This year’s annual Downtown Daily Bread Benefit Concert which takes place on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 in the evening is also a part of the continuing celebration sponsored by Music at Pine Street, of the twentieth anniversary of the renewal and enlargement of the organ at Pine Street. Session Notesfor March

Approved microfilming of early Pine Street records and subsequent deposit of original Minute and Register volumes at the Presbyterian Historical Society.

Granted approval to the Kitchen Committee to hold a Christmas Cookie Bazaar, with the monies received being used to refurbish the third floor kitchen.

Gave approval for a mission initiative on Saturday, April 28, to volunteer with Rebuilding Together Greater Harrisburg at their national event day. Pine Street will volunteer at a home in New Cumberland and a home in Harrisburg, doing painting, light carpentry work. installing grab bars, installing weather stripping, etc.

Gave approval for the Presbytery’s New Church Development Committee to use the sanctuary for worship services on selected Sunday evenings.

nature, Tom joins Courtney Gray, our soprano soloist, for a reading of the solo cantata, The Way to Emmaus by Jaromir Weinberger. Weinberger was one of the twentieth century’s most important Czech composers and he wrote opera and symphonic literature as well as some superb solo pieces for voice. This setting follows the journey of several of the Disciples after the Resurrection as they go to Emmaus, and Jesus joins their party. The colors of organ are used to great effect in this complex and beautiful accompaniment.

The organ, as used in this concert, is featured in the same way as it is on Sunday mornings, as part of an ensemble. Whether it be accompanying the choir, playing the liturgical responses or leading the hymns, its true success as a musical instrument is judged by how well it ‘plays with others’. By this standard, it is indeed a great instrument.

We hope you will set the date aside and plan to be here. The music will be grand and the cause is one of Pine Street’s most important mission outreach projects. Few churches have their very own mission across the street from the church. This is one of the unique aspects of our church, and our faithful support of the endeavors of Elaine Strokoff and her crew make it possible for us as a congregation to follow Jesus’ command to feed the hungry and care for the poor. Admission is free, with an offering received. Parking is available in the South Street Garage and child care is provided. Come in a generous mood!

On Palm Sunday, April 1st, and Easter Sunday, April 8th, the youth will be running a fund raiser for their mission trip to the Duvall Home in Glenwood, Florida this summer. The Duvall Home is a residence for people who are mentally handicapped. We will be interacting with members of the community and helping to do work around the Duvall Home campus. The goal is for our youth to understand how people who suffer from poverty of the mind have a special place in God’s heart.

Like last year, we are only doing one fundraiser. Following both the 8:30am and 11:00am worship services, the youth will be in the gathering place offering three levels of support: the sacrificial heart ($15), the friendship heart ($30) and the golden heart ($50).

If you choose to support the youth with a sacrificial heart, you will receive a lapel pin with a heart encompassing a cross in thanks for your support. If you choose to support the youth with a friendship heart, you will receive a lapel pin with a heart encompassing two hands shaking as a thank you for your support. If you choose to support the youth with a golden heart, you will receive a gold heart lapel pin and a hand written letter from Florida composed by one of the youth on

A Client Storyby Christine Patrick, DDB Counselor

Her name is Lori. She lived in a beautiful home on the West Shore with her husband and little girl. She never thought she would be in this kind of situation... “Homeless.” Her husband started using drugs and drinking more than usual, and that is when the abuse started.

As time went on, the abuse got worse. Traci sent her then-7-year-old daughter to live with her grandmother. It was not long after that, that Lori had to leave her home due to domestic violence.

Lori came to Harrisburg to go to the YWCA domestic violence shelter. There she encountered some problems and in her frustration she found her way to DDB. She came in my office crying and ready to give up. She talked for about an hour while I made some phone calls to get her some help. Finally I got her into the YWCA domestic violence shelter, afterwhich she was able to get housing through HPRP. On February 22, Lori moved into her new apartment in Mechanicsburg. She is looking for a job and when she can, she will get her daughter back and start life over. She is soooo grateful for DDB and all the help we offered her. I gave her dishes from my home and I called New Digs to get her a bed and other items for her new place.

Good Luck, Lori. We are proud of you!

Daily Bread. I have been taking painting lessons from a private teacher for the past seven years on a weekly basis, studying mostly oil painting and drawing techniques. For the auction, I have decided to do a series of four paintings of an orange in various stages of the eating process. Each painting is done in oil on an 8x10 stretched canvas. As part of a silent auction, you will be able to bid on the paintings on Sunday morning, April 15, and again before and during the concert on Friday, April 20. All proceeds will go to Downtown Daily Bread.

Medicine Containers

Please don’t throw away your empty medicine containers – prescription and non-prescription plastic containers (no glass). Soak off the labels and bring them to the church. Place them in the box on the mission table in the Gathering Place. They will be given to the World Surgical Foundation when groups take medical mission trips to places like Haiti and India. This is a new mission opportunity for all of us and doesn’t cost us any money. A WIN-WIN!!!

