A.S. Watson was founded in 1828 as a small dispensary, with the mission in mind to provide free medical services, to the poor people of the Southern Chinese province of Guangdong (also known as Canton). (proprietorship)This was the first foundation of the A.S. Watson Group. But the A.S. Watson name didn't become prominent with the company until 1862, after Dr. Alexander Skirving Watson joined the company in 1858. (partnership)In 1869 the Hong Kong Dispensary (as the company was known then) was appointed to dispense to the Governor of Hong Kong and the Duke of Edinburgh. 1871 was the year that the company was officially traded under the name A.S. Watson & Company.
Recent Development2008 marked 180 years of A.S. Watson and Watsons launched its loyalty programme in Asia, whilst Watson's Wine celebrated 10 years of serving the wine lovers of Hong Kong. Marionnaud launched its first own brand skin care range and the group took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Tourch Relay. Rossmann celebrated its 2,000th store milestone in 2009, while Watsons opened its 500th store in Mainland China. COOL bottled water was revamped and re-branded to refresh its image.During 2010 Watsons card membership was reaching the 15 million mark.2011 saw DC Ukraine re-branded as Watsons and Watsons China opened its 1000th store, whilst Superdrug launched a new store format in London, directed more at the fast paced fashion market rather than trying to compete with competitors.
Shares SaleTowards the end of 2013 Li Ka-shing appointed three Banks,Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs and HSBC take control of a share sale of the A.S. Watson Group during 2014. After considering the sale of Park'n'Shop, Li Ka-shing decided against it after not receiving an offer that he expected. Instead opting for the floatation of A.S. Watson on the stock market. The group is possibly looking at a dual market floatation,Hong Kong and London. A London listing could value the company as much as $25bn (£15bn), but recent rule changes could make a London listing a difficult process for Huchison Whampoa. (LLC with share)
