what it is and how to avoid it

What do you know? What do you want to know?

Plagiarism doesn’t just happen

while writing a paper…

Student Plagiarism. Digital image. GamezBlog. Web. 6 Apr. 2011.

What is it exactly?• According to the Oxford English

Dictionary, Plagiarism is,

“The action or practice of

taking someone else's

work, idea, etc., and

passing it off as one's

own; literary theft.”

"Plagiarism." Def. 1. Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford University Press, Mar. 2011. Web. 5 Apr.

2011. <http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/144939?redirectedFrom=plagiarism>.

In other words… it’s CHEATING!

3 Major Kinds of

Plagiarism

If you can recognize

plagiarism in a

paper, then you will

know how to avoid it

in the future!

VerbatimCopying something word-for-

word. It looks exactly the same

as the original writing.

ParaphrasingBorrowing somebody else’s writing

and changing a few words to make

it your own.

Use of an IdeaUsing somebody else’s idea for a

paper, project, or story and saying

you came up with it yourself.

Bedrosian, Wesley. "Beat the Cheat." Cartoon. Edutopia. The George Lucas Educational Foundation, 22 Mar. 2008. Web. 6 Apr.

2011. <http://www.edutopia.org/student-plagiarism-teacher-strategy>.

Having Academic IntegrityUsing other people’s ideas isn’t wrong. You

just need to tell your teachers where you

found your information! The easiest way?

Acknowledge

SourceWrite a

Bibliography or

Works Cited page

to list where you

found your

information.

Quotation MarksPut sentences in

“quotation marks” if

you want to copy a

sentence word-for-

word.

Give CreditSay what inspired

you and where

you got your idea.

Cite your work!

See if you can spot the type of

plagiarism in the following

examples.

Let’s try it together first.

Verbatim? Paraphrase?

Or, Use of an Idea?

Holden Caulfield takes the reader from

post-World War II prep school to the

seedy streets of New York City in this

1951 classic story. He also takes

along his dry sense of humor and a

spree of breaking each “rule” he

comes across… He manages to roam

the streets of New York City and avoid

the safe haven of his parents’ home all

the while. Not only are his encounters

full of rebellious energy, but Holden

slowly unveils a charming, though

extremely dark, vulnerability.

VERBATIM

Your turn! Is it verbatim,

paraphrase, or use of an

idea?

Original Text Student Work

Be warned, this book is not for the

weak of heart: Katniss expands in

detail on the misery and hollow cheeks

of living in poverty, and the violence of

the Games is unnerving. But the

parallels between this dystopia and our

current state of affairs, with the

demand for live television and the

scary effects of balancing

powers, make for the most disturbing

elements of the book. A truly horrific

and thoughtful pageturner, … readers

will root on Katniss and soak in the

details of the Games and this new

world, Parem.

The Hunger Games takes

place in the not so distant

future in a land once known

as North America. Katniss,

the heroine, discusses in

detail of the pain and

hunger of living in poverty,

and the violence of the

Hunger Games is disturbing.

This is a great read, and

really engaging for readers

of all ages.

PARAPHRASE

Tired of living in suburbia or wherever

you are? Why not try an alternate

reality with the bizarre

stories, poems, and

musings, accompanied by even more

surreal drawings, doodlings, and full-

color paintings from the strange brain

of Shaun Tan…. The 15 stories appear

to take place on Earth, but they’re set

in some weird neighborhood not even

on the map, where a stranger clad in

wet, barnacle-crusted diving gear

plods down the street…

“I was born with water on the brain.”

So begins the digressive and

loquacious narrative and cartoon

drawings of 14-year-old Arnold Spirit,

better known as Junior. He lays out

his limitations straight off: too much

cerebral spinal fluid at birth has left

him nearsighted in one eye and

farsighted in the other; he has huge

hands and feet, and a skull so

enormous, kids call him Orbit and

Globe…. How does Junior cope with

his life? He draws cartoons of

everyone he knows, thinking this might

be his ticket to becoming rich and

famous someday and escaping the

rez.

The Absolutely True Diary of a

Part-Time Indian begins with

the protagonist Junior

describing the different health

issues he has that makes him

different and picked on by the

kids at school. To cope with the

name calling, he draws

cartoons, thinking that will make

him famous and get him off of

the Reservation someday.
