if it is a “simple device” or “nonvoltage producing” device that neither generatesor stores significant energy, no certification of the field device is required. A thermocouple is an exampleof a “simple device.”
The Entity concept allows interconnection of intrinsically safe apparatus to associated apparatus notspecifically examined in such combination. The criteria for interconnection is that the voltage (Vmax) andcurrent (Imax ), which intrinsically safe apparatus can receive and remain intrinsically safe, consideringfaults, must be equal to or greater than the voltage (Voc or Vt ) and current (Isc or It ) levels which can bedelivered by the associated apparatus, considering faults and applicable factors.
In addition, the maximum unprotected capacitance (Ci ) and inductance (Li ) of the intrinsically safeapparatus, including interconnecting wiring, must be less than or equal to the capacitance (Ca ) andinductance (La ) which can be safely connected to the associated apparatus. Field wiring has distributedcapacitance and inductance capable of releasing energy. Because IS requirements are concerned with theamount of energy that can be released from circuits in a hazardous area, the stored energy in the distributedinductance and capacitance of the cable must be considered in determining the length of the field wiring. Ifthese criteria are met, then the combination may be connected and remain intrinsically safe.

International Electrotechnical Commission Classification ofHazardous Locations
About IEC
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has established a number of recommendationsapplying to the construction of explosion protected electrical apparatus identified. These recommendationsare found within IEC 79-0 through 79-15 and 79-28.
For all EC countries as well as various neighboring countries (CENELEC member states), the EuropeanStandards EN 50 014 to EN 50 020 and EN 50 039 apply for the construction of explosion protectedelectrical apparatus. They were established on the basis of the IEC. However these recommendations aremuch more detailed by comparison.
Zones
Within IEC7-10, hazardous locations are classified into one of these three zones.
ZONE Description of Hazardous Location
0 Explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously, or is present for long periods.
1 Explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation.
2 Explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it does occur, itwill exist for a short period only.
IEC Groups
Flammable gases, vapors and mists are further classified into groups according to the energy required toignite the most easily-ignitable mixture within air. Apparatus is grouped according to the atmospheres itmay b used within as follows:
Group Description of Atmosphere
IIC Atmospheres containing acetylene, hydrogen, fuel and combustible process gases orvapors of equivalent hazard.
IIB Atmospheres such as ethyl ether, ethylene, or gasses or vapors of equivalent hazard.
IIA Atmospheres such as acetone, benzene, butane, cyclopropane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methanol, methane, natural gas, naphtha, propane or gases or vapors of equivalent hazard.

NEMA and IEC Comparison
IEC Publication 529, Classification of Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures, provides a systemfor specifying the enclosures of electrical equipment on the basis of the degree of protection provided bythe enclosure. IEC 529 does not specify degrees of protection against mechanical damage of equipment, risk of explosion, or conditions such as moisture (produced for example by condensation), corrosivevapors, fungus, or vermin. NEMA Standards Publication 250, Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000Volts Maximum), does test for environmental conditions such as corrosion, rust, icing, oil, and coolants. For this reason, and because the tests and evaluations for other characteristics are not identical, the IECenclosure classification designations cannot be exactly equated with NEMA enclosure type numbers.
Basically, the IEC designation consists of the letters IP followed by two numerals. The first characteristicnumeral indicates the degree of protection provided by the enclosure with respect to persons and solidforeign objects entering the enclosure. The second characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protectionprovided by the enclosure with respect to the harmful ingress of water.
The table below provides an approximate conversion from NEMA enclosure type numbers to IECenclosure classification designations. The NEMA types meet or exceed the test requirements for theassociated IEC classifications; for this reason the Table cannot be used to convert from IECclassifications to NEMA types.
