GASCO

Formed 1997 to take control of gas transmission

Over 3000km of pipelines

Pipelines mainly buried

Health and safety responsibility

Issues from a Consultancy perspective

Control network?

Co-ordinate system?

Mapping?

Inspection PIG?

GIS?

GASCO geomatics knowledge?

GASCO survey equipment?

Page 11: Pipeline Mapping in Egypt

Issues from a personal perspective

I spoke little Arabic

I didn’t know anything about PIGS!

My knowledge of satellite imagery was limited

My knowledge of GIS integration was extremely rusty

Could I make changes to the specification?

Practical implicationsINS drift of 0.005 degrees per hour

First magloggers positioned on the ground every 1km

Position; Time; Wrong point; Not turned on/Battery ran out

GASCO specification was for a positional accuracy of any asset to 1m

PIG travels at 3.2metres per second……..

GASCO summary

‘To use the latest global technologies in the construction, the latest global technologies in the construction, management and maintenance of gas grid pipelines, management and maintenance of gas grid pipelines,

utilities and facilities in both economical and safe utilities and facilities in both economical and safe means’means’

So why did GASCO use this technology?

There is always a risk in using new technologies.

Pipeline Mapping In Egypt

Overview of the project

The Inspection PIG

Reflections

Page 32: Pipeline Mapping in Egypt

Reflections (1)

+ survey 140km in a day

- requires a first order control network based on WGS84

The Inspection Pig has strengths and weaknesses -

+ integrates defects and assets with position

- does not give depth below the ground

- does not survey assets away from the pipe

+ ideal for unmapped pipes in difficult terrain

Page 33: Pipeline Mapping in Egypt

Reflections (2)

What has this experience told me about Geomatics training?

Geodesy is still critical

An ability to differentiate between Geomatic softwares

….but there are other important criteria

An understanding of different types and uses of mapping

Data quality – know how to analyse

Page 34: Pipeline Mapping in Egypt

Reflections (3)There is more to being a consultant than technical knowledge…….

Pro-active – collaborate with the stakeholders

Patience – expect the unexpected

Communication – confirm and confirm again

Organisational Politics

Intuition – use it

Selling

Page 35: Pipeline Mapping in Egypt

and finally…

Working overseas can be fun

Do take the risk

It’s the quality and range of experience that’s important, not just the money
