Don’t forget to bring your dollar bill and place it in the offering plate.

It’s a way to model giving and generosity for our children and those worshipping with us. It’s a

simple way to teach about faithful giving.

Men's BreakfastApril 3rd at 8:00 a.m.

A hot breakfast and reconnecting with friends. Join us at 8:00 in the North Hall of the Community Center. Danny Bilyeu from Sarasota Habitat, will be presenting the program. (This is the last Men’s Breakfast for the season. We will resume again in the fall.)

you are telling them that you noticed them or you know them. You are saying that they are important to you and that you value and respect them. Calling someone by name means that connecting is a possibility. Is not connecting with others who we are and what we are asked to embody? I actually believe that if we focus on the little things that matter – like the names of others, relationship occur, relationships grow and good things happen.

In the biblical world, a good name meant more than a good reputation, because one’s name identified the character of the person carrying it. In fact, every name clearly had meaning and that name said something about the person who bore it. Proverbs 22:1 reads: "A good name is more desirable than great riches." Your name matters and knowing Annette’s name matters as well.

We’ve been told to believe that our dominant culture has commodified existence which isolates us from one another. But for us who are trying to connect and create community, we contradict that assumption because we know what is true for us, we know that there is another way… it’s the more excellent way. As people of faith we are connectors – gatherers of people who form villages and communities of meaning and depth. We are people who respond to the needs of those who are hurting. We are gatherers of people with the capacity to create a culture of caring. We are reminded of the words in scripture: “So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

“Sometimes you do wanna go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came.” That rings true and I believe we know where that happens. Who is your Annette?

Ring Sarasota closes their ninth season with “Celebrate Sarasota.” Pristine white-sandy beaches, breathtaking sunsets, theater, concerts, ballet, opera, diverse dining, galleries, museums, the circus, spectator and participant sporting events …. That’s Sarasota County, often referred to as “Florida’s Cultural Coast!” Listen as the crowd roars as they root for their favorite Spring training team with “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Imagine hearing the calliope resounding as the circus rolls into town with “Barnum & Bailey’s Favorite.” Enjoy a visit to the theatre with vibrant renditions of “Overture to Carmen,” “Festive Dance,” and a rendition of “Bring Him Home.” Remembering our friends who work endlessly to maintain the beauty of our natural resources, we offer “Under the Sea” and “Walk in the Park.” Enjoy a beautiful sunset and a romantic stroll down one of our sandy beaches with “Love Will Keep Us Together”. And, as with all Ring Sarasota concerts, we pay tribute to this great nation with a vibrate and stirring “America the Beautiful!” All of this and even a few more …. We hope you will join us as we proudly present, “Celebrate Sarasota!”

Sounds of the Soul

We finish our Sounds of the Soul season on Friday, April 5th, at 6:00 p.m. with our own Wayne Fisher playing for us.

Our new Church Picture Directory is now up and running on the internet and available for your phone, IPad, or tablet through an App. You can download the free ‘Instant Church Directory’ app from the Playstore (android) or App Store (Apple).

Once downloaded, you will need to create an account. If you have an email listed in our church directory you will be able to set up an account. If you do not have an email listed in the directory you will need to contact the church with your email address so that we can add it to the directory.

For security, all the data is protected by SSL and only those members with email addresses in the directory can set up an account to access the directory through the app/internet.

The printed version of the directory will soon be available. As new members are added and/or information is updated, the online/app directory will automatically be updated.

For those that would like to view our church photo directory on their computer, go to www.instantchurchdirectory.com and create an account. If you have already created an account for your smart phone or tablet, you will not need to re-create a new account, simply log in with the same password.

There will be a printed copy of the new picture directory at the information booth and community center for the next two Sundays. Please stop by and verify your information. Once verified, we will print copies for the congregation.

Did you know that you are more likely to meet a person in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack? Mental illnesses are common: 1 in 5 adults and diagnosed each year and 1 in 5 youth ages 13-18 have, or will have a severe mental disorder at some point in their life.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This course is delivered by a certified Mental Health First Aid USA Instructor. Following this training, one will know how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and addictions.

Health and Wholeness Ministry of First Presbyterian Church, Sarasota, is able to provide this course, free of charge, and limited to 25 participants, on Friday, April 5th, 2019.

