MetersPraxair’s Pipeline Business Center usesmodern flow computer technology aspart of our commitment to reliable customersupply. Pressure and temperature compen-sated field mounted computers calculateflow on a real-time basis and record / reportthis data to the Business Center. Data retrieval in the event of a loss of telemetrybetween the remote operations is madepossible due to these advanced devices.These devices are backed up with batterypower and include remote telemetrymonitors. The pipeline operations grouproutinely checks the status of all equip-ment. Calibration is performed annuallyor as requested by customers.

Control Room BackupPraxair’s Pipeline Business Center’s primarycontrol room is located in The Woodlands,TX. This site is backed up with uninter-ruptible power in the form of batteries andnatural gas generators. This same setupis replicated in the backup location inWillis, TX. Praxair has invested in a threetiered network supply from the South anda redundant supply from the North. Theredundant data pathways are independentfrom point to point.

Our staff is trained tooffer you consistently high quality service andto help ensure the safety and reliable deliveryof our pipelines.

PipelineThe Pipeline Business Center adheres to theControl Room Management regulations pre-scribed by the Department of Transportation’sPipeline Hazardous Material Safety Adminis-tration (PHMSA). These regulations focus onfatigue mitigation, alarm rationalization andcontrol, as well as workload analysis. Industryreview of pipeline incidents repeatedly demon-strates that human error is a major contributingfactor to preventable incidents and injuries.We train our managers to responsibly applythese regulations to help ensure the safetyand control of our pipelines.

National ResponsibilitiesPraxair’s Pipeline Business Center manages38 production sites, 131 customers, and over575 miles of pipeline in six states, includingsix hydrogen pipelines, two oxygen pipelinesand two nitrogen pipelines. Our productionassets include 21 hydrogen production plants,one third party hydrogen source, five com-petitive hydrogen cross-ties, one high purityhydrogen storage cavern, nine air separationplants, five competitive oxygen and nitrogencross-ties and numerous booster and valvestations.

Supply and BackupOur instantaneous oxygen, nitrogen andhydrogen supply capabilities are best in class.The oxygen and nitrogen backup systemsare capable of replacing the product deliveredthrough our pipelines at any moment, and thehydrogen backup can replace the productionof our largest plant for up to 15 days ofdowntime!

High Purity Hydrogen Storage Cavern Praxair’s Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline sys-tem is supported by our high purity hydrogenstorage cavern. This storage cavern is a so-lution-mined salt cavern located approximatelyhalfway along the 270 mile Gulf Coast hydro-gen pipeline. It is capable of storing 2.5 billioncubic feet of high purity hydrogen up to2,200 psig.
