PIMA NEWSLETTER

PIMA Presidents Report June 2019 Dear Members,

With June and winter just around the corner so is the end of the financial year. I would like to take this opportunity in thanking all of our committee members and employers who allow them to give up their time each month and assist in running of your PIMA. This year PIMA has completed most of the objectives that the board set out with the only outstanding item being the Apprentice promotional video highlighting our industry and what it can offer.

So our accomplishments for this year include the continued sitting of two of our committee members on IRC board, the successful running of the first barefoot bowls afternoon (this years will be held in October), the running of the Young Achiever award, well done to Robert Vidler being last year’s winner, Dinner meeting and AGM, A supervisors course that was run last year and well supported, we had a presence at the National Manufacturing Week recently held in Melbourne and of course the Charity Golf day seeing PIMA raise $8,500 being given to the Children’s Cancer Welfare Association. Our video is expected to be completed around the end of July and ready for this year’s school leavers.

The board recently meet with 1300 Apprentices, a group that find apprentices for industry. We are in the midst of discussions which look very promising so keep an eye news letters to come.

Please continue the support of PIMA as we need all of the members to play a part.

Kindest regards,

Grahame Aston

President

After going through training, businesses can participate in our “Energy Management Support and Coaching,” which helps them put this knowledge to practice, through the development of business cases, internal planning with an energy expert advisor and assistance preparing applications for the manufacturing efficiency funding program.

In fact, there is a free manufacturing workshop coming up at the end of May on energy management, metering and monitoring. If manufacturing businesses attend, they will be eligible to receive:

• a half-day site visit from an energy advisor* • project scoping assistance* • assistance with Manufacturing Efficiency Funding applications*

Additionally, businesses within the sectors (Primary metal, non-metallic minerals, plastics and chemicals, food and beverages) can undertake an energy management benchmarking process, fully funded through our program, which provides a roadmap for continual improvement of energy management within the organisation. PIMA Stand at the Melbourne Manufacturing Week:

PIMA, along with Dotmar, Comtec Australia, IMCD and Duromer Exhibited a “Polymers With Purpose” stand at the recent National Manufacturing Week Exhibition Melbourne. The combined exhibition focused on engineering polymers being a cost-effective alternative to traditional manufacturing materials and methods. Visitors were guided through the manufacturing process from raw materials, colour and additives, mould design, injection moulding machinery, automation and consultation with our industry body. With an injection moulding machine and robot in operation, visitors were able to see the complete “pellet to product” manufacturing process which also addressed questions on recycling of polymers. Many visitors passed through the exhibition with considerable interest from a wide range of manufacturing sectors. In addition, IBSA hosted an information session on training and pathways within the plastics manufacturing sector. More information can be found at the following link: https://polymerswithpurpose.com.au/

Up Coming PIMA Key Dates: Plastics Pioneers: Thursday 29th August 2019

PIMA/SPE Evening Dinner Event in conjunction with SPE at Dooley’s 4th July 2019 Further details will follow on topics, speakers and cost.

Events 16th PIMA Charity Golf Day

Was held on Friday 4th May 2019 at Bankstown Golf Club: 70 Ashford Avenue, Milperra. NSW.

PIMA charity Golf Day has been and gone and was another great success with all monies being raised going to the Children’s Cancer Welfare Association. We support this charity as 100% of the money raised goes directly to Children’s Cancer research. This year we have raised $8,500 for the charity which is a great achievement. We also ask that all players bring along a children’s toy that we donate also. Sadly, the toy count was down this year so let’s hope that we can get the toy drive back on track next year.

A big thank you all of the companies and individuals that sponsored the day and made it great, without the sponsorship we can bring you these days so again a big thank you to everyone that sponsored, helped out on the day and to everyone that played.

The day wasn’t without rain unfortunately, for most of the first 9 holes played, it rained, just enough to wet everyone down!

Congratulations to the winners on the day, special mention to John O’Brien from Plastik packaging who were victorious on the day. Not only was John part of the winning team, he won the major raffle being a weekend away at Owls Head Lodge kindly donated Neil Henderson of Astor Industries. Jack Black entertained us with many laughs echoing across the room, Sadly Serge’s wife didn’t share the laughter when he made her diamond ring disappear. Happy to report that all belongings made their way back without loss.

Keep the date again clear for next year’s game to be held on the first Friday of May.

Thanks again to all the helpers, sponsors and to everyone that attended.

Kindest regards, Grahame Aston President.