Jeffrey F. Hamill: Born in New Hampshire to Pat and John Hamill. Jeff is the youngest of three brothers. Jeff and his family have lived in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, & Michigan. Jeff’s father, John, was an executive for Oldsmobile. Jeff and his family have been in the Sarasota area for over 25 years. Jeff has a degree in Business as well as Nursing. He has been a nurse for over 20 years. He has worked the majority of his nursing career in the hospital setting. He currently works for Doctor’s Hospital and was at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for 17+ years. He grew up in the Methodist church. He has memories of his mom teaching Sunday school and was a member of a local Methodist church for almost 10 years. He is a wonderful partner and support to his wife, Melanie in her ministry. He is also a doting father to Johanna who will be one next month.

Greetings! My name is Janet Duffy and I am very excited about becoming a member of your church! I was born in Beverly, MA, where I lived for 17 years with my family until I went to college to pursue a degree in Biology and teaching. I spent every summer at Lake Winnipesauke in NH, where my life long passion for the outdoors and nature was fostered.

I married my husband, Jim, after college, and we lived in Hanson, MA for 40 years. I was blessed with a son and twin daughters. Life was a busy time then, raising the children and teaching full time high school biology. Going to sporting events, church, Girl Scouts, and school events pretty much was the order of the day. My children often helped me outside in collecting samples of mosses, etc., in preparation for my classes the next day. After my children went to college, I became the Director of Science and continued in this administrative position for a few years before I retired in 2010. I still step in and teach occasionally, for maternity leaves, etc.

I cannot remember my life without a passion for Jesus. I mean that literally. Jesus grabbed me very early in life, for reasons I understand now.. (Too long of a story for here!) At the age of 6 I loved Jesus dearly, and He has been my lifeline since then. As a child I was raised in the Immanuel Congregational Church in Beverly, MA. When I married and moved to Hanson, I joined the First Congregational Church there. I taught Sunday School there for a while, and later became a deacon for the church. Now I am a snowbird of sorts, and live in Sarasota for 6 months, returning north in the summers. My children live in Cleveland, Houston, and Durham, N.C., and I have 3 grandchildren. I look forward to worshipping with you and serving Jesus through the body of this church.

April 2019 www.pineshorespres.org Page 9Gail Kevenk: My roots with Pine Shores Church are quite deep. My Grandmother, Isabel Wetherbie, was one of the first members of this church. She played a significant role in encouraging the growth of my Christian faith. When my grandparents retired to Siesta Key, we would visit them for family vacations. At that time, I had an early exposure to Pine Shores, for church was a mandatory activity in our family. My Mother, Helen Beardsley, continued the line of involvement. She was the Church Visitor for many years. Many people commented on how she had helped them. When I moved to Sarasota there was no doubt which church I would attend. I have felt a strong sense of family connection here. The most significant thing about me is my connection to Turkey. While working as a medical secretary at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, I met a Turkish radiologist named Cengiz Kevenk. After our marriage, we went to live in Turkey and stayed there for eight and one/half years. I became somewhat fluent in the Turkish language, as we lived on the local economy. Our life was not as barren as some may expect. All of the ARTS are subsidized by the government so that tickets were $.50 or $1.00. We could afford to go to the symphony opera, ballet and theater.

In my younger years, I enjoyed sailing and skiing. I still play tennis and bridge. My involvement in church is predominantly through the Choir, Circle, Butterflies and Bible Study with Karen.

Madeline Heath (Maddie:) I was born and raised in Sarasota, and absolutely love sunny Florida. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I am actually the fifth generation in my family to live in Sarasota, so I am proud to call this place home and where I plan on raising my family. My great grandparents lived in the pine shores neighborhood and were a part of this church, and my grandparents currently live in the neighborhood and attend this church. My grandparents and parents also got married at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church. I am excited to reconnect with my family history, find new meaning, and be a member here. I am the oldest of three children with a younger brother and sister. I am getting married to the love of my life this year, Matthew Tympanick, who has also joined the church. Before coming back to Sarasota, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in Communication at Florida Gulf Coast University and my master’s degree in Higher Education Curriculum & Instruction at the University of South Florida. I currently work at New College of Florida as an Assistant Director for the Center for Career Engagement & Opportunity. I love working with students on developing career ready competencies and connecting with community members to improve our internships program. I look forward to building lasting connections at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church, and embarking on a new spiritual journey.

Matthew Tympanick (Matt:) I am originally from Plymouth, Massachusetts and moved down to Sarasota in September 2016. I am the oldest of three boys (my poor Mother I know). I got my bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina University and my law degree from UMass Law. I am an Assistant State Attorney for Sarasota County where I prosecute felony cases. I have been fortunate enough to conduct

over thirty jury and non-jury trials for the 12th Judicial Circuit. I am an avid golfer as well as a huge sports fan. My favorite teams are the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. I met my fiancé, Madeline Heath on a dating-app in September 2017 and we have been together ever since. I love being able to share my spiritual experience with her as we are about to move into the next phase of our lives together. We are getting married in November at New College. I look forward to sharing my faith with everyone and am excited to be a part of your community.

