The Pig on the Pond event is an annual community festival held at the Waterfront Park in Clermont each spring with the proceeds benefitting south Lake county high school students. Started in 1998 to raise much needed monies for area scholarships, the event has grown into a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. A link to the Community Foundation of South Lake was developed and the Pig on the Pond Educational Fund was created to provide 4-year college scholar-ships to deserving South Lake high school students. The mission of the Pig on the Pond organization - to provide educational scholarships and other support to our local students, positioning them to lead suc-cessful and impactful lives in their chosen communi-ties – is successfully reflected in the number of young lives that have been impacted. Over an 18-year period, more than $400,000 has been awarded to 413 students in South Lake county, with11 students cur-rently in the program.
In addition to awarding scholarships, the Pig on the Pond event enables more than 20 local non-profit organizations to conduct fundraising efforts during the 3-day event at the Waterfront Park. The Pig on the Pond organization also supports teachers in the south Lake area with a Teachers Appreciation Breakfast each August, and provides each scholarship recipi-ent with a mentor to help guide them through their college career.
Graduating high school students living full time in south Lake county are encouraged to apply for the scholarship which provides up to four years of finan-cial support. This year, Pig on the Pond will award a total of $10,000 in scholarships to new recipients, who will each be eligible to receive a maximum of $2,500 per year, for up to four years of college. Applications are administered by the Community Foundation of South Lake and are available on-line at www.cfslc.
org/scholarships. Final scholarship applications must be received by March 16, 2016. Finalists will be noti-fied and candidate interviews will follow.
The organization’s vision for the future is to have a fund capable of providing scholarships so that the proceeds from the event can be used to grow the level of support enabling the organization to keep pace with tomorrow’s needs. A contribution to the Pig on the Pond Forever Fund is an excellent way for people and organizations to truly have a lasting impact on the community now and for future genera-tions. To donate, visit www.pigonthepond.org.
