PIONEER SQUARE EAST WEST PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS The City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront & Civic Projects, working with community partner Alliance for Pioneer Square, has begun a project to improve the pedestrian environment on four east-west streets in the heart of Pioneer Square. This project will design and construct improvements on portions of Main, Washington, King and Yesler streets between 2nd Avenue and Alaskan Way. This project will connect historic Pioneer Square to the new 20-acre waterfront park, improve accessibility for people of all ages and abilities, and improve the pedestrian experience. The project will help strengthen the renewal of public spaces such as Occidental Park, and support the economic vitality and culture of the district as a whole. Pioneer Square’s pedestrians will be better connected to Alaskan Way and the new waterfront park Improvements will provide safe, convenient, graceful pedestrian connections and foster positive city life

PIONEER SQUARE EAST WEST PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS

The City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront & Civic Projects, working with community partner Alliance for Pioneer Square, has begun a project to improve the pedestrian environment on four east-west streets in the heart of Pioneer Square.

Pioneer Square’s pedestrians will be better connected to Alaskan Way and the new waterfront park

Improvements will provide safe, convenient, graceful pedestrian connections and foster positive city life

Project timeline and budgetThe project kicked off in December 2018, with an initial concept design anticipated in June 2019. Construction is expected to begin in September 2021, following opening of the new Alaskan Way, and be completed by fall 2022. There is a total of $20M in funding for this effort as part of the City’s Waterfront Seattle Program.

Community engagementWe are working closely with a community sounding board including residents, community leaders, property owners, business owners and others who are helping to shape the concept design. In April 2019, we hosted a public open house to show the concept design and get feedback on early ideas for improving these streets. Briefings and meetings with neighborhood organizations, key community stakeholders and the Pioneer Square Preservation Board are also underway.
