Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple

Apple’s Board of Directors announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive

Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer,

as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will

join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as

the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson,

Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board. “Steve has made countless

contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely

creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the

Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and

inspiration.”

JCPenney Pulls T-Shirt Celebrating Girls 'Too Pretty to Do Homework'

JCPenney is madly backtracking and apologizing on Facebook for selling a

T-shirt that reads, "I'm too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it

for me.” The implication that being smart isn't cool, while clearly meant

as a joke, obviously won't fly in this day and age - and the retailer has

pulled the shirt from its online and Facebook stores. (Promotional copy for

the item on the website fanned the flames. It read: "Who has time for

homework when there's a new Justin Bieber album out? She'll love this tee

that's just as cute and sassy as she is.")

JCP is now in full damage control, although the Facebook apologies, copy-

and-pasted to many different commenters, could stand to be a little less

peppy.

"Hi Amanda: We hear you loud and clear!" reads one. "We want to apologize

for any concern we may have caused. Because of the feedback from our

loyal fans and customers such as yourself, our buyers will be pulling this

shirt from our inventory. Thank you again for taking the time to share your

concerns. Have a great day!" Something tells me this whole thing made

Amanda's day a little less "great!"

HP to drop WebOS devices completely, may sell off PC unitIn a complete 180 turn, HP will be discontinuing all production and hardware support for

their webOS-based devices, including the Pre smartphone series and TouchPad tablet. Its

Personal System Group (PSG), which is responsible for developing PCs, could be sinking as

well.

Unfortunately, consumers simply do not care about the webOS platform, to put it lightly. The

Pre 3 smartphone was never released outside of Europe and the TouchPad had lukewarm

reviews when it was launched just a number of weeks ago in July. Rumors earlier in the week

pointed out that only 25,000 TouchPad units have been sold in Best Buy stores out of a stock

of 270,000 in the United States. Instead of mending the problems, HP has now decided to

abandon the sinking ship altogether.

As for the PC side, HP is considering a “full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a

spin-off or other transaction.” While HP did not explicitly state the reasons for such a move in

the press release, DailyTech predicts that HP is simply not making enough money in the PC

hardware business.

ARM Could Breathe New Life Into Laptops

A stagnant laptop market could be reinvigorated with the arrival of ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) processors, which will enable

lighter machines with all-day battery life, industry observers said.

Most laptops today use x86 processors from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. But chips with ARM processors are smaller

and more power-efficient than X86 microprocessors, which should help laptop makers build tablet-like laptops with

touchscreens, analysts said. At the same time, however, ARM will face challenges trying to crack into a market where users

prize performance.

ARM is the first architecture with a good chance of breaking x86's stranglehold over PCs, analysts said. ARM processors will

be used in nearly a quarter of all PCs shipped worldwide by 2015, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. IDC predicts

a more modest 15 percent share by 2015.

ARM processors dominate in tablets and smartphones, but the arrival of Windows 8 on ARM will fuel interest for ARM for

laptops, said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst at IHS iSuppli. Windows 8 will be available both on X86 and ARM processors,

whereas the most recent Windows versions have only been available for X86.

"New products will always attract attention. If ARM-based laptops can attract users from the [tablet], it might reinvigorate

interest in the PC market," Wilkins said.

ARM licenses processor designs to chip makers, and its latest Cortex-A15 processors are scheduled to appear in smartphones

and tablets next year. Texas Instruments, Nvidia and Qualcomm have expressed interest in building ARM-based chips

for laptops. No top PC maker has announced an ARM laptop yet.

Apple declares war on Adobe

In the past, Apple has publicly derided Flash and suggested that the platform is in decline. iOS has not supported

Flash since its inception, so it’s not surprising that Lion — which pushes the Mac OS closer to iOS — offers less

support for Adobe.

It’s also possible that Adobe simply hasn’t caught its products up to speed with the changes in the Lion OS yet.

Anytime a new OS is released, software developers have access to beta versions of the OS to get their software in

order, and Adobe is no different. Still, the sheer amount of issues related to Adobe’s products, the history of the two

companies, and the fact that many users will be affected makes this significant.

Just a few years ago, Apple and Adobe had a close relationship. So close, in fact, that it would be unheard of for a

new version of the Mac OS to break a feature in Photoshop, one of the most popular Adobe products.

On top of hardware acceleration issues, Adobe listed other Lion-specific problems with Acrobat,

Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Flash Catalyst, Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premiere

Pro.

In some cases, older programs do not work at all. Adobe lists non-current versions of Flash Builder and Flash

Catalyst as programs that “will not work on Mac OS X 10.7.” Abobe said it “does not intend to update” these

products. That could definitely cause developers trouble if they upgrade to Lion while still using older versions of

these programs.
