Head Pain Migraine Part TwoLast week we learned that the first part of a migraine was constriction of blood vessels in the brain. This change in our normal

physiology has to have some trigger. Food, Toxins, Hormones are triggers to cause this change. Stress can have a huge impact onour general body chemistry and therefore is very important as we learn how to eliminate head pain.

Stress is associated with what is called the Fight or Flight response in our body. When we sense danger, we are geneticallyprogrammed to respond to this danger by running to safety or fighting for our survival. Our pulse goes up. The blood pressurerises. Breathing rate increases. Blood sugar goes up. Muscles tense. Everything is preparing, getting ready to meet the challenge.

The release of adrenalin causes vasoconstriction. As we know this vasoconstriction is part of the first phase of a migraine. So everytime we get stressed, we are right on the verge of triggering a migraine.

Our body is designed to meet these Fight or Flight episodes and then recover. However when there is constant bombardmentof our body by stressful events we sometimes begin to break down our genetically weakest system. So based on our geneticsusceptibility, some of us will begin to have damage to certain parts of the brain caused by the effects of the Fight or Flightevents.

Stress causes the damage to the system and becomes part of the trigger that starts the chemical cascade in our body thatpresents as a migraine. Stress is a natural, normal part of being Human. We cannot really get away from it. So what do we do? Wecan learn to change how we respond to it. In the traditional medical world this is done with prescription medications that dampenour response to the stress triggers. In theory this is good, but in the long run, it does not work very well because people tend toget addicted to the medications. Then they have a new set of problems and stressors to deal with.

The best way to deal with stress is to learn to change how our body reacts to the Fight or Flight triggers. When we have learnedthis, our automatic response to the stressful trigger is not an increase in blood pressure and pulse, but a calm, cool mind and bodythat can handle the situation without damage to the system.

Learning basic relaxation and meditation techniques is where we should begin. Many years ago, I learned a few simple thingsand since then have studied much more advanced techniques. We suggest starting with a relaxation classor even a recording to begin to learn this process of calming the mind. Spend a little time each day in themorning or just before going to sleep practicing this process.

It is as simple as sitting in a quiet comfortable place where you will not be disturbed for 10 or 15 minutes. Then close your eyes, inhale a deep breath and then as you exhale consciously feel your body relax.Mentally imagine you are at an ideal place of relaxation. This could be a place you have been before or acompletely imaginary place. Our brain cannot tell the difference between actually being there and vividlyimagining that you are there. Then daydream in this pleasant state of mind, relaxing both body and mind.Doing this regularly will replace stress chemistry with relaxation chemistry and will begin the repair processin our body. With practice our emergency response will be calm and resourceful instead of Fight or Flightand the frequency and intensity of the migraines will change and eventually disappear.

Ten tips for vehicle maintenanceNorth AmericAN Precis syNdicAte

To keep your car on the road tosafety and savings, now is a goodtime to make sure that its in the bestcondition.

Now is the time for motoriststo ensure that their vehicles are inshape, said Jim Sassorossi, headof Product Development at Mopar,Chrysler Groups service, parts and

customer-care brand. The safety, performance and life of a vehiclehinge on preventive maintenance.

Here are hints on how:nCheck Brakes Brakes are

one of the most used (and oftenabused) components on a car. A thinlayer of the brake pad disintegratesevery time the brakes are applied.Replace pads or shoes before drumsor rotors become damaged. Checkpads, shoes, drums, rotors, calipers, ttings, brake hardware and theparking brake to prevent problems.

nCheck Tires Check air pres-sure on all tires, including the spare.Improper tire pressure leads to pre-mature wear and a decrease in fuelmileage. The entire surface of thetire, both tread and sidewall, should

be inspected for uneven or irregularwear.

nCheck Lights Inspect andtest all exterior lamps and lights, including turn signals and hazardlights, to ensure that they are in prop-er working order and alignment.

nCheck Air Filter The airlter is one of the unsung heroes of a

vehicle, as it protects the engine fromairborne contaminants. Replacing adirty air lter helps ensure properperformance and longer life.

n Check Oil Oil is the life-blood of the engine. Engine oil levelshould be changed and replenished

regularly.n Check All Fluid Levels Dirty or low uids may affect theperformance of a vehicle and canlead to breakdowns if not properlymonitored and lled.

nCheck Engine Belts, Hosesand Fuel Filter Prevent break-downs or serious engine damage andmaximize fuel economy.

n Check Battery Look forcorroded terminals and inspect for a

bulging or cracked case.n Check Shocks and Struts

Theyre vital for a smooth ride andoptimal handling and may affect oth-

er vehicle parts.n Check Wiper Blades

    Properly functioning wiper blades

increase visibility. To alert you whenits time for a change, Mopar all-sea-son wiper blades feature an innova-tive wear indicator that graduallyturns from black to green to yellowas the blades wear.

Mopar is a contraction of MO-tor and PARts. While its ChryslerGroups service, parts and customer-care brand, an alliance with MagnetiMarelli enables Chrysler Group deal-erships to service vehicles for GM,Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyun-dai and Kia.
