planning the ideal remote repeater site
DESCRIPTION
This presentation will cover, at a high level, the factors that need to be addressed in planning and implementing a remote radio repeater site. It aims to help avoid costly mistakes resulting from insufficient planning. It will not provide a template, but will include an overview of such topics as: - Location - Access - Choice of shelter - Antenna support structure - Coverage (and antenna selection) - Power selection and autonomy - Thermal loading considerations - Earthing - Safety and security - Climate - Site management - Threats - lightning, wildlife, climate, fire, theft, bird damage etc Good and bad examples of each topic will be discussed, with a brief explanation of the pitfalls arising from poor choices. Remote RBS-‐Loca7on BUT
• As well as finding an ideal site with a desktop study you also need to consider:
• Access • Availability of Power • Site Ownership • Requirement for Building Permits • Delivery to site
COMMS CONNECT 2014 4
Remote RBS-‐ Shelter
• Method of Construc?on (Thermal Proper?es) • Security • Size • Ligh?ng • Cooling • Installa?on Standards

THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY
Remote RBS-‐Antenna Design
COMMS CONNECT 2014 7
• Not automa?cally Omni-‐direc?onal • Low PIM • Beware mutual coupling • Single vs dual installa?on • Protec?on
Remote RBS-‐Power

Remote RBS-‐Earthing
• Earthing is required for protec?on • Protec?on of Life: Step and touch • Protec?on of equipment : Surge Suppression – not just lightning
• Protec?on of informa?on: Noise reduc?on • These requirements not always compa7ble

Remote RBS-‐Threats
• Human • Birds and insects– damaging feeder and nes?ng
• Rodents – damage infrastructure and a`ract • Snakes • Natural – clima?c events • Fire
