Recall: radicals have restrictions (non-permissible values) for which the variables in the radicand are not defined. Steps:

1. arrange the terms so that the radical (or radical and it's coefficient) are on one side of the equal sign and all other terms are on the other side of the equal sign2. take the radicand and write an inequality were the radicand is greater than or equal to zero3. solve for the variable and write the final restriction for the radical equation.4. solve the radical normally5. check solutions with the restrictions and reject any extraneous roots.

2.5 Solving Radical Equations (2.4 Solving Graphically if time - otherwise next class)

Page 6: Plan Going Forward

Solve radical equations using the Principle of Powers and always CHECK your solutions in the equation to verify solutions and find any extraneous roots.

Principle of Powers basically means square both sides of the equation and simplify.

Solving equations with TWO radicals and another term or other terms:Here you will do the Principle of Powers (square both side) TWICE•

You can use your technology to solve any equation by doing the following: Method 1 steps:

1. Leave the equation as it is and use your method for determining the restrictions2. Type one side of the equation in y1 and the other side of the equal sign into y2 , adjust the window settings and press "graph". To solve, determine the x-intercepts.

Shift (2nd function) -> Trace (for Calc) -> select 2: for zeros -> →Move cursor to left side of x-intercept and press enter. Do the same for the right side. Press enter for the guess.

The x-coordinate is the solution.→

Method 2 steps:1. Move all terms to one side of the equal sign and make the equation equal zero.2. Type the equation in y1 and adjust the window settings and press "graph". To solve, determine the intercepts between the graphs.

Shift (2nd function) -> Trace (for Calc) -> select 5:intercept -> →Move the cursor on top of the intercepts→Press "Enter" on your calc. three times to finish answering their questions.

The x-coordinate is the solution.→
