Mindfulness

Pinwheel Breathing (5 minutes)

Pupils can stand or sit for this activity. Ask students to put both hands on their belly. Students should close their eyes, or look down to their hands. Guide students in taking three slow deep breaths in and out to see if they can feel their hands being moved. You may like to count “1, 2, 3” for each breath in and “1, 2, 3” for each breath out, pausing slightly at the end of each exhale. Encourage students to think about how the breath feels, answering the following questions silently, in their mind.

– What is moving your hands? Is it the air filling your lungs?– Can you feel the air moving in through your nose?– Can you feel it moving out through your nose?– Does the air feel a little colder on the way in and warmer on the way out?– Can you hear your breath?– What does it sound like?

If you’d prefer not to wing it, download and print our Mindful Breathing Guided Meditation Script.Providing students with an object to focus on is a great way to encourage concentration during mindfulness lessons. Use pinwheels in conjunction with the mindful breathing exercise above, making the pinwheel spin with every exhale.

La Luna

This film is about a boy learning to do things HIS OWN way, but at the beginning both his grandfather and his father try and make him l like them – how do they do this with the hat? How do they do this later with the brush/ broom?

What does the boy do that is funny, when his dad and grandad are arguing?

What does the film suggest, makes the moon light up?

What happens that the grandad and dad can’t fix?

What does the boy do to his hat which shows he is different to his dad and grandad?

How does the boy fix the problem?

Do you like the film? Why/ why not? How does it make you feel?

The poems 'The School Bell' and 'Spaghetti' by Frank Flynn and 'The Beach' by William Hart-Smith are read over a visual background. Craig Charles discusses how the poets have used simile and metaphor to create images.
