You may remember him from such blockbusters as:

&

Page 4: Plagiarism

He is also a comic creator & indie film maker

Page 5: Plagiarism

This is Daniel Clowes

Page 6: Plagiarism

He is best known for the creation of

In 2012 Shia released Howard Cantour.com a film that he had

created

Page 8: Plagiarism

Which was remarkably similar* to Justin M. Damiano a comic by

Daniel Clowes

Page 9: Plagiarism

* by “remarkably similar” I mean that it is an almost word for word recreation of the comic

Shia had previously claimed to have developed the script in order to understand the mind-set of critics who in the past have criticised his movies.

This boys & girls is known as:

PLAGIARISM!

Page 11: Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as:

The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.

New Oxford Dictionary of English

Page 12: Plagiarism

These are all examples of plagiarism

• Copying & pasting text from a website and passing it off as your own work

• Paraphrasing text and not citing the original source

• Handing in a previously submitted piece of work from another subject

• Copying work from a fellow student

Page 13: Plagiarism

Paraphrasing

is a restatement (rewriting) of the meaning of a text or passage using other words

Any exact words remaining must have quotation marks around them

If you do this but do not cite your source you are guilty of plagiarism

Page 14: Plagiarism

Avoiding plagiarism

• Plan your work (no last minute work in the library on the morning when it is due)

• Use multiple sources• Take notes by paraphrasing & summarising• If you use exact words & phrases use

“quotation marks” • Do not copy & paste from the internet – read

and then make notes without looking at the screen

Page 15: Plagiarism

Remember:

Cite it while you write it

– not after!

Page 16: Plagiarism

Example of citation

• In text: (Holt 1997) or Holt (1997) wrote that...

• Bibliography: Holt, DH 1997, Management principles and practices, Prentice-Hall, Sydney.

• Footnotes:

Page 17: Plagiarism

You do not need to cite if:

• The work is your own original creation• It is common knowledge:– The sky is blue– Margaret Thatcher was the first female Prime

Minister of Great Britain– You use a proverb e.g. “A watched pot never

boils!”

Page 18: Plagiarism

If you are not sure

Then add a citation

Page 19: Plagiarism

What happens when you are caught plagiarising?

• Your work may not be marked• You could fail the subject & it will affect all the

subjects you take under that exam board• It can go onto your permanent record• In University you can be expelled• You can face legal action• You can be fined• You can be jailed

Page 20: Plagiarism

What happened to Shia? Well he acknowledged what he had

done (sort of)…

Page 21: Plagiarism

But it turned out that he plagiarised that from Lili on Yahoo answers

Page 22: Plagiarism

and finally he apologized
