    NORTH AMERICAN

    PRECIS SYNDICATE

You made it through the short-est days of the year, and now thatthe days are longer, take time toadd more physical activity to yourfamilys day. Balancing your childsschool day, homework and otheractivities can be hectic, but making

small changes this spring can leadto big rewards. Before you know it,your family will become a more ac-tive and healthier bunch.

Parents are role models for theirchildren. When your children seeyou eating right and being physicallyactive, theres a good chance theylldo the same. Living a healthier, morephysically active lifestyle doesnt re-quire expensive sporting equipmentor memberships. There are fun, cre-ative ways to improve your familysphysical activity habits.

To start, monitor your familysdaily activities for one week. Iden-tify times when your family could

increase its physical activity. Each week, add more activity into yourfamilys routine.

Here are a few ideas to get youstarted:

nPlay a game of tag instead of watching television. Tag providesfun and physical activity. Childrenlove it especially if they can chasetheir parents and it increases ev-eryones heart rate at the same time.

n Start a family garden. Begingetting the soil ready to plant ow-ers and vegetables. If you have lim-ited space, try growing herbs in pots.Homegrown vegetables and herbsare great money savers and ensure

    youll have something available for

healthy summer meals and snacks.Fresh herbs are also a tasty alterna-tive to salt when cooking.

nGo old school. Help your chil-dren draw hopscotch or four squarecourts on the sidewalk. Sidewalkchalk is a colorful and inexpensive

way for children to create their ownactivity space.

nPlan a nature scavenger hunt.Pick up small nets and mason jarsfor kids to use to catch butteries orinteresting insects, and collect ow-ers in the neighborhood or at a local

    park.

n Help your children organiza neighborhood softball or kickballgame with their friends. Pitch in bplanning healthy snacks and drinksto keep everyone energized duringgames.

Start with small steps to get yourfamily to move more. Making littlchanges can help everyone maintaina healthy weight.

For more tips on how to help yourfamily live a healthier lifestyle, visitthe We Can! (Ways to Enhance Chil-drens Activity & Nutrition) web-

    site: wecan.nhlbi.nih.gov.

Spring forward with fun, healthy activities

    MONDAY,March26,2012PIONEEREASTNEWSSHOPPER 15Exercise

I am still trying to avoid exercise because my old programming has always been, I hate exercise and working out is awaste of time. However for the last two weeks I have been doing it and each day it is getting easier. Gradual transition intoan exercise routine is very important. In the past I would go out the first day and do too much. I recall several occasionsof good intentions for exercise and quitting because I hurt too much the next day. Slowly working into this process is veryimportant.

This week, we received the results of our Apo E Gene and Advanced Cholesterol tests. I now know that I need a lot ofaerobic exercise. For my genotype toxins cannot be removed from the body very easily through the kidneys and bowel. Formy body, the toxins need to come out through the lungs and skin. The aerobic pathway is the only way these poisons can beremoved from the body in my genotype. That means aerobic exercise, hot, sweaty, fun activities.

My former thinking would be to dream up ways to get out of doing the exercise. I might even have gone so far as tosubconsciously arrange for a sprained ankle or other injury so I would not have to do it. But this time I am motivated. Mygenotype has a high probability of Neurological Disorders like Alzheimers disease and Multiple Sclerosis. These diseasesare caused by intake of toxins that we cannot eliminate, consequently they accumulate, and cause some malfunction ofthe nervous system. It is much like a plugged oil filter or getting too many dead leaves clogging the down spout of your raingutters. We could compare it to a nice trout stream or a stagnant swamp.

So there are two parts to the solution. First, eat the correct things and stop adding to the toxic load. Second, improve thedetoxification process and clear out the existing accumulations by exercise.

The good news is that our miraculous body can heal itself if we do not continue to promote the obstacle to the cure. Iam amazed when I see how we poison ourselves constantly, eating for pleasure, eating poison, and then expect to remainhealthy. We put all those toxins into our body, dont do anything to clear them out, and expect our doctor to fix us when weget ill. I know. I have been there myself. I used to drink six diet cokes a day, smoke my pipe, drink toomuch alcohol and sit around watching TV all night. Ten years ago I made some big changes, but nowit is time for more.

My choice is to have forty or more years of health. So that means exercise. Both aerobic andanaerobic exercises are needed. Anaerobic exercise is strengthening and stretching, things like weightlifting and yoga or Thai Chi. Aerobic is anything that gets the heart rate up, deep breathing, andsweating. This can be walking, biking, running, swimming, dance, Zumba, anything that gets thingsmoving. Some people need a personal trainer, or some need to join a fitness facility like the LakeviewCommunity Wellness Center, or some can do this on their own. It does not matter. Just, do it! If youknow your Apo E genotype, follow the recommended percentage of aerobic / anaerobic exercise. If

you do not have that information, then do 50/50. Just, do it.

Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
