We had fun during our lunch times!

As we only have an enrolment of 17 Year 5 girls, and many many boys, Year 5 girls and Ms. Lovett have been meeting in our lunchtime to do fun activities such as a picnic in the park, lots of talking and laughing and party games and a visit to Gelatissimo. We have connected well and we all really like each other. We now play together, sit together at lunch and have play dates with our new friends. As a bigger Year 5 group we have also been doing sport, dance and Create a Planet together. We visited Mort Bay Park for a picnic. We will do a new activity together this term as well.

CoLAS, (or Community of Leichhardt Area Schools), seeks to build a professional learning community across multiple NSW public schools, focusing on better outcomes for all. Our school is a member of CoLAS, which also includes neighbouring schools, Birchgrove PS, Nicholson St PS, Rozelle PS, Orange Grove PS, Annandale PS, Annandale Nth PS, Kegworth PS, Leichhardt PS and Sydney Secondary College - Balmain and Leichhardt Campuses. Mrs Maria Lambos is the chairperson of CoLAS, as well as chairperson of the CoLAS conference committee.

Tuesday’s Staff Development Day saw us hold our inaugural conference, #change #engage #openingdoors, focusing on differentiation and change. held at Australian Technology Park. CoLAS schools, Balmain, Birchgrove, Nicholson St, Annandale, Annandale Nth and Orange Grove attended, as well as Erskineville PS and Taverners Hill Infants School. There were 145 educators in total!

A very engaging day was planned, commencing with a strings quartet from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music upon arrival, an introduction regarding the importance of collaborating between schools from our Director for Port Jackson, Mr Rod Megahey, two keynote speakers and three workshops. We organised two keynote speakers: Dr Bem Le Hunte from UTS spoke about ‘The Future of Learning’ and Verity Firth, whose children attend Glebe PS, spoke to us about education equity. There were nine 45-minute workshops organised, with presenters from some of our schools.

Balmain Public School was well-represented, with Mr Sean Baumann (3/4 Bass) presenting on S.O.L.E. (Self-Organised Learning Environments), Ms Ariana Davis (K Dahl) and Ms Angela Curry (K Chickpeas) presenting on Investigative Learning and Ms Lynda Lovett (5 Learntils) presenting on the implementation of a whole-school Gifted and Talented policy.

chess Learn how to be a chess champion!

Coaching for students at Balmain Public School is held on Tuesdays from 1:00pm – 1:50pm.

Term 2 lessons will commence on 3rd May, 2016.

Chess is the world’s most loved board game. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving

skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment! Activities include group lessons on a

demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games, with personal feedback from the coach.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, solving puzzles, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players

strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can email [email protected] for a copy of the enrolment form. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on

(02) 9745 1170.
