C Our LOH Progressive Lunch Ride on New Year’s Day saw no bikes and 44 people gathering together on a drizzly 35° day at Maggie and Dave Butler’s home as we consolidated the planned stops into one. But in

true Dallas HOG fashion we weren’t going to let a dreary day ruin our annual get together. I want to thank Darla Webster for coordinating everything and our hosts Gloria & Gene Barnes (salads and appetizers), Maggie & Dave Butler (lasagna dinner) and Grada & Bruce Robison (desserts). Without their planning and efforts we would not have had such a successful event. If Papa Duck’s saying holds true, even if we ain’t riding, we’re still getting together and eating good.

The weather this time of year always presents a challenge for our calendar. When we rescheduled the chili cook-off we were three days away from the event with a high probability of frozen precipitation. By the time the original day arrived we still dealt with really cold weather but the rain didn’t move into the area until the afternoon. We try to keep the changes to a minimum but sometimes we have to make decisions with your safety in mind. With that in mind, it is important to have an email address on file with Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly that you access outside of work. And seriously consider signing up for the text message alerts for last-minute changes. If all fails and you have questions about the ride, contact the Road Captain for that ride.

With all the less than desirable weather it was no wonder that the first ride to leave the Shop this year was a large group for Mike Savage’s dinner ride to Back Country BBQ. And the following Sunday Don Tersaski’s ride to Mom’s on Main Street in Aubrey was another well-attended ride. The good weather brought out all kinds of bikes.

This year’s Party After was a well-attended affair.

The food was good and plentiful with numerous door prizes handed out. We recognized several Board and Chapter members for the past year.

This year holds the promise of a lot fun and exciting events. February we have the LOH Valentine’s Day Movie Ride and don’t worry, I’m still not allowed to help pick the movie. In March the 32nd Annual St Patty’s Day Run. The rally season kicks off in April with the Louisiana HOG Rally in West Monroe, LA and the Texas HOG Rally is in Tyler in May. We’ll have rides to both so plan on joining us.

A re you a Chapter Member? The goal of all chapters is to

ride and have fun. That can mean anything from

taking part in a large group ride to simply having a new set of

friends you can call up and ride with on a moment’s notice. It can also mean having a group of fellow riders to recommend the best roads in the area or give suggestions on how to avoid high-traffic areas on your ride to work.

The great thing about chapter membership is that you can make it be just about anything you want.

In addition to riding ideas and opportunities, chapters also offer different kinds of events and activities to get involved with (only if you want to). From monthly meetings and weekend rides/ events to big, overnight chapter rides and state H.O.G. rallies, local chapters are the wheels of Harley Owners Group.

Joining a local chapter doesn’t obligate you to attend every meeting, take part in every activity, or work as free labor to host events. If you volunteer to help with an event or you decide you want to be a chapter officer, you do have to take that commitment seriously. Your fellow chapter members will be counting on you. Chapter members should not feel burdened by an obligation they don’t want.

What it all really comes down to is, joining a local chapter is the best way to connect with other Harley riders. Chapter members become an extended family, the one you choose. And like any family, it’s always interesting.

Membership in a H.O.G. chapter is what you

make of it. You can only make it something great by joining.

Group RidingSince 1924, the AMA has protected the future

of motorcycling and promoted the motorcycle lifestyle. AMA members come from all walks of life, and they navigate many different routes on their journey to the same destination: freedom on two wheels. As the world’s largest motorcycling organization, the AMA advocates for motorcyclists’ interests in the halls of local, state and federal government, the committees of international governing organizations, and the court of public opinion.

This is there list of 17 tips for Group riding.1. The first thing is organize the ride. This can

be as informal as standing around in a parking lot, or as formal as a special meeting to hand out maps

Membership is What You Make of It

Page 6: Pigtales February 2015 Issue

and cellphone numbers.2. Riding in a group does not mean

you surrender any decision-making when it comes to your safety. Ride your own ride, and don’t go any faster than you feel comfortable going.

3. When picking your route, consider the stamina of the group, the experience of all the riders, and the limits of the motorcycles in the group. Remember. If it’s going to be a long ride, be sure to take a few breaks along the way.

4. You’ll need to communicate while on the ride, so make sure everyone knows the signals you’ll use.

5. Consider positioning the less-experienced riders immediately behind the leader. This allows the front rider to adjust the pace if necessary.

6. Ideally, the sweep rider will have a cellphone to call for help if a motorcycle is disabled, or if there has been an accident.

7. If the goal of the ride is to keep the group together, the leader should only go at the pace of the least-experienced rider

8. While riding, don’t fixate on the motorcycle in front of you. Remember your basic training. Look well through the turn to where you want to go.

9. If the group is riding faster than you are comfortable with, let the sweep rider know you’re dropping out and ride at your own pace. So you may reach your destination a few seconds behind the others, but you will get there, and that’s what’s important. Keep

in mind, it’s all about fun.10. All riders are also responsible

for making sure their motorcycles are mechanically up to the task. Before you even meet up with the group, make sure you’ve got plenty of fuel in the tank, and that you’ve taken care of all those maintenance issues.

