Ever since Trinity completed the reaccreditation process in 2010, we have been haunted by one question: “What’s next?” Through that reaccreditation, we were reminded that Trinity is much more than preparation for college and that our sense of mission, while

strong, still paled in comparison to what is possible. While examining that mission and dreaming of even greater possibilities for our school, we were confronted and somewhat confined by our attempts to put our story into words. Telling the Trinity story is not easy. It’s always easier and, at some level, more understand-able for us to talk about those facts and qualities that are measurable, but it seems that we all struggle to find the words that really convey what Trinity is all about. Our story is one of people, individually and together, who believe in something. We

believe that a life worth living has to be anchored in faith. We believe academics are more than a means simply to “get ahead” by gathering wealth for its own sake. We believe we are all meant to lead with the conviction of our beliefs and a sense of self-identity that is based in character. We believe we are meant to change the world. We believe it begins for us in a little place called Trinity High School. We are Trinity, and we are proud to dream the dreams that will change the world. This publication is part of a new chapter in the life of our school. As it is being posted, our board, faculty, and alumni are launching an extensive network to build the structure that will sustain this school for years to come. This publication—and those that will follow—will support that effort by telling the many stories of an experience that can never be told in numbers—unless those numbers count the beating hearts that hold the dreams of all that is possible. It is important that we go on telling our stories to the public, to our alumni, and to ourselves. By doing so, we remind ourselves of our proud history, our mission, and the possibilities of the future. We will also tell that story to the greater Manchester community and to our alums so that they will know how important it is to share in that future. I invite you to send your stories in to our Communication Office (imapioneer@trinity-hs.org). Tell us what makes Trinity special to you. Tell us what you’re accomplishing in the Trinity spirit. Tell us how you’re changing the world. Connect our school with those who should be considering Trinity for their children. Connect us with alumni who need to know that their alma mater is strong and dedicated to its students and its mission. Encour-age them to look at our website and to learn of a school where faith and dreams come together in service and in a direction for life. Help us tell your story—by doing so, you’ll help tell our story.

Launched as a digital magazine in winter 2012, Pioneer SPIRIT aims to connect parents, families, alumni, community members, and students with the goings-on of Trinity High School and to tell the stories of the broader Trinity community.

Starting this year, the Trinity robotics team, Checkmate 40, will com-pete in only Vex Robotics competitions and not in the FIRST competitions that the team has competed in past years. The team officially said goodbye to FIRST on Oct. 29, when they competed in their final FIRST event called River Rage held at Manchester Memorial High School. Some members of the robotics team are sad to see that the team will not com-

pete in any FIRST robot-ics events this year but are ready to try and go as far as they can with VEX this year. The team’s ultimate goal is to win a VEX world cham-pionship this year. The difference between the two competitions is the size of the robots. VEX robots are built to fit into an 18-by 18-inch box, whereas FIRST robots are much larger in size and can weigh up to 120 pounds. Also, the size of the team is differ-ent; in VEX, Trinity enters 8-10 teams made up of two to three students each; in FIRST, the robotics team as a whole builds one big robot.

It was in the team’s best interest educationally that they switched to VEX. The switch allows those who would not normally be involved in building the big robot to be involved in building a smaller robot that can be molded to level of com- plexity that each team wants the robot to be. It also gives each team of two to three students the ability to think of their own ideas and make what they want. One reason that the team switched to VEX is due to the fact that FIRST costs at least 300 times more money per event. FIRST com-petitions cost $5,000 per

event and VEX events cost between $25 and $350, a big price difference. As of early February, the Trinity robtoics team has already qualified six of its 12 teams for the 2012 VEX Robotics High School World Championships in Anaheim, Calif., in April. Beginning this year, Trinity High School has broadened its technological borders with the introduction of iPads to the Class of 2015. Principal Mr. Mailloux met with the technology committee-made up of Trinity faculty and administrators-last year to dis-cuss ideas on expanding and incorporating technology into the Trinity curriculum. “[We] did a lot of reading on schools and technology, and it was a matter of having technology that would be experienced throughout the curriculum,” said Mr. Mailloux.At first, the administration and faculty were not looking directly at iPads, but through research, the decision eventually came down to iPads or Mac Books. “We could always chase after tech-nology and try to catch up, or go with a system that is designed for education,” Mr. Mailloux said. That system was the iPad. There were a number of things about the iPad that appealed to the technology committee, mainly cost, size and battery life, which is about ten hours. But, as Mr. Mailloux stressed, the applications were a “huge thing” and a major deciding fac-tor. The iPad proved to be the “all around best choice,” he said. Helping to offset the costs for these iPads was a donation made by a Trinity alum, who wishes to remain nameless. The alum donated a sum of money and asked for it to be split three ways, with one of those ways going towards technology. As the principal, Mr. Mailloux got to decide how the funds were spent, and he decided to use them on iPads. As far as he knows, Mr. Mailloux said that Trinity is unique in its use of iPads. “Others have used notebook computers,” he said, but Trinity is the only school he knows of that is using iPads in the curriculum. “For teachers,” Mr. Mailloux said, “[iPads] are a real change in the way they’re dealing with computers, [but] they seem to be loving it.” Note: A longer version of this article was originally published in the October/November 2011 issue of The Pioneer, the news-paper of Trinity High School. Beginning with service opportunities this summer at the Lasallian Youth Conference and two trips to the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia, Campus Ministry’s focus on prayer, service, and community is evident. Prayer: *New this year, we’ve been posting audio recordings of homilies from school liturgies on our website *To remember the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, we placed 3,000 flags on the front lawn of the school *We’ve held weekly morning prayer services for faculty *Seven students attended a vocations dinner with the bishop and seminarians from the diocese *We’ve devoted time to learning the changes to the translation to the Mass.

