Introduction to ho me th eaterYou are probably used to using stereo equipm ent to l isten to mu sic, but m ay not be used to home
theater systems that g ive you many m ore options (such as surround soun d) when l istening to
soundtracks.
Hom e theater refers to the use of mu ltiple audio tracks to create a surround sound effect, making
you feel l ike you're in th e midd le of the action or c oncert. The surroun d sound you get from a hom etheater system depends not only on th e speakers you have set up in your room, but also on the
source and the sound settings of the receiver.
DVD-Video has becom e the basic sourc e m aterial for hom e theater due to i ts size, quality, and ease
of use. Depending on the DVD, you can h ave up to seven different audio tracks com ing from one
disc, al l of them being sent to different speakers in your system. This is what creates a surround
sound effect an d gives you th e feeling of being there.
This receiver will automatically decode Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Surround DVD-Video discs,
according t o your speaker setup. In m ost cases, you wont have to make changes for realistic
surround sound, but oth er possibi l ities (like l istening to a CD with m ulti-channel surround soun d)
are explained in Playing sources, starting on page 32.

Connecting digital com ponentsThe easiest way to h ook up th is receiver for surroun d sound is to use a digital input. You can do this
by either coaxial or optical c onnections (you do n ot need to d o both). The quality of these two types
of connections is the sam e but since som e digital component s only have one type of digital
terminal, i t is a matt er of match ing l ike with l ike (for example, the coaxial output from the
com ponent to coaxial input on th e receiver). The VSX-D711 has three digital inpu ts on t he rear panel
(two coaxial inputs and a optical inpu t) and th e VSX-D811S has four (two coaxial inputs and twooptical inputs). Connect your digital com ponents to th e rear panel as shown below. See page 18 to
connect the front panel optical input on th e VSX-D811S.
There is one digital output jack wh ich is m arked DIGITAL OUT. If you conn ect this to th e optical
input on a digital recorder (currently these include M D, DAT and CD-R) you can m ake direct digital
recordings with this unit.
When con necting your equipm ent, always make sure the power is turned off and the power cord is
disconnected from the AC outlet.

If you have an LD player, you need to make special connections to ensure you can play 2RF
format LDs on your system. If th is is the case, hook up your DVD or LD player directly to an RF
demodulator using both the2RF output and either a c oaxial or optical digital conn ection. We
also recomm end hooking up your digital com ponents to analog audio jacks as well. Make sure
the RF demodulator digital in switc h is set correctly (optical or coaxial depending on the
connection). See the com ponent's instruct ion man ual i f you are unsure about i ts input and

Hints on speaker placementSpeakers are usually designed with a particular placem ent in m ind. Some are designed to be
floorstanding, while others should be placed on stands to sound th eir best. Some should be placed
near a wall; others should be placed away from walls. We have provided a few tips on getting the
best sound from your speakers (below), but you should also fol low the gu idelines on placement th at
the speaker manufactu rer provided with your particular speakers to get the most out of them .
M ake sure that al l the bare speaker wire is twisted together and inserted ful ly into the speaker
termin al. If any of the bare speaker wire touches the back pan el i t m ay cause the power to cut off as
a safety measure. Use good quality speaker wire to connect the speakers to the receiver.
When using t he speaker on your TV as the center speaker (C), connect the CENTER PREOUT
jack on th is un it to th e aud io in pu t jack o n you r TV. In th is case t he center sp eak er sh ow n is
unnecessary.
If you are using only one surround back speaker, connect th e positive wire to the right chann el
(+) terminal, and t he negative wire to the left channel () termin al (see i llustration on page 11). If you select sub woofer (SB SUBWF) in the Surroun d back speaker sett ing(see page 39) you c an
hook up a su bwoofer instead of speakers to the sur round b ack speaker term inals. Connect th e
positive wire to the right chann el (+) terminal, and t he negative wire to the left channel ()
termin al (see i l lustration on page 11).
A and B speaker systemsThe receiver has two speaker systems: A and B. A is th e main system supporting the ful l speaker
setup. If you switch on both A and B speaker systems, only the front speakers and the subwoofer
wil l be audible. No sound w il l come from the center, surround, or surroun d back speakers, but
mu lti-chann el sources wil l be down -mixed to the active speakers so no sound w il l be lost. Similarly,
i f you choose just the B system you l l only hear the front speakers connected to th e B system and
mu lti chann el sources wil l be down-mixed to these two speakers.
Place the front left and right speakers at equal distances from the TV.
When placing speakers near the TV, we recom m end using magn etically shielded speakers to
prevent p ossible interference, such as discoloration of the p icture wh en the TV is switched on. If
you do not have magnetically shielded speakers and notic e discoloration of the TV picture, m ove
the speakers farth er away from th e TV.
1 Twist exposed wire strands together.
2 Loosen speaker terminal and insert exposed wire.
3 Tighten terminal.
Speaker terminals3/8 in. (10mm)
The speaker terminals also
accept single banana
plug s. (Refer to speaker
m anual for detai ls.)

