The people moulds will help to produce well proportionedfigures. In the set there are moulds for an adult man, adult
woman and two sizes for children that can also be adaptedto produce smaller adults.
Various craft pastes edible and non-edible are suitable forthe moulds. A modelling paste suitable for sugarcraft is given
here and many commercial food grade pastes work well.Always wash the moulds when changing crafts.

Before work commences, decide onthe position of the model so the limbsand torso can be arrangedappropriately to dry. Adjust the pasteto required skin tone.
Oil the surface of the mouldlightly with a paintbrush.Avoid solid fat or cornflour as
these may mask the fine detail of themould.
Head and torsoPress a small piece of pastefirmly into the face area of the
mould so that it comes up to the sidesof the mould.
Fill in behind with more pasteto slightly overfill the remainderof the front mould. Also slightly
overfill the back part of the mould thenmoisten both edges and press the twohalves of the mould together.
Press firmly to squeeze outexcess paste then trim awayany surplus.
Hold the bottom of the mouldand the paste firmly andremove the top mould to check
the features are correct.
Carefully remove the seam ofpaste around the figure joinwith a sugarcraft knife.
Gently remove the figure fromthe mould, supporting thehead and neck trim away any
remaining seam before smoothing thejoin with a modelling tool.
Manipulate the figure into thedesired posture beforeinserting a cocktail stick from
the base leaving the bottom end of thestick protruding.
A short wire can be insertedacross the shoulders with endsprotruding slightly to support
the arms. Any facial adjustmentsshould be done at this stage.
The arms Make the arms individually toallow shaping before the paste
sets. Lightly oil the mould and slightlyoverfill the indent, press on the other partof the mould firmly and then remove it.Trim away the seam with particularattention to the hand.
Remove the arm from themould and work on the handwith a small sharp pair of
scissors. If required separate the fingersand mark the nails and joints. If the armis to be bent, remove a ‘V’ shape fromthe elbow and secure the bend withedible glue. Make the second armusing the other indent on the mould.Press each arm onto the wiresprotruding from the torso to createlocation points for the final assembly.Shape the arms then remove them andsupport with foam sponge until dry.

Soak the gelatine in the water untilsoft, then dissolve over hot water orin the microwave (do not allowgelatine to boil). Add the liquidglucose and white fat, stir well andset aside to cool slightly.Sieve the icing sugar with Tylopowder and Gum tragacanth.Make a well in the centre of theicing sugar mix and add thegelatine mixture. Mix to a firmpaste.Turn the paste out onto a board andknead well. If the paste is stickyknead in some cornflour and extraicing sugar, if too dry add a littlewhite fat.Wrap the paste in several layers ofcling film and store in an airtightcontainer. Leave to matureovernight. Re-knead each portionbefore use.

The legsOil the mould and insert ashaped piece to overfill the
space. Press the two halves firmlytogether. Level the base of the feet byremoving any excess paste. Remove thefront half of the leg and trim the seamsas previously described.
If the legs are to stand,strengthen them with wireinserts before removing the legs
from the mould. Make an ‘L’ shapedwire just a little longer than the leg withthe angled piece about half the lengthof the foot. Push this into the leg withthe angle pressed into the base of thefoot.
At this stage press the torso andleg sections together to makeindents that will create the
location points when the whole isassembled. Adjust the waist if requiredand bend the legs to the appropriateshape (note point15 below). Removethe legs and lay them down fortwentyfour hours to dry, propped inposition with scraps of foam sponge.
To bend the legs or create asitting figure, remove a ‘V’shape from the back of the
knee. Also for a sitting figure remove afurther ‘V’ at the top front of the leg
where it joins the body section. Useshort lengths of wire to support bentlegs, a full length of wire may break outof the paste as it is shaped.
To complete the modelFeatures Add ears by applying a small
tear shape piece of paste to the sideseam between the top of the eye andthe bottom of the nose. Flatten theforward edge into the side of the faceand lift the back edge slightly to standaway from the head. Add furtherdetails with a modelling tool and smallamounts of extra paste. Check theseams and smooth with an emeryboard or fill gaps with skin tone royalicing.
FaceApply pale tones gradually andbuild up the detail of the
complexion for a natural effect.Combine white and flesh tone powdercolours to brush onto the face for afoundation (for male models use aslightly darker shade). Add a powderblusher sparingly to cheeks.
Eyes and mouthThe eyes are very important increating the overall impression
on the face. Decide in which directionthe eyes will look. The position of theiris and the amount showing will vary -look at magazine photos forguidelines.

Mark a line across the eye socket wherethe eyelid will be - there will be verylittle showing if the model is lookingstraight ahead but more if the eyes aredowncast. Paint the area below the lidwhite and allow to dry. Mark theposition of the pupil, then with eyecolour paint in the iris. Darken thepupil and with a craft knife lift a tinyspot to make a highlight. Paint very thinpale lines for eyelashes and eyebrows.Paint the lips - not too brightly - withthinned down paste colour.
HairPaint a light coloured line todefine the shape of the hairstyle
around the face. Create the base of thehairstyle by piping with royal icing anda no.2 tube. Add the surface detail witha finer tube and a paintbrush. Hair tostand away from the face can be madewith a paste base then coated withroyal icing.
Assembly and clothingRoll all paste for clothing asfinely as possible. In general a
mixture of four parts sugarpaste to onepart flowerpaste drapes and modelswell, although a higher proportion offlowerpaste should be used whereelements stand away from the body.
When all the body parts are dry theycan be dressed and assembled. Firstdress the lower limbs taking the seamsinto the waist. Dress the torso makingthe seam lines where they wouldnaturally occur and add the torso to thelower body using the location pointsmade earlier. Attach the pieces togetherwith either royal icing or softenedmodelling paste. Dress the arms with aseam allowance curved around the topof the arm to create a neat seam line atthe shoulder. Attach the arms andsupport them in position with foamsponge until secure.
Assemble themodels either singlyor in a group ontoa plaque or cakedrum ensuring thatthe arrangement isstable. Add extraprops or detail tostrengthen andenhance the display
and to make it more secure fortransportation.

The wedding group
The bride’s dress has embroidereddetail added with no.0 tube. Thebridesmaid’s dress fabric was initiallyembossed with the small plungercutter before assembly then the detailpainted onto the garment.
Leaves for the flower arrangementsare made from the daisy/margueriteplunger cutter; the petals are separateand veined with a craft knife. Theroses for the bride and her attendanthave been created from the blossomplunger cutters using a stamen for thecentre.
The clematis flowers at the base of thedisplay are cut from the large plungercutter and the leaves from the middleheart plunger cutter.
