Seed collection

Labelling of founders

• All rare native plants in the wild are labelled

• This includes descriptive location, GPS point, altitude, habitat data, soil type, associated species, population information such as number of plants, area covered etc..

Seed accession

• Note species name, place seeds come from, date collected, date accesssioned, amount collected, name of collectors, accession number, number of founders from which seeds collected, type of propagule; seeds, fruits

Seed management

• Seed cleaning• Allow fruits to rot• Seed drying in shade• Protection against pest

seed storage

• Once cleaned and dried seeds are stored at room T if they are to be sown soon if not they are stored in a fridge

Collection of cuttings

• Same procedure except storage, cuttings done immediately.

Problems encountered

• Wrong planning resulting in lost of seeds• Seeds collected by competitors• Bad climatic conditions cyclone, strong wind,

heavy rain• Climatic change affecting seed collection