If you choose to instal l th e center speakeron top of t he TV, be sure to secu re it with

Introduction t o Sound ModesThere are three basic sound options: Stereo/
Direct, Standard or Advanced Surround.
Stereo/Direct
When you select STEREOor DIRECT, you willhear the source through just th e front left and
right speakers (and possibly your su bwoofer
depending on your speaker settings). Dolby
Digital and DTS m ultichann el sources are
downm ixed to stereo.
In STEREO, youl l hear the audio w ith your
surround settings an d you can sti l l use the
Midn ight, Loudness, and Tone control fun c-
tions.
With DIRECT, you will bypass all effects and
surround settings so that the audio remains as
close to the sourc e audio signal as possible.
If you switch on M idnight l istening, Loud-
ness, or the Tone con trols wh en DIRECT is
selected, the receiver autom atically
switches to STEREO.
Standard modeThe standard m ode can be used to decode
Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Surround sources.
The other surroun d sound options (next
column) can add mu l t i -channel sound to
regular stereo sources.
You can id entif y Dolby Digital softw are by the
1or m arks. Most Dolby
Surround software is marked3, but
unm arked software may also incorporate Dolby
Surround. Depending on t he source, the 6.1
channel sett ing(page 40), and the sound m ode
you have selected, you m ay not get soun d from
the surroun d back speakers in your setup. For
more on this, refer to the table on the n ext page.
Choose one of the fol lowing to add depth t o a 2
channel source:
Pro LogicThis m ode gives 4.1 channel surroun d sound . It
is less sensitive to the quality of the source
m aterial, so may be useful when Pro Logic IIMovie/ Mu sic m odes dont give good results.
Pro Logic II MovieThis m ode gives 5.1 channel surroun d sound . It
is suitable for movies, especially those recorded
in Dolby Surround. The channel separation and
m ovem ent of surround effects is comparable to
Dolby Digital 5.1.
Pro Logic II MusicThis m ode gives 5.1 channel surround sound
and is suitable for m usic. The surroun d effect is
m ore enveloping th an Pro Logic II M ovie.
Neo:6 Cinem a (VSX-D811S only)This m ode gives 6.1 channel surround sound
and is suitable for movies. The Neo:6 Cinema
m ode delivers good chan nel separation for
m ovie soundtracks.
Neo:6 Music (VSX-D811S only)This m ode gives 6.1 channel surround sound
and is suitable for m usic. The Neo:6 Music
m ode plays the stereo source as is through the
front left/right speakers, and generates a
natural, ambient surround and center sound.

Advanced Surround mo desThese are designed to be used w ith m ulti-
chann el surround sound audio/visual sources
(l ike DVDs and LDs). Most Advanced Surroun d
m odes are designed to be used with fi lm
soundtracks, but som e modes are also suited
for m usic sourc es. Try different settings with
various sound tracks to see which you l ike.
Depending on th e source, the 6.1 channel
se t t i ng (page 40), and the soun d m ode you have
selected, you m ay not get sound from the
surround back speakers in your setup. For m ore
on th is, refer to the table below.
MovieSimulates the relaxed environment of a m ovie
theater, and is suitable for watching m ovies.
MusicSimulates the acoustic environm ent of a large
concert hall and is suitable for music or
musical sources.
Virtual Surround Back (VIRTL SB)The Virtual Surround Back effect sim ulates 7.1
surround c hannel l istening, giving the imp res-
sion that there are two surroun d back speakers
in your system when l istening to a 5.1 channel
source.
ExpandedThis mode is especially designed to give sound
depth to stereo sources, and lets you hear two-
chann el (stereo) signals as simulated m ulti-
chann el surround sound. Use with Dolby Pro
Logic for a stereo surr oun d effect. You can also
use with D olby Digital sources for a wider
stereo field than th e Standard modes.
5-Channel Stereo (VSX-D711)This can be selected to give multi-channel
sound to a stereo source, using al l of the
speakers in your setup.
6-Channel Stereo (VSX-D811S)This can be selected to give multi-channel

to Dolb y Digital or DTS-ES decoding for 6.1
encoded sources (6.1 AUTO), or you can
choose to l isten to other kinds of sour ces (for
example, 5.1 encoded m aterial) with 6.1
encoding (6.1 FIX). With 5.1 encoded sources, a
surround b ack chann el wil l be generated, but
the m aterial may sound better in the 5.1 form at
for which it was originally encoded.
Useorto select 6.1 FIX or 6.1AUTO.
If you chose SB in Surround back speaker
setting (above), you can t set th e 6.1

Crossover frequency setting Default setting: 100 Hz
Crossover frequency is th e point wh ere the
receiver divides the high and low soun ds (the
frequencies) between the speakers. Since most
smaller speakers can t handle deep bass tones,
you can send th ese sounds t o the subwoofer (or
if you don t have a subwoo fer, the large (L)
speakers in your system) in stead of the
speakers set to sm all (S) in your setup. Choose
the point at which you want th e frequency
routed to the subwoofer (or Lspeakers).
We recomm end setting this to 200 Hz if your S
speakers are smaller bookshelf-type speakers.
Useorto specify the crossoverfrequency for your small speakers (100 Hz,
150 Hz or 200 Hz).
100Hz 150Hz
200Hz

Center speaker distance setting Default setting: 10 ft.
The center speaker is norm ally placed directly
in the front of the l istening room and c loser to
the l istening position than th e front speakers.
This m eans that the sound from th e center
speaker wil l be heard b efore the front speakers. To prevent this, set the cen ter speaker distan ce
setting to delay the sound from the center
speaker so that the sound from t he front and
center speakers wil l be heard at the same tim e.
Useorto set the distance of thecenter speaker from the main listeningposition (within a 30 foot range).
When C is selected in the speaker setting,

With this setting, you can compress the
dynamic ran ge, so that low level sounds can be
heard more easily (sounding relatively louder)
yet louder sounds won t be too overbearing.
Pressorto set the dynamic rangecontrol (OFF, MAX, or MID).
