Additional $40000 in Donations for Cantrell Creek

Initiated by Pisgah and Land O Sky TU the project to restore and reconnectCantrell Creek continues to receive support from our many area partners inconservation and theres more good news to tell you about The Transylvania County Tourism Development Authority (TCTDA) and REIOutdoors recently announced a $20000 contribution EACH to the eorts torelocate the trail and restore Cantrell Creek

The following text is excerpted from a draft press release by The Pisgah Conservancy

ldquoThe addition of $20000 grants from both the TCTDA and REI to the fundsalready raised by Trout Unlimited and others provided a huge boost to theprojectrdquo said John Cottingham Executive Director of The Pisgah Conservancy So far the various partners have pledged over $80000 most of which will go to aprofessional trail building company that will be responsible for relocating the trailutilizing trail and stream restoration techniques managing storm water fellingtimber installing check dams and transplanting native plants Their tasks are complicated by the remote location of the trail ldquoWhether the work is done by hand or machine itrsquos much more costly than doingthe same work right on the side of the roadrdquo said Dave Casey district ranger forthe Pisgah Ranger District ldquoItrsquos also not just about getting from point A to point Bndash how you get there also matters Thatrsquos a big part of what we value about ourtrails the character of them and how they move you through the forestrdquo Despite the challenges Casey is excited about the project ldquoItrsquos always great to have support from a wide range of user groupsrdquo said CaseyldquoBut this is going beyond support ndash this is real buy-inrdquo ldquoOne of the reasons wersquore so excited about this project is its collaborative naturerdquosaid TCTDA chair Grant Bullard ldquoSharing resources is a great way to achieve trulymeaningful results This project would not have been possible without thecommitment of many groups We look forward to being a partner in many moresuch worthy projects ndash and to help recruit other willing partnersrdquo

Having publicly announced its interest in undertaking the project and invitingpublic comment the United States Forest Service is currently engaged in theregulatory review process to obtain NEPA approval The National EnvironmentalPolicy Act (NEPA) dictates the archeological and botanical review and approvalprocess required for a project of this kind on federal land

ldquoThis process will likely take several monthsrdquo said Cottingham ldquoOnce completewersquoll then select and contract with a trail builder and move into theimplementation phase Our goal is to complete the project in 2018rdquo

Looking Ahead

Once the Cantrell Creek Project is nished the improvements will benetpractically every user group in the forest sherman hikers mountain bikers andhorseback riders Additionally decreased sedimentation will increase the waterquality of Cantrell Creek and the North Mills River watershed and improve thehabitat for insects brook trout and the Eastern Hellbender

As abundant as these benets are they might be just the beginning of somethingmuch larger

Some of members our board met informally Thursday night where among severalother things we discussed the current state of our Trout in the Classroom (TIC)program Director Ed Shearin who has led the program so faithfully and capablyfor many years is stepping aside and transitioning his responsibilities to boardmember Kevin Henebry Under Eds leadership our TIC program has grown from 1 to 11 systems all ofwhich were purchased by Pisgah TU and made available to educators at no chargefor classroom use These systems represent a commitment to education by PisgahTU in excess of $10000 with assistance from a Cand Aid grant As of thiswriting we have 9 schools committed to the program for next year

If you are or know a science educator in Polk Henderson or Transylvania countyand would like to participate in the no-cost TIC program wed be interested inhearing from you TIC is a national program of Trout Unlimited so there aresignicant peer support curriculum and classroom resources available provided byeducators from across the country All public and private schools are eligible forthe program For more information contact us here On behalf of all of Pisgah TU wed like to express our appreciation to Ed Shearinfor his outstanding service to the chapter our education mission and - most

Trout in the Classroom

Some of members our board met informally Thursday night where among severalother things we discussed the current state of our Trout in the Classroom (TIC)program Director Ed Shearin who has led the program so faithfully and capablyfor many years is stepping aside and transitioning his responsibilities to boardmember Kevin Henebry Under Eds leadership our TIC program has grown from 1 to 11 systems all ofwhich were purchased by Pisgah TU and made available to educators at no chargefor classroom use These systems represent a commitment to education by PisgahTU in excess of $10000 with assistance from a Cand Aid grant As of thiswriting we have 9 schools committed to the program for next year

If you are or know a science educator in Polk Henderson or Transylvania countyand would like to participate in the no-cost TIC program wed be interested inhearing from you TIC is a national program of Trout Unlimited so there aresignicant peer support curriculum and classroom resources available provided byeducators from across the country All public and private schools are eligible forthe program For more information contact us here On behalf of all of Pisgah TU wed like to express our appreciation to Ed Shearinfor his outstanding service to the chapter our education mission and - most
