Dear LSU Friends,

The most rewarding part of my job is helping donors leave a legacy at LSU. In every case, the donors I meet feel passionately about the areas of the university they choose to support, and it is truly an honor to collaborate on turning those passions into long-term—and, often, perpetual—support of LSU.

Planning for the next step beyond our own lives can feel like a daunting task. We want to provide for ourselves while we are living, and for our loved ones and the causes that are important to us after we are gone. There are many tools that can pro-vide income to you in your retirement while also supporting nonprofit organizations like the LSU Foundation. There are also many ways to do that in a manner that best benefits your loved ones.

In the following pages, you will learn a bit about some of the most popular opportunities to make a planned gift. We have also included sample bequest language, worksheets to help guide your plans, and, of course, everything you need to get in touch with my team.

Jane Henslee, Mona Becnel and I have more than 80 years of experience working with donors one-on-one to realize their philanthropic visions. We are passionate and knowledgeable about LSU and can help you leave a lasting legacy that celebrates the aspects of the Tiger spirit you hold most dear.

Thank you for your generous support of LSU.

Forever LSU,

MEMBERSHIP: Recognizing Your GenerosityIf you have included the LSU Foundation in your estate plans, we hope you will allow us the opportunity to personally thank you and share with you the benefits of membership in the 1860 Society. Membership is conferred to anyone who submits documentation—through a letter of intent or a copy of the relevant portion of one’s will—naming the LSU Foundation as a beneficiary in his or her estate. Planned gifts can include trusts, insurance policies, annuities and retirement plans, among other options.

We understand that you may not wish to be acknowledged publicly. Even if that is the case, we would appreciate the opportunity to thank you for your generosity and hear about your connection to LSU. We can also help you ensure your gift will be directed in the way you intend by providing guidance related to bequest language. It is import-ant to us that your wishes are honored.

To let us know you intend to include the LSU Foundation in your estate plans, please visit www.lsufoundation.org/1860society to download our letter of intent. A roster of 1860 Society members is included in pages 16-18 of this booklet.

If you plan to make a bequest to the LSU Foundation for the benefit of a unit or col-lege at LSU, the LSU AgCenter or the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, your will and/or trust should name the legal entity “LSU Foundation”—rather than “LSU” or “Lou-isiana State University”—to clearly indicate the intent of your bequest. Gifts to “LSU” or “Louisiana State University” become state funds, whereas gifts to “LSU Foundation” are private dollars managed for and invested by the LSU Foundation on behalf of the college or unit(s) you wish to support.

MAKING YOUR BEQUEST: Who to Name

Page 5: Planned Giving Legacy Guide

BEQUEST LANGUAGE: Defining Your Gift

Dr. George and Mrs. Klileen Jones began giving to LSU in 1984. Since then, their commitment to supporting LSU has remained constant. They have also included LSU in their estate plans—to ensure that support con-tinues beyond their own lives. In celebration of Klileen’s appreciation for music, she has included a bequest of half of her estate to the School of Music, through the LSU Foundation. The gift is unrestricted, which will allow the school the flexibility to allocate the funds where they are most needed.

“You’d like to think you know what’s going to happen to your money, and that’s where the Foundation is good. You’re trusting people to do it.”- Dr. George Jones

If you are considering leaving a gift in your will to support LSU, you may wish to share the following sample bequest language with your advisors.

I give, devise and bequeath to the LSU Foundation, including its successors and assigns, a 501(c)(3) qualified charitable organization whose role includes the accep-tance, management and disbursement of funds in support of Louisiana State Uni-versity and Agricultural and Mechanical College located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, [insert either: (a) the sum of $ ____________; or (b) _____ % of my estate; or (c) the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.] This gift should be used [insert either: (a) at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the LSU Foundation, or (b) in connection with the NAME OF PARTICULAR PROGRAM for the BENEFICIARY COLLEGE/SCHOOL/UNIT].

Any AWARDS/SCHOLARSHIPS/PROFESSORSHIPS established or funded with this gift should be designated as the [INSERT TITLE]. In the event that one or more of theprograms that are the intended beneficiary of this gift should cease to be offered by Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, the LSU Foun-dation shall have the discretion to determine an appropriate alternative use or uses of the funds after considering my original intent and the university’s needs.

Types of Planned Gifts

A planned gift to the LSU Foundation can be one of the easiest, most fulfilling ways to leave a legacy at LSU. There are several giving options that could help you give more than you thought possible while still achieving your personal financial goals. Your gift will support the program or unit at LSU that is most meaningful to you.

BEQUESTInclude a gift to the LSU Foundation in your will. Charitable bequests can be structured in many ways and are deductible for estate tax purposes. A will is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family.

RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETSSimply name the LSU Foundation as beneficiary of part or all of your IRA or retirement plan. This could result in estate tax savings and, in some cases, income tax savings.

APPRECIATED PROPERTYDonate securities or real estate that you have owned for over a year and avoid capital gains tax on appreciation. You may also qualify for a charitable income tax deduction equal to the full value of the donated assets.

LIFE INSURANCE POLICYSimply name the LSU Foundation as beneficiary of your life insurance policy. This could result in estate tax savings. Or, donate a policy you no longer need and qualify for an itemized income tax deduction.

LIFE INCOME PLANSEstablish a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity plan that makes life-time payments to you, your spouse or anyone you name. The remainder will pass to the LSU Foundation for the purpose you specify. The amount projected to pass to the LSU Foundation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTEstablish a charitable lead trust to make payments to the LSU Foundation for a set peri-od of time. The remainder will then pass to your children or grandchildren. A lead trust can create significant gift and estate tax savings.

of GiftsRetirement Assets

Retirement assets bequeathed to individuals may be taxed

50 to 60 percent.

Gifts of retirement assets made to the LSU Foundation are not taxed, and the estate may

benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction.

Martha Richard never attended LSU, but she recogniz-es how the university has impacted her life. Soon after her late first husband, architect T. Byron Smith, passed away, Richard bought a single premium life insurance policy on herself that will benefit LSU on Smith’s behalf. Richard’s insurance investment will double when real-ized, benefiting the College of Art + Design, but she also helps students now. After Smith’s death, Richard began celebrating his birthday by giving to the Thomas Byron Smith Memorial Scholarship. In 2014, which would have been Smith’s 70th birthday, Eva Rodriguez (at right) was the recipient.

“LSU enabled him to do so many things. He accom-plished so much in his lifetime that I felt he would want me to give back on his behalf, for everything he was able to do with his life.”- Martha Richard, on late husband T. Byron Smith

Anne Hendershot Wong bears LSU’s colors as though she were born in them. She even walks campus like an LSU alumna, with a familiarity that could come only from someone who remembers seeing the 1958 Chinese Bandits take the field in person. And, though she went to Ole Miss, that doesn’t stop Wong from honoring her family’s deep and lasting LSU roots: her late parents met on campus, and her father was an LSU economics professor. She has committed to bolster a scholarship established by her parents, Dr. Paul T. and Mrs. Theresa Lacy Hendershot, through a portion of her estate.

“LSU just runs in your blood ... Dad always said he wanted to give back to the institutions that had given so much to him. He had this inner drive that wanted every-one to have an education ... There’s a pride of knowing that we support LSU.” - Anne Hendershot Wong, shown with husband Sit