11. If it’s going to be a large group, consider dividing the group into smaller packs. That way, if something goes wrong, you don’t have 25 motorcycles sitting on the side of a busy highway. Also, smaller groups can more easily navigate through city streets.

12. On the road, motorcyclists should have at least a 2-second cushion in front

and behind them. If you want to keep the group tight, consider a staggered formation. Leave enough room per lane so each rider can maneuver side-to-side if need be. Avoid side-by-side formations as they shrink your space cushion.

13. Trikes and sidecars should stay in the center of the lane, and should be given the same amount of cushion as if they were a car.

14. As turns get sharper, or as visibility decreases, move back to a single file formation. You’ll also want to use single file when entering or exiting a highway, at toll booths, or when roads have a rough or questionable surface.

15. At intersections where you’ve come to a stop, tighten the formation to side-by-side to take up less space. As the light turns green, or when traffic opens up, the bike on the left proceeds through the intersection first.

16. Remember we share the road with many other vehicles, and it’s against the law to block an intersection.

17. When parking, try to get the group off the roadway as quickly as possible. If you can, arrange in advance to have pull-through parking at your destination, or at the very least, make sure there is ample parking for your size group.

Greetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. As we prepare for another year

of riding, fellowship, going on adventures and making lasting memories, I first want to remind everyone to make sure your 2015 Dallas Texas Chapter membership, along with your HOG National Membership, are current so you don’t miss out on any of the fun we have planned for the coming year.

It is important we get everyone’s membership in order so we stay in compliance with the HOG National requirements for us to hold events and conduct rides. One important advantage of DHOG membership is that you will be up to date with the latest status of our rides and events.

As of February 1, only 2015 members will be receiving the weekly e-mail blasts that announce upcoming events and the scheduled rides for that week, along with any changes that affect these activities. A lot of information is relayed to the members in this manner.

As you know, the chapter rides for the last few months have been affected by the weather quite a bit

and if you are planning your week of riding with us you need to know when a ride has been postponed, cancelled or even has become a caged ride instead of on scooters.

Another important tool you can sign up for is the text program we use when there has been a change just prior to the scheduled departure of a ride or event. It is only used for last minute changes when e-mail would not be effective. For more information about the text program, please see any of the weekly e-mail blasts on how to sign up.

We have had to alter several rides

and reschedule an event here lately, mostly due to weather. But with a little advanced planning, you can avoid missing one of our get togethers and be better prepared.

So get your memberships current and don’t take a chance on being left behind because you missed an announced change.

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination,

it’s the journey!Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly

Meet Mike Welch, a Service Technician at Dallas Harley-Davidson. Mike started in late October, 2014; but if you’ve been around the dealership for a while you may recognize him. That’s because he spent six years with Dallas Harley-Davidson years ago, before leaving

and working for another metro-plex dealership, and he’s brought his talents back home. Mike’s favorite part of the job is working on the motorcycles, spending every work day doing what he enjoys. His advice to other motorcyclists? Keep up on your maintenance! When he’s not in the dealership Mike enjoys riding his 1985 Harley Davidson FXR. Mike considers himself a movie buff, and he loves the family life. He spends most of his free time with his wife and their children; two of their own (a boy and girl) and one foster child (a boy). Mike and his wife have been fostering for about a year. If you are around the dealership and see Mike make sure to say hi to this great service tech and passionate family man.

ABOUT THE SALES DEPARTMENTThe Sales Department is one of the best areas in the dealership because we get to enjoy seeing customers obtain their dream bike. More than likely, you will have heard one of our team members ask “what kind of riding do you do or are you planning on doing?” This is because our job is to assist in providing the best solution to your needs as a Harley-Davidson owner. We pride ourselves on having a wide selection of motorcycles, both new and used, so that you can choose your perfect ride!

maintenance schedule. Proper maintenance will result in years of enjoyable ownership and will protect your investment.

ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTThe Service Department is the circulatory system of the dealership — the blood flow. But from the customer’s perspective, we are the Pediatric Ward, as we are taking care of their “babies.” We keep in mind that each customer’s primary concern is his or her bike. At any given time we can have up to 100 “primary concerns” in our care. Our job is to find the balance to give each one the attention it demands. Whether it’s a repair, maintenance, or an upgrade, we want to live up to the credo our Technicians came up with — WE TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENTMaking an appointment is easy. The best way is to complete the service request form on dallashd.com and we can save you time by having most of the check-in questions answered. Another option is to call 972-270-3962 and ask to speak with one of our Service Advisors. The check-in process will take about 10 to 15 minutes so we can be certain we are addressing all of your concerns as well as notify you about some of the H-D products that may enhance YOUR ride.

EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATIONOne of the best products from Harley-Davidson is the ability to add an extended warranty to your bike at just about any time in your ownership. If you have any questions about coverage, please contact Rob Kellick, a Service Advisor, or a Finance Manager in Sales for more info. Beyond the warranty - the possibilities are nearly endless to make your ride, YOURS. Whether it is performance, appearance, or a combination of both, we are here to help you stamp the final four letters into your V.I.N. — “M-I-N-E.”
