Pierre Alexandre Claudius Balmain was a French
fashion designer. Known for Sophistication and Elegance,
he said that "dressmaking is the architecture of movement.” Pierre Balmain was born
in Savoie, France in 1914.
Balmain owed his training to Molyneux, a great haute couture of the time.
Pierre Balmain opened his first shop in 1945 in Paris, his own Haute Couture house.
After the War, his style was recognized as “New French Style”,
using luxury Fabrics sculpturally for the creation of designs accenting pure structure,
This image of an active, irrepressible, perfectly groomed, elegant woman with a touch of independence in her nature root
and was embodied in the "Jolie Madame", emblematic of the nineteen-fifties. He shared with Christian Dior,
one of the most important french heritage in the fashion world: “ The New Look”, characterized by a long
length, large bust and small waist, focusing the madame silhouette.
In 1982 Pierre Balmain died and the fashion house was headed by Erik Mortensen. Mortensen was followed by the elegant
Oscar de la Renta in 1993.
The Designer Christopher Decarnin arrived at Balmain fresh from a
training at Paco Rabanne.
He quickly implanted in Balmain house a fresh and renavoted style take on the classic couture-
driven looks: ladylike refinement cut with a contemporary rock edge.
Balmain’s super-feminine looks were favorites among European royalty
and Hollywood fashion stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and
Sophia Loren. Since Balmain death the house has been owned for designers including, Gilles
Dufour and Laurent Mercier, and now Christopher Decarnin.
