Plagiarism
• Defined as the “reproduction or inclusion of another person’s creative work into one’s own work without providing proper attribution to the original author”
Plagiarism
• Most students understand “gross plagiarism”• A majority of students will admit to having plagiarized• Contributing factors:– Poor time management– Lack of academic preparation– Lack of research writing and citation skills– Information overload
• Culture is not a factor
Plagiarism

NOW WHAT?
After we review all the data and it still looks like plagiarism…
Plagiarism
• The first day of class– Reduce plagiarism by addressing the perceived
tolerance for cheating…others have, I can too– Consistency in policing and addressing plagiarism…
we can’t have different standards– Let the students know (and then use) you will be
using Safeassignment– Adopt and stick with a writing standard (APA is
what business schools use…require it)
Plagiarism
• Know the academic honor code and academic integrity policies of the university
• Use technology to help you detect abuses• In your syllabus prescribe the actions and
punishments if found in violation…and stick to them
• If we are consistent students will perceive these policies as fair and reasonable
Plagiarism
• “…no form of dishonesty among its faculty or students will be tolerated.”– Including plagiarism, bribery, cheating,
misrepresentation, conspiracy, etc.
