The name of “Fortunate Islands” is given, among other reasons, because of its eternal spring climate, with a temperature that varies a mere 6° C between the seasons, providing the possibility of sunbathing and swimming in the sea throughout the entire year, with an average temperature of between 18 and 24° C.

Situated just a little more than 6º above the Tropic of Cancer, very near the African coast and bathed by the trade winds, the climate is subtropical. At the same time, the variety of terrain, with tall mountains, create a fascinating climatic diversity.

Additionally, the current dubbed “Canary Current” maintains the water temperature below the temperature corresponding to its latitude, between 22° C in summer and 19° C in winter. This favourable climate creates a feeling of well-being, reflected in the friendly character of its inhabitants, both of the islanders as well as of the many foreigners who have chosen the Canary Islands as a second home during winter.

The island of Gran Canaria has an area of 1521 km2 representing 21% of the total territory of the archipelago and a population of 838,397 of whom 381,847 reside in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. TELECOMMUNICATION

PORT OF LAS PALMAS The Port of Las Palmas lies on the north east coast of the island of Gran Canaria, at latitude 28º07´N and the longitude 15º24´W

It receives natural protection from the volcanic hills of La Isleta, to the north, which act as a barrier against the prevailing north-west trade winds. This protection is reinforced by the Reina Sofia breakwater, which runs north south and is 3.905 metres in length.

The port is divided into two dock basins, The Dársena Exterior and Dársena Interior, which are separated by a linear pier, the Muelle León y Castillo. There is a total water area of 2.000 hectares.

A total area of 3.215.532 square metres of which 1.929.710 square metres is on concession or available for new users. Total quay length is 13.285 metres.

The Port of Las Palmas offers 40.000 square metres of covered storage as well as 300.000 square metres of open storage as well as 300.000 cubic metres of storage capacity for fuel oil.

The strategic location of the Canary Islands, at a crossroads between Africa, Europe and America, is a key factor in the modern-day role of the Port of Las Palmas as a logistics centre for three continents and the busiest port in an area covering the eastern Mid Atlantic and West Africa.

These advantages, have led to a comprehensive range of port services, thus creating a sort of universal port of call, equipped to deal with ships and traffic flows of all kinds.

It is often said that Las Palmas is really five different types of port combined in one:

- A commercial port, focused mainly on container handling, with an annual throughput of about 1.5 million teu (ranking fourth in Spain and 75th in the world league)

- A service port with a long tradition of competence in bunkering, provisions and shiprepair- A fishing port used as a base by international fleets.- A passenger port with high levels of traffic in both the cruise and ferry sectors.- A yacht marina, ideally positioned to support transatlantic crossing.

Africa: A natural partner

Apart from being a distribution platform for the Canary Islands and a transhipment centre for Spain, Las Palmas has become a vital hub for trade with West Africa, because of to the shortage of modern facilities in the countries of that region and thanks to the quality of services it offers.

About 35% of the port´s traffic originates from or is bound for Africa, largely through a well developed feeder system. Las Palmas has connections with 71 ports in the whole of Africa. In particular, 22 'hot lines' ensure weekly links to ports in West Africa.
