                                                     Chapter 1 Louisiana purchase   

Have  you ever heard of the Louisiana purchase ? In 1803 the Louisiana territory was owned by emperor Bonaparte in France.President  Thomas Jefferson purchased it for $15 million . The Louisiana purchase doubled the size of the us.  

With new land purchased and unexplored.Thomas Jefferson then sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore.Thomas jefferson's instructions to Lewis and Clark to find a water source to the pacific ocean and to keep information about land ,plants,and animals in a journal.They left to explore on may 14,1804.They brought food,knives,muskets and other supplies.Lewis even brought his dog Seaman.Along their journey they met native americans and traded with them to make peace.They asked a french trader named Cheromiah and his native american wife Sacagawea to help them on their journey.Sacagawea helped them cross the rockies.In November 1805 they reached the pacific.In 1806 they completed their two year long journey and returned to St.Louis.    

After Lewis and Clark returned to St.Louis people started moving west.Some trails started by following native american trails.some people started moving west in the spring because it is harder in the winter.Over 300,000 people traveled on the Oregon trail during the westward expansion.The oregon trail is 2,000 miles long.The santa fe trail is 800 miles long.Many people had a hard time saying good bye like Lavinia Honeyman Porter”I never that sad parting from my dear sister on the prairie of kansas without the tears flowing fast and free”   

          

  Chapter 2  

                                               what was pioneer life like?                             22 million people moved west.When pioneers got to their destination they had few resources.They had almost every meal made out of corn.Their houses were crowded and dirty. there weren't a lot of trees in the prairie.So you wuold be lucky to have wooden house.Some pioneers made their houses out of sod.Sod is made out of dirt and and grass even the roof was made of sod.If it rained muddy water would leak through your roof.Pioneers cut sod to make bricks. 

                                what hardships did they face?    

The pioneers faced many problems along the way and when they settled and along the way and when they settled.The prairie blizzards were very dangerous you would have to take cover immediately!They got water from rivers or make a well.Making wells were very dangerous the dirt could collapse on you or there could be dangerous gasses at the bottom.Prairie fires were a problem to pioneers would not give up until the fire was out they would fight the fire even if it lasted all night.they would use a rag or broom and beat the fire with it until it was out.Grasshoppers would eat your crops and if you killed them they would keep coming.But the pioneers helped us make towns and cities in the future.                 

                                                  Chapter 3  

The homestead act was signed by president Abraham Lincoln so people could move west and get free land because Lewis and Clark explored the louisiana territory then pioneers traveling west.When the pioneers settled in the west the native americans lost their homes and forced to move away.Westward expansion gave the us two more states.westward expansion made us one of the biggest countries in the world.