Tour of Mission Central

Thursday, April 19, 1:00pm – 4:00pm.Interested members of Pine Street will tour the Mission Central facility in Mechanicsburg to see the numerous ways this agency is ready to help people in crisis. Those who are willing and able may stay to do some volunteering – probably putting together kits that are sent to disaster areas worldwide. Remember the Haiti kits we made after the earthquake? We made hygiene kits and school kits that were sent to Haiti to help in the emergency / recovery process. Sign-up will be at the Welcome Center starting March 25. We will have another opportunity to do the same on Saturday morning, June 30.

Rebuilding Together

Saturday, April 28 starting at 9:00am. We will volunteer with Rebuilding Together Greater Harrisburg at their national event day. Pine Street members will volunteer at two homes — one in New Cumberland and one home in Harrisburg — doing painting, light carpentry work, installing grab bars, installing weather stripping, doing light yard work, etc. Lunch is provided by Rebuilding Together at the worksite. A picnic dinner is provided at Fort Hunter, starting at 5:00pm. You do NOT need construction skills to join us for this day. This is actually a fun day of fellowship with others from Pine Street — an opportunity to get to know one another better. Sign-ups will begin on April 1 at the Welcome Center.

Interfaith ‘Prayer for

Peace’ Service Monday, April 30 at

5:30pm. This is a lovely service where people from the Harrisburg area offer prayers in the manner of their faith tradition. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Unitarians, Buddhists and others will come to our sanctuary to pray for peace. In the past some prayers were sung, some were danced, and some were spoken. The mission committee will provide an extensive reception following the service.

Camp Krislund Work Day

Saturday, May 5 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. Annual spring workday to get the camp ready for the summer. Lunch will be provided. Stay tuned for more information as the date approaches.

Walk to Support Community

Checkup CenterSaturday, May 19,

starting at 9:00am at the HACC Campus. Mission Committee is interested in getting members of the congregation to support this walk because the money raised will support the Community Check-up Center (an agency we support through the Giving Tree at Christmas). Those who participate are asked to get sponsors to pledge money to support their walk. More information will be provided nearer to the date of the walk.

Camp Krislund’s mission is: Restoring lives by God’s grace in mountain solitude through worshipping community, purposeful spiritual adventure, and Christian hospitality to all ages. The summer camping schedule has been posted on line and you may find this at www.krislund.org. If you are interested in this wonderful camping experience for your child please check out the website or call Cheryl Goode at 238-9304 x105.

A Growing KOALA Club

Needs Your Help by Cheryl Goode

KOALA Club began in October of 2010 with four students in attendance. As that year progressed we saw a steady increase of students. This year (2012) we still have fourteen or more children each week. Students arrive full of energy and ready to play games. Usually we have relay type games with lots of running to take care of that joyous energy! After games we take a refreshment break. The next fifteen minutes is handbook time. Each student has a handbook to use for Bible memorization (They can now find the handbook on the Pine Street website). Ideally we need at least six adults to coach the learning process, but eight would be even better!

I need your help! If you enjoy children, reading and have an hour to give of your time on a Wednesday evening please call Cheryl Goode at 238-9307 x105 for more details.

New MOMS Groupby Cheryl A. Goode,

Director of Children and Family Ministry

One of my favorite Bible verses comes from Matthew 19: 13-15 where Jesus welcomes the children. This scripture made a point to the Disciples. Children were not significant in political terms. They were weak, without funds and helpless, so they could not help Jesus’ movement. The Disciples believed that children did not have enough life experience or cognitive ability to understand Jesus’ teaching.

But when we think about the children in this scripture, we see that then, as today, the children are not interested in the adults. They are not interested in the adults’ political aspirations, their greater experience in life or their higher cognitive abilities. The children are not even interested in what Jesus is saying! They are interested in Jesus himself.

The children understand that Jesus is the most important thing for their growth. This kind of intuition is what Jesus was trying to make the Disciples understand. And this kind of intuition is what I would like to foster in the children and moms of Pine Street by offering a time for moms to come together.

We would meet on the third Sunday of each month for a time of learning and fellowship. Dinner will be offered at 5:00pm in Fellowship Hall, and at 5:30pm we will gather in Room 106 for our time together. Child care will be available in the Nursery. Our first topic of discussion will be “What is faith and when does it begin?”

For those of you with children up to age five, please join me on Sunday, April 15, 2012 for our first “Moms” group experience. If you have any questions please call me at the church 238-9307 x105.

the trip as a thank you for your support.

Ultimately, your support goes towards paying for the cost of the vans, which are more expensive this year because we need two for the 19 people attending the trip. These vans will cost $2600 for the length of the trip and that does not include the cost of gas.

Please donate generously. We need all the assistance we can get to help defray the costs of travel. All donations are tax deductable and much appreciated for this important mission to serve the mentally handicapped.

Financial News

Pine Street finished the 2011 operating budget with a $13,662.00 surplus! It will be carried into 2012.

PThe Capital

Campaign is officially over. There is an excess of $22,226.51 which will be added to the Building Fund.

second full month of live web streaming, with between 8 and 12 live views per week. One of those translated into a couple visiting our church.

In February the website had 1507 visits, with 36% of those visits being from new people outside Pine Street. The average time spent on the site is about 3:44, which is extremely high for a website. Many sites average less than 45 seconds.

Our top viewed pages are the home page (824), live-stream (262, which means people are viewing it when we are not live), PSL (205), and Ask Alex Anything (98).
