Introduction to ho me th eaterYou are probably used to using stereo equipm ent to l isten to mu sic, but m ay not be used to home

theater systems that g ive you many m ore options (such as surround soun d) when l istening to

    soundtracks.

Hom e theater refers to the use of mu ltiple audio tracks to create a surround sound effect, making

you feel l ike you're in th e midd le of the action or c oncert. The surroun d sound you get from a hom etheater system depends not only on th e speakers you have set up in your room, but also on the

source and the sound settings of the receiver.

DVD-Video has becom e the basic sourc e m aterial for hom e theater due to i ts size, quality, and ease

of use. Depending on the DVD, you can h ave up to seven different audio tracks com ing from one

disc, al l of them being sent to different speakers in your system. This is what creates a surround

sound effect an d gives you th e feeling of being there.

This receiver will automatically decode Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Surround DVD-Video discs,

according t o your speaker setup. In m ost cases, you wont have to make changes for realistic

surround sound, but oth er possibi l ities (like l istening to a CD with m ulti-channel surround soun d)

are explained in Playing sources, starting on page 32.

you hook up using an optical cable, you should refer to Optica l d ig i ta l input s ett ingon page 43 to

assign the optical input to DVD.

Use a video cord to connect the video output on your DVD to th e receiver using th e jacks shown

    below.

    Connecting up03

    14En

Connecting digital com ponentsThe easiest way to h ook up th is receiver for surroun d sound is to use a digital input. You can do this

by either coaxial or optical c onnections (you do n ot need to d o both). The quality of these two types

of connections is the sam e but since som e digital component s only have one type of digital

terminal, i t is a matt er of match ing l ike with l ike (for example, the coaxial output from the

com ponent to coaxial input on th e receiver). The VSX-D711 has three digital inpu ts on t he rear panel

(two coaxial inputs and a optical inpu t) and th e VSX-D811S has four (two coaxial inputs and twooptical inputs). Connect your digital com ponents to th e rear panel as shown below. See page 18 to

connect the front panel optical input on th e VSX-D811S.

There is one digital output jack wh ich is m arked DIGITAL OUT. If you conn ect this to th e optical

input on a digital recorder (currently these include M D, DAT and CD-R) you can m ake direct digital

    recordings with this unit.

When con necting your equipm ent, always make sure the power is turned off and the power cord is

    disconnected from the AC outlet.

Hints on speaker placementSpeakers are usually designed with a particular placem ent in m ind. Some are designed to be

floorstanding, while others should be placed on stands to sound th eir best. Some should be placed

near a wall; others should be placed away from walls. We have provided a few tips on getting the

best sound from your speakers (below), but you should also fol low the gu idelines on placement th at

the speaker manufactu rer provided with your particular speakers to get the most out of them .

M ake sure that al l the bare speaker wire is twisted together and inserted ful ly into the speaker

termin al. If any of the bare speaker wire touches the back pan el i t m ay cause the power to cut off as

a safety measure. Use good quality speaker wire to connect the speakers to the receiver.

When using t he speaker on your TV as the center speaker (C), connect the CENTER PREOUT

jack on th is un it to th e aud io in pu t jack o n you r TV. In th is case t he center sp eak er sh ow n is

    unnecessary.

If you are using only one surround back speaker, connect th e positive wire to the right chann el

(+) terminal, and t he negative wire to the left channel () termin al (see i llustration on page 11). If you select sub woofer (SB SUBWF) in the Surroun d back speaker sett ing(see page 39) you c an

hook up a su bwoofer instead of speakers to the sur round b ack speaker term inals. Connect th e

positive wire to the right chann el (+) terminal, and t he negative wire to the left channel ()

termin al (see i l lustration on page 11).

A and B speaker systemsThe receiver has two speaker systems: A and B. A is th e main system supporting the ful l speaker

setup. If you switch on both A and B speaker systems, only the front speakers and the subwoofer

wil l be audible. No sound w il l come from the center, surround, or surroun d back speakers, but

mu lti-chann el sources wil l be down -mixed to the active speakers so no sound w il l be lost. Similarly,

i f you choose just the B system you l l only hear the front speakers connected to th e B system and

mu lti chann el sources wil l be down-mixed to these two speakers.

Place the front left and right speakers at equal distances from the TV.

When placing speakers near the TV, we recom m end using magn etically shielded speakers to

prevent p ossible interference, such as discoloration of the p icture wh en the TV is switched on. If

you do not have magnetically shielded speakers and notic e discoloration of the TV picture, m ove

the speakers farth er away from th e TV.

1 Twist exposed wire strands together.

2 Loosen speaker terminal and insert exposed wire.

    3 Tighten terminal.

    Speaker terminals3/8 in. (10mm)

    The speaker terminals also

    accept single banana

    plug s. (Refer to speaker

    m anual for detai ls.)

Crossover frequency setting Default setting: 100 Hz

Crossover frequency is th e point wh ere the
