BLOCK WATCH Langley RCMP launched a new Online Crime Reporting tool to assist residents in reporting select non-emergency crimes. This new tool allows frontline personnel to respond to more serious crimes.

Wednesday, May 20, 2020, marked the official launch date of Langley RCMP’s Online Crime Reporting tool. Online Crime Reporting provides an alternate way for citizens to report less serious crimes at bc.rcmp.gc.ca/langley/report .

Superintendent Murray Power, Officer in Charge Langley Detachment, “In an effort to stay current and nimble with regard to community trends, we are striving to improve our service delivery to our communities. The more this option is used, the greater the chance we have of being successful. That, in turn, will allow us to have a positive impact on crime reduction in our communities. With this new option for reporting, even the most minor crimes can be reported. The more use we get from this platform, the more we will learn about making it the best it can be!”

Residents and business owners in Langley, with a valid email address, are able to use the Online Crime Reporting tool to report a crime that meets the following criteria:

• Your report will not require a follow up by a police officer

• You have no witness nor suspect, unless it is a driving complaint

• You have lost something that costs less than $5000

• Someone has stolen something from you that costs less than $5000

• Someone has vandalized your property or vehicle and it will cost less than

$5000 to repair it

• There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals

In addition to providing a more convenient way to make a report, this new tool will also allow call takers and frontline personnel to focus on higher priority calls, which will improve overall safety and response times in the Langleys.

Click the following link to visit the Langley RCMP Online Crime Reporting tool, and is accessible from the detachment website under Report a Crime. Media release May 20, 2020

Red Hats Fling 2020 Well, here we are close to sixty days of isolation and social distancing. The Red Hat Country Classics continue to make the best of a very strange situation. Birthday visits to Priscilla and Irene were a must, complete with singing and balloons. Bonnie is becoming very good at handing over the balloons using a 2 foot ‘grabber’! And what is Easter without an egg hunt? Jayne and Debbie did a fabulous job of impersonating the Easter Bunny as a flurry of Red Hats scoured the Hall Green in pursuit of plastic coloured eggs. Then in a large (social distancing) circle the eggs were cracked open to reveal inspirational messages and a lifesaver. As we took turns reading our messages there were many laughs; the quotes provided serious personal reflections but this fun-loving group of Red Hats were able to bring out the hilarity in each reading which is good for the soul! We ended by crowning two ‘Easter Bonnet’ winners; Bonnie and Priscilla, who excelled in their creativity! What a way to welcome Spring to Pioneer Park! Stay safe and healthy everyone . From the : Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only wors-ened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treat-ment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little

in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death,-by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 5 stepchildren;- I Know My Rights - I Want It Now - Someone Else Is To Blame - I'm A Victim- Pay me for Doing Nothing. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

By the Way… Just a little history. The PIONEER EXPRESS is our Park's little newsletter that has stood the test of time. It's been around since 1983 - same as our Park. It started off as a little typewritten information sheet to keep members up to date as the Park was being built. Over the years it has transitioned from a paper version to our present digital publication. At one point there was an Editorial Committee that was made up of at least one director and a few members-at-large. Then it was decided that it should be completely independent from any Board influence so no director participation nor Park funding was accepted. Peter Woykin was a vital cog in building and maintaining the Express for many years. When he passed away, Carol Handy took the helm for a while to ensure its continuity. Later, Ted McNeil and Len Kucinkas took over editing and publishing of the Express for the past few years. Since then Robert Gillcash jumped in to help with logistics and Marni Nordman developed the digital newsletter from which the paper copy is printed. The digital edition is gaining popularity while a number of members still receive a paper copy as they may not be that conversant with computers. Len and Ted have passed away in the last year leaving the creation, editing, publishing and distribution chores to Robert and Marni. I wish to thank those who have been involved in the continuity of this important organ - both those present and those posthumous. PS: Please support the advertisers that you see in the EXPRESS as they help cover the expenses in its publication. Our MEMORIAL PARK. Initially back in the 80's, this little section was literally a dump. Two former Park members (John Wickham and Fred Lacey) along with a crew of helpers decided it would be nice to have a spot for members to go sit and relax in the shade on a sunny day and be with their own thoughts. Loads of car parts (fenders, batteries, doors, etc.) that had been dumped and buried for years along with the usual assortment of garbage, were dug up, carted away and land cleared. On the west side is a low spot that catches water draining from up the hill and forms a small lake virtually every year. To combat this, a drain pipe was buried along the north side and right angled under Zero Ave. and into the ditch on the south side. This lot was landscaped, shrubs, flowers and trees planted and a pathway built with a few benches to sit on. A crew of volunteers has taken over the chore of maintaining that spot for the enjoyment of any and all members. I hope everyone has an enjoyable summer under these unusual circumstances and in the words of our most capable and compassionate Provincial Health Officer - Dr. Bonnie Henry - "Be kind - be calm - be safe". - Fred Dalkeith #244

(The BY THE WAY column is just a little something to acknowledge contributions by members and to inform new members of things that they might be interested in participating. Remember, those that work together - play together. Great way to get to know your neighbours.)

In Case You were Wondering…

Here you go folks... for those people who don't understand what it means to be on a ventilator but want to take the chance of going back to work....

For starters, it's NOT an oxygen mask put over the mouth while the patient is comfortably lying down and reading magazines. Ventilation for COVID-19 is a painful intubation that goes down your throat and stays there until you live or you die.

It is done under anesthesia for 2 to 3 weeks without moving, often upside down, with a tube inserted from the mouth up to the trachea and allows you to breathe to the rhythm of the lung machine.

The patient can't talk or eat, or do anything naturally - the machine keeps you alive.

The discomfort and pain they feel from this means medical experts have to administer sedatives and painkillers to ensure tube tolerance for as long as the machine is needed. It's like being in an artificial coma.

After 20 days from this treatment, a young patient loses 40% muscle mass, and gets mouth or vocal cords trauma, as well as possible pulmonary or heart complications.

It is for this reason that old or already weak people can't withstand the treatment and die. Many of us are in this boat ... so stay safe unless you want to take the chance of ending up here. This is NOT the flu.

Add a tube into your stomach, either through your nose or skin for liquid food, a sticky bag around your butt to collect the diarrhea, a Foley tube to collect urine, an IV for fluids and meds, an A-line to monitor your BP that is completely dependent upon finely calculated med doses, teams of nurses, CRNA’s and MA’s to reposition your limbs every two hours and lying on a mat that circulates ice cold fluid to help bring down your 104 degree temp.

Anyone want to try all that out?

Then stay home! Stay safe and well!!
