Manitowoc County is home to rich heritage and fascinating history. Between our two sites, the Heritage Center (1701 Michigan Avenue) and Pinecrest Historical Village (924 Pinecrest Lane), the Manitowoc County Historical Society works to enrich the quality of life in our community by building connections to the past and providing interactive learning experiences.

The Heritage Center is home to the remarkable Civil War Flag of Company A, hosts our flagship exhibit “What Makes Us Who We Are”, an archaeology exhibit featuring hundreds of Native American artifacts, and our Hungry for History series, which features an exciting educational program and a catered meal. Our staffed research library is available to researchers and history enthusiasts and features thousands of records, photographs, and books.

Located just 3 miles west of Manitowoc on County Highway JJ, Pinecrest Historical Village brings the past to life with over 25 historic buildings includes homes, a one room school, cheese factory, blacksmith shop, and locomotive. Daily visitors can enjoy our ‘Voices from the Past’ audio tour and school or community groups can schedule a guided tour. Families can enjoy our Children’s Discovery Village, which features a picnic area, play set, miniature historical playhouses and a wooden locomotive. The historic playhouses, a log cabin and a one room school house, include items for learning and role play such as school desks, chalk boards, a cook stove, kitchen items and a rope bed. See our calendar of events for our exciting line up of hands on history experiences.

Visit us in 2011 to experience our all new Children’s Discovery Village and family picnic area. The area features picnic tables, a play set, a wooden locomotive, and playhouses inspired by our village buildings. Children can explore history and role play as they take a break from their tour. Families can extend their museum experience by packing a picnic lunch and planning extra time for their children to visit their own museum.

Major gifts and contributions to the project have been given by Bank First National, the Kallies Charitable Trust, the Stangel Fund, Heartland Play Systems, Braun Building Center, Lakeshore Technical College, Lowe’s of Manitowoc, Lakeland Landscape, Jim’s excavating and Lakeshore Forest Products. The project was made possible through the special efforts of the Chamber of Manitowoc County’s Leadership Program.

The structure was moved to the Village in August 1998 and over the last few months work as the new Welcome Center has been making remarkable progress. Local architect Tony Fodden has developed a detailed plan for the restoration of the McAllister House Welcome Center which, when complete, will include an A.D.A. compliant welcome center, gift shop, exhibit space, restrooms and a classroom. The second floor will include a kitchenette, offices, and storage space.