STOP THE BLEEDSarasota United for Responsibility and Equity

SURE held its annual Nehemiah Action Assembly on March 25th. Two issues were addressed. The first issue addressed was the In-school suspension and restorative justice initiative. Superintendent Dr. Todd Bowden agreed to the following action plan: 1) that at least one Assistant Principal of each secondary school receive the district’s “Meeting

Training,” 2) five elementary schools will become Restorative Practice pilot schools, 3) all teachers at the “pilot” elementary schools will receive the “Initial Training” no later than December 31, 2019 and 4) to plan to monitor and evaluate the implementation and use of the “Initial Training” at the five “pilot” schools and the implementation and use of the “Meeting Training” in the secondary schools.

The other issue addressed at the meeting was affordable housing for Sarasota. Although all the commissioners from the city and county were invited to come and participate in the meeting, only Commissioner Hagen Brody accepted the invitation. He pledged to 1) be a champion of SURE’S Housing Opportunity Fund, 2) to make a motion at the city commission meeting on 4/15/19 to establish an oversight board for the Housing Opportunity Fund, 3) to make a motion at the meeting on 4/15/19 to authorize staff to identify funding to reach the goal of $5 million in annual and dedicated funding for the Housing Opportunity Fund, and 4) to include in the motion to agree to report back from staff by July 1, 2019 so that this funding can be included in the 2020 budget.

On Monday, April 29th, at 6:00 p.m. SURE will host a celebration party. The location will be determined soon. All are invited to attend. A big thank you to all the Pine Shores’ folks who attended the meeting. We were well represented. If you would like to more about SURE, please contact Ken Junkins.

The Council met on March 21, 2019. Bert Mitchell shared his recent experience with Kim Phuc Phan Thi and her husband Toan. Kim is the author of Fire Road, which is about her journey since the Napalm bombings in Vietnam. Thank you letters were received from Florida Southern College, Heifer International, Mision Peniel, and ECHO. Pine Shores Youth Thank you, Pine Shores!PSY would like to thank everyone who attended

and supported our First Annual Chili Cook-Off on March 17th. It was a fun and successful fundraiser, and we were able to raise $1,800 for summer trips and conferences. A big special thanks to our 10 teams that donated and cooked their special chili: Presbyterian Women, New Connections, Pastors, Men’s Breakfast, Choir, Council, Staff, Joy Company, InBetweeners and Pairings... THANK YOU!

The Winners: We had a 3-way tie between Pairings, New Connections, and Pastors. With one late vote coming in, our winner was Team Pastors! Everyone’s chili was delicious, but it must’ve been Bruce’s special (and spicy) Aji Peruvian sauce that got the winning vote. Thank you again, Pine Shores Community!

PW CIRCLE MEMBERS TAKE NOTE!! It's almost time to order the study books for next

year's circle Bible Study. The cost will be $11.00 or $15.00 for large print. Please come to circle in April prepared to pay by cash or check. In past years we have lost money because some books were ordered but not picked up or picked up but not paid for, so we are prepaying this year. Spring Greetings to Butterflies: The Easter favors from JOY Company are in the library. Please initial the sheet when you get your items.

The April Gathering will be on Tuesday, April 23rd, and will feature a program by Laura Griffith, “Flowers are Special.” The Presbyterian Women Birthday Offering will be received (envelopes to be mailed out on April 1st), and we will also be collecting baby items for the My Choice Pregnancy Center that we heard about at our March Gathering. Please come for coffee, snacks, and fellowship at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the program. We are hoping to see you there! Thank you. PW Coordinating Team.

Replaced burned out light bulbs at the Community Center.

Night lights were installed over the sidewalks that lead to the entrances of the Narthex.

The Property Committee replaced worn floats and flappers on 6 toilets in the Community Center. In the sanctuary Choir loft area, the baseboard was reattached and several burned out bulbs were replaced. Twenty cubic yards (= 270 bagged mulch) was spread outside the narthex, and in the prayer garden, and part of the playground areas.

Bob and Mary Keller defrosted the Youth House refrigerator. This was a big job. Bob regularly controls weeds and waters dry plants.

The Maintenance Planning Committee agreed to the 2019 top priority maintenance projects. These are to replace the 2nd 25-ton Sanctuary AC on the Sanctuary & repair the roof of the Community Center.
