Germs at school are nothingto sneeze at. According to theU.S. Centers for Disease Controland Prevention, nearly 22 mil-lion school days are lost eachyear due to the common coldand u. That may be why par-ents worry as much about theirchildren bringing home germsas they do bad grades.

According to a study con-ducted by Kelton Research forSeventh Generation, 82 percentof K-5 parents fret about germsin their childrens classrooms.Fortunately, that may not haveto happen.

Minimizing the number ofdisease-causing germs that yourchildren are exposed to is easierthan you might think, says Dr.

Alan Greene, best-selling au-thor and pediatrician. The key

to success is knowing where thegerms reside in the classroomand at home, and what to use tomanage them.

Dr. Greene recommends us-ing disinfectants that kill germsnaturally to clean high-trafcareas such as desks, doorknobsand remote controls.

Because the average childcontracts 6.5 colds a year, Dr.Greene suggests taking the fol-lowing precautions to keep your

    children away from germs:

Optimize theimmune systemn Reap the benets of pro-

biotics such as those found in yogurt. A recent study showed

that children who had enoughprobiotics daily throughout thecold and u season had a signi-cant reduction in the number of

illnesses they contracted.n Be sure your child is get-

ting plenty of vitamin D from thesun, from food or from a supple-ment.n Build a strong foundation.

Good food, good sleep and goodphysical activity all help the im-mune system ourish.

    Reduceunnecessaryexposure to

harmful germsn Teach children the ke

times to clean their hands in theclassroom, including after sneez-ing, coughing or using the rest-room, upon leaving high-riskplaces (recess, naptime, play sta-tions) and before eating.n

Stress the importance onot touching the eyes, nose omouth.n Demonstrate to your chil-

dren how to cover their mouthsand noses for every cough andsneeze.n Sixty percent of teachers

surveyed request that parentsdonate disinfecting wipes to theclassroom. The ones from Sev-enth Generation, consideredthe worlds most trusted brandof authentic and environmen-tally responsible products foa healthy home, can kill 99.9percent of germs naturally with

the active ingredient thymol, de-rived from the herb thyme.

Protect your youngsters from classroom germs

The Law of the Garbage TruckA few weeks ago, Barb and I took a trip up north and I picked up a local newspaper from one

to the small towns. In it was this article and I am passing it along. The Author was not identified.

One day I hopped into a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right handlane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My cab driverslammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches.

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I asked, Why did you do that? This guy almost

ruined your car and sent us to the hospital. Why were you so friendly? This is when the cab drivertaught me the Law of the Garbage Truck.

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full offrustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As the garbage builds up, they need a placeto dump it and sometimes they will dump it on you. Dont take it personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Dont take their garbageand spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. Donteven mention it.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let the garbage truckstake over their day. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.SoLove the people who treat you right and pray for the ones who dont.Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it.Have a blessed, garbage free day.

Thank you, to some unknown cab driver for the lesson. How we think hasa huge impact on our Health.

Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
