Opportunities India’s Urbanization to 2030…

68 cities – will have population of 1 million plus, up from 42 today.

$ 1.2 trillion capital investment is necessary to meet projected demand in India’s cities.

India’s Urbanization Critical issues...

“we are like this only”Inadequate Housing

Inadequate Transport systems…

Poor Local Governance

Weak Finances Unplanned expansion within cities

Critical Infrastructure shortage

Rapidly deteriorating environment...

India’s Urbanization 2030What we must do ?

• Creation of well planned - New Satellite Cities around big cities (ex Delhi-Noida, F’bad, Gurgaon, Dwaraka)

• Planned zones/ sectors – self contained with water/ sewage, garbage, etc

• Built by side of express highway with arterial roads, metros, etc linked to main city.

• Cities to be planned with elite to affordable & mass housing with societal interests taken care off

• Must for success is Public Transportation/ Schooling/ Water/ Sewage & Garbage processing

- Elevated Roads/ Express Highways/ Rail Corridors/ Mass Rapid Transit systems

• Emphasis on climate friendly technologies.

Chennai - Urban Infrastructure Development

• Infrastructure development is the key initiative to improve the economy

• Key sectors to focus..– Transportation & Parking – Water supply– Sanitation– Power– Health, Education & Entertainment– Affordable Housing

Page 16: Planning & Delivering Urban Infrastructure for Chennai Special Address by S.N.Subrahmanyan

Chennai - Transportation & Parking• Immediate requirements

– Cleaning of roads & clearing encroachments– Traffic regulation / management– Subways & foot over bridge– Flyovers at critical junctions

• Long-term requirements– Metros– Mono rail– Elevated road corridors– Multilevel car parking– Airports

Page 17: Planning & Delivering Urban Infrastructure for Chennai Special Address by S.N.Subrahmanyan

Chennai - Water Supply• Immediate requirements

– Increase in the quality, quantity & coverage of supply

– Restoration of water reservoirs• Long-term requirements

– Water recharging systems– Improved Water management – Desalination Plants – Linking of rivers– Recycling of water

Page 18: Planning & Delivering Urban Infrastructure for Chennai Special Address by S.N.Subrahmanyan

Chennai - Sanitation• Immediate requirements

– Sanitation awareness– Construction of public toilets– Effective storm water management– Collection & recycling of waste

• Long-term requirements– Cleaning of existing sewers, coovam, adyar– Underground sewer network– Sewer treatment plants (at basin level)

Page 19: Planning & Delivering Urban Infrastructure for Chennai Special Address by S.N.Subrahmanyan

Chennai - Power• Immediate requirements

– Provide uninterrupted power supply– Insist for the use of solar energy – Arrest power losses

• Long-term requirements– Drive Nonconventional energy production like

Nuclear power / Solar / wind power plants– Create utility service corridors

Suggestions for Implementation

• Create a nodal department / institution for each area

• The nodal department is accountable for implementation of all facilities and governed by four parameters while implementation i.e Time, Quality, Safety & Inconvenience to public / citizen.

• Attract the corporates / companies with tax benefits for implementation area-wise / key sector-wise

Divide in to Zones
