FIRE DEPARTMENT FACTS

Staffing is tied for the LOWEST in the nation when compared to similar sized cities

Nationally 8th HIGHEST in emergency calls for service while being the 10th LOWEST in spending per citizen

PASSAGE OF THE LEVY will maintain staffing levels allowing the minimum standard of 4 firefighters on the scene of city structure fires 98% of the time verses 60% before SAFER grant

PASSAGE OF THE LEVY ensures more Firefighters and Paramedics on a daily basis to keep our neighborhoods safe while reducing overtime costs by 47%

How Does the SAFER Grant Impact Safety?

Prior to the SAFER funding:19 fire responses where fewer than four Firefighters were available

11 incidents involved two firefighters

3 incidents where no units were available to respond

Passage of the Levy PREVENTS THIS from

happening AGAIN

POLICE DEPARTMENT FACTS

Staffing is comparable to smaller communities Piqua Police Sworn Officers = 29; Troy Police Sworn

Officers = 38 IT’S NOT A FOOTBALL SCORE

Spends $10 less per citizen than the national average Despite continued low staffing levels, the PROTECT program

has been implemented to make schools much safer places.  PROTECT is a true community partnership that needs to be expanded into workplaces and faith-based organizations

The PROTECT program is labor intensive. Passage of the levy will help accommodate budget space to continue and improve the program.

If the Levy passes, will Police do “Neighborhood Policing” and be more visible on the streets and in neighborhoods?

Increasing the number of Police Officers makes them more visible and makes people feel safer. PASSAGE of the LEVY will expand the PROTECT Piqua Program. Another SAFETY project is the “Intelligence Led, Victim Driven” philosophy. When Intelligence sources predict a crime in a specific neighborhood, PASSAGE of the LEVY would provide more time to work with residents of that neighborhood on notification and prevention.

INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Why are the citizens of Piqua being asked to increase the city income tax?

A: Purely for the SAFETY of the community and our families. The additional personnel allows for an interior attack/victim rescue and quicker fire and emergency responses; and to fight and deter the growing crime incidents.

Q: Who will and will not be paying this additional income tax?

A: City income tax is NOT collected on income from social security, pensions, unemployment benefits, military pay, public assistance, or alimony received. In addition, interest, dividends, and capital gains are NOT taxed.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: What will this increase cost a citizen working or living in Piqua?

A: The median household income for Piqua, according to the 2012 Census Bureau is $39,000 which means the PASSAGE OF THE LEVY will cost the average household $0.27 cents a day.