Service: *We’ve held Thanksgiving basket, canned food, and book drives: Nearly 500 Thanksgiving baskets were collected this year, nearly 400 books were collected for the Henry Wilson school in Manchester, and Trinity students collected more than 1,400 pounds of food to benefit CareGivers, Inc., of Bedford. *We embarked on an ambitious “25 Days of Service” initiative during Advent, offering students, faculty, and staff 25 days of volunteer opportunities.

Community: *A group of students and Mr. Flaherty joined the Pease Greeters in Portsmouth to welcome a group of troops home at 6 a.m on a Sunday morning this fall *Students continue to volunteer at Kid’s Cafe in Manchester once a month *We donated $200 worth of sanitary products to a student who recently went on a mission trip to Haiti *Nearly 100 students, faculty, staff, and parents attended the March for Life pilgrimage in January

March for Life 2012Jan. 22-24, 2012

On Jan. 22, nearly 100 Trinity students, staff, faculty, and parent chaperones gathered at Trinity High School to partake in the annual March for Life pilgrimage. Rev. Richard Dion, pastor of St. Anthony Church in Man-chester, celebrated Mass at Trinity at 5:15, and then the participants boarded two buses bound for Washing-ton, D.C., with a short sightseeing stop in NYC along the way. On Monday, the group, along with thousands of others, attended the Youth Rally and Mass at the Verizon Center and then participated in the March for Life.

Catholic Schools Week provided us the unique opportunity to celebrate the various groups that make up our community: parents, students, faculty and staff. From beginning the week with coffee and donuts during the morning drop-off to celebrating Mass on Wednesday to watching films about the women religious and the La-sallian Volunteers’ bike ride for hunger this summer, our community sought ways to honor, to celebrate, and to share. One highlight of the week was honoring teachers for their years of service to Trinity during our liturgy.

The 2011 Trinity Pioneer football team won the Divi-sion IV state championship this past fall. Coached by Mr. Gary Leonard, athletic director and social studies teacher at Trinity, the Pioneers posted an undefeated record of 9-0 and defeated the Plymouth High School Bobcats, 30-14, in the championship game on Nov. 13. The team won its last state title in 2009, while competing in Division V.

FOOTBALL:Andrew Lauderdale (tight end/defensive end) has been awarded a full scholarship to play football at the University of New Hampshire. Congratulations, Andrew!

All-State Selections: Quarterback Carmen Giampetruzzi; running back Adam Chambers; offen-sive tackle: Colin Bouchard; tight end Andrew Lauderdale; linebackers Mike Leonard, Josh Hughes, Ryan Carrier and Zach Poole. East-West Team Honors:Three Trinity football players have been selected to play in the first annual East–West High School All Star Football Game, which will showcase the most talented football players from New Hampshire. Josh Hughes (running back/linebacker), Andrew Lauderdale (defensive end/tight end) and Mike Leonard (linebacker/special team long snapper/offensive

guard). The game will benefit CHaD, the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth and the Kristen’s Gift fund, a fund for pediatric oncology at CHaD and be played June 23, 2012, at UNH’s Cowell Stadium.

Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game:Senior linebackers Josh Hughes and Mike Leonard have been selected to play in the Shrine game at Dartmouth on Aug. 4, 2012.

On Sept. 23, 2010, Trinity welcomed back Most Rev. Gerald Lacroix, auxiliary bishop of Quebec, as the guest of honor at the 2010 Campus Ministry banquet. The next day, Bishop Lacroix celebrated Mass for the Trinity school community and cheered on the Pioneer football team to a win at Gill Stadium that night in the homecoming game against Plymouth.

On Feb. 22, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named then-Auxiliary Bishop Lacroix Archbishop of Quebec. Bishop Lacroix was formally installed as Archbishop on March 25, 2011, in Quebec City. Teacher Mr. Brian Flaherty (now campus minister), Principal Denis Mailloux, and Terri Greene Henning, communications director, were honored to attend the ceremonies.
