When a blogger recently wrote that Newcastle is the jazz capital of the world there was a touch of hyperbole, but I could see what he meant.
Tyneside today hosts as varied and imaginative a programme of gigs as you’ll find anywhere and our worldwide search for new developments and our willingness to take chances with little-known artists have made the local scene the envy of fans throughout the UK.
In 2015 we put on close to 50 gigs with musicians from 13 different countries, several making their UK debut. And 2016 - our 50th anniversary year - is shaping up to be even better; a highlight being an appearance at the Jazz Café on February 19 from Seven Pieces of Silver, a septet who celebrate the music of hard-bop pianist Horace Silver. Expect catchy, bluesy and soulful compositions, and remember our motto - ‘genre is secondary, quality is foremost’. jazznortheast.com

GET CARTER
Bringing Newcastle’s 1960s criminal underworld to the stage, Get Carter – adapted from the novel Jack’s Return Home, which was the basis of Mike Hodges’ 1971 film starring Michael Caine - is at Northern Stage ahead of a national tour. Adapted by Torben Betts, the darkly stylish play features music from Mercury Prize-nominated Nadine Shah and stars Newcastle-born Kevin Wathen as Jack Carter. This is what he told us...
How much has the film influenced you? The play’s very different; it’s less about the violence and more about what drives Jack. I was nervous at first, but as we’ve worked on it, it’s become easier to leave the film behind. I am still feeling the pressure, mind!
Is it good to be home in Newcastle? Yes! I followed in Jack’s footsteps from the opening lines of the novel by coming up from London on the train and crossing the Tyne. I love being home – London gets on your wick, man!
How did you research the role? I’ve read a lot about gangsters; realising they’re people just like everyone else has been fascinating. I also grew up in a tough area of Alnwick, which gave me a bit of reference material.
What’s it like portraying such an iconic character? Jack’s an anti-hero; he’s an arse on the surface, but when you explore how he ended up that way, and his concept of family values, it adds so much more.
Is this your normal kind of role?I tend to get the crazies, which is odd because I like to think I’m quite a nice guy.

Magic man
Dynamo’s real name is Steven Frayne. His stage name comes from a performance at New York’s Hilton hotel during Houdini’s centenary celebrations in front of other magical heroes including David Blaine. After his show, someone in the audience shouted, “This kid’s a ****ing dynamo!”
He’s only 5ft 6ins tall. Good thing he’s magic’d-up some big screens for the live tour.
Dynamo rose to fame after showing his talents to stars including Ian Brown, Mike Skinner and Snoop Dogg for YouTube videos. He’d blag his way backstage by impressing the doormen first. His first TV appearance came on Richard & Judy – still one of his favourite gigs.
He grew up on the rundown Delph Hill housing estate in Bradford and, after being taught the tricks of the trade by his pool hustler granddad, used magic as a means to fend off the bullies who teased him. We’re not sure how that worked either.
His TV show, Dynamo: Magician Impossible has been seen in more than 180 countries by some 250m viewers.
He holds the highest accolade of the Magic Circle (a bit like a union for
Prepare to be amazed, people! He’s walked on water, levitated above the Shard in London, predicted the World Cup outcome and taken a trip on the side of a bus, and now Dynamo is coming to the Metro Radio Arena on his first live tour. Here’s more…

folk who chop other folk in half) as a Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star, a position only held by 300 magicians worldwide, including HRH Prince of Wales. We thought you weren’t supposed to tell anyone? Or is that the Freemasons?
His list of celebrity fans includes Will Smith, P Diddy, Jay Z, Gwyneth Paltrow and (him again) Prince Charles.
His endorsements and sponsorship deals include Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Pepsi - and an Adidas advert with Missy Elliot, David Beckham and Estelle.
Online conspiracy theorists (how we love them) are convinced he is the Messiah. While he’s not the only one they’ve mooted (surprising, we know) they’re pretty set that he’s at least some kind of prophet.
There are a number of sites out there offering answers to the question: Dynamo – real or fake? The Internet is a strange place.
He’s properly magic. He can levitate, walk on water, turn lottery tickets into cash, walk down the side of buildings… Yep – properly magic.

NE1’s focus on tackling youth unemployment and providing work-ready young recruits has taken another step forward with the expansion of NE1’s Space2 centre for young people.
BBC business presenter Steph McGovern and North East author David Almond officially opened Space2’s new facility, which is operated and managed by YMCA Newcastle, on Pilgrim Street in February.
Space2 works with young people aged 13–18 from across Newcastle. To date it has worked with more than 3,000 young people to secure jobs, training and apprenticeships and its success has led to increased demand for its career services.
Space2 currently has more than 3,000 members with membership expected to increase with the increased capacity offered by the new centre and with the new careers and advice services being offered. Pilgrim Street, space2.org
