PLAN AND SHAPE THEMOBILITY OF THE FUTURE
TTK AT A GLANCE
TransportTechnologie-Consult Karlsruhe
GmbH (TTK) is owned by Albtal-Verkehrs-
GesellschaftmbH (AVG) and PTV Transport
Consult GmbH (PTV Group). AVG is known as
the pioneer operator of the TramTrain (opera-
tion on 600 km of routes, ownership of 340 km
of rail infrastructure); PTV Group is the biggest
German transport and traffic consulting and
software company operating world-wide (their
products include VISUM, VISSIM etc.).
The success of the TramTrain concept was the
starting point of TTK which was established as
a TramTrain and light rail competence centre.
As the company grew our activity spectrum
and expertise developed. Today, more than 20
years later and although the rail mode remains
one of its core fields of expertise TTK is widely
recognized for its general transport studies and
public transport planning.
TTK is made up of an international team of
more than 35 employees.
The international know-how transfer is thus
TTK’s special trademark.
As a result of the collaboration between
French and German professionals within project
teams, clients benefit from the experience
acquired in both neighbouring countries.

FIELD OF COMPETENCE:
INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNINGTTK provides holistic consulting and planning services
for modern and barrier-free transport facilities for public
clients and operators.
The range of tasks includes planning services from the
first considerations of constructional feasibility to preli-
minary and detailed design to implementation planning,
tendering and awarding. This division competently moni-
tors the quality, deadlines and costs of the projects.
In order to implement construction projects in a targeted,
timely and cost-conscious manner, in addition to solid
preparation and planning, monitoring of the construction
measures is essential.
By ensuring the construction supervision, we can guaran-
tee the professional execution of your project.
As a general contractor, we manage all the building sections
and phases and act as the client’s main contact for the
overall project.
We like taking on new challenges, such as BIM planning
and design, which we are already implementing as part
of a pilot project. This is an example of our corporate phi-
losophy in which acquisition of new methods, know-how
and tools play an important part.
Technical analyses and economical appraisal help to find
possible infrastructure options for operators, transport
authorities, infrastructure companies.
The close and active collaboration with our shareholder
AVG enables us to offer them practical advice.
Intelligent road planning also means finding the right
balance between the different interests of different road
users, between administration, operators and citizens.
Therefore, we plan for all modes involved, designing and
implementing integrated solutions, including for example
cycle and pedestrian paths, cycle highways, bus stations,
bus stops and parking lots.
We push ourselves to offer functional and technically
sophisticated solutions, which fulfil the requirements of
economic, social and ecological sustainability.

FIELD OF COMPETENCE:PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLANNING
In the field of transport planning the division provides
strategic development studies in public transport such as
citywide line network optimization, transport master plans
and public transport concepts or studies on the intermodal
linking of various modes of transport, but also increasingly
dealing with non-motorized traffic, especially bicycle facili-
ties and paths.
Feasibility studies are the core competence of TTK, where
we deal with TramTrain, road and rail projects, as well as
the restructuring of bus networks. In addition to the strate-
gic, operational and infrastructural aspects, business and
economic analyses are also conducted.
The division also works in some highly specialized fields
such as operational planning, by developing operation con-
cepts with the help of static and dynamic simulation tools.
If required, this can be done on a detailed timetable level.
The special requirements of electrical busses is a new task
in our scope of work.
In vehicle technology, the focus is on tram and light rail
vehicles, two-system and hybrid technology, as well as
regional railcars and more recently on electric busses. In
addition to the analysis of existing fleets and the develop-
ment of procurement strategies, the support of vehicle
tenders from the first concept to the purchase decision.
TTK also advises companies which are aiming to reduce
their carbon footprint. Through mobility plans, we develop
new mobility and transport options for their employees.
Fares, ticketing studies, and management consultancy
complete our portfolio of services to support transport
authorities.
Today mobility has to be considered more and more in-
tegrated across different means of transports. With MAAS
(Mobility as a Service), TTK is aware that the real challenge
is to distinguish the „momentary trends“ and the real, pro-
found changes in the quick rise of new technologies, such
as the digitization of mobility or autonomous shuttles.

PROJECT HANDLING: INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH AND COOPERATION
TTK works slightly differently to a classical engineering
office, because it is always able to incorporate the experience
from both areas of competence into projects in order to
develop holistic solutions to complex problems.
Projects that go from strategic planning and designing
to full implementation are rare. Nevertheless, TTK is well
positioned to almost completely process such projects.
More important and more common, however, are projects
in which the different competences are integrated.
TTK teams are often made up of by employees from both
areas of expertise, who bring the experience of infrastructure
planning into strategic transport planning, whether in the
form of creative design proposals or in the form of reliable
cost estimates for infrastructure.
Conversely, the experience of planning transport offer helps
define infrastructure requirements.
Good examples are feasibility studies for light rail or regio-
nal railways that require a holistic approach. Infrastructure
requirements for tracks and stations have to be developed
along with the planning of supply and the operating con-
cept in order to find an optimised, efficient and effective
overall solution that is technically and financially feasible.
Working according to the principle of integration, TTK
is not simply an engineering firm with two fields of com-
petence, but a consulting unit with the aim of offering
complete expertise in all projects.
We also follow this principle externally. That is why we
often and gladly work with partners. They complete our
know-how with their specific expertise when it is required
for broader projects.
Last but not least, our customers are also our partners in
project processing and communication, a key component
for sustainable project success.
The whole thing is more than the sum of its parts.

enjoying extensive experience in all fields of public transport.
The team is mainly composed of engineers whose compe-
tences are spread over the whole range of public trans-
port from rail based systems to bus systems, including

supervision, vehicle specification, support for authorities in
tendering and public service contracts and operations.
The TTK team is enthusiastic about these topics and firmly
convinced of the key role of transport in the development
of our society.
We feel committed to the principles of sustainability and
