First thing: training• Trained and devoted farmers in Lower Fungom are our main

guarantee that the project will be successful.

Where do we train farmers?• In the School of Agriculture of the National Polytechnic Bambui. This is

the best School in Cameroon for farmers!• Training will take place from September 13 to October 4, 2015.

What will they learn?• How to best run a piggery and take care of pigs of every age• How to do marketing of pigs and manage finances

Page 7: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Who will be trained in Bambui?• One person per village• At least half of the trainees must be women• All of them must be willing and skilled at sharing with others what

they have learned• There is a procedure to be followed, it is illustrated at the end of

this presentation and in Annex 3. Please ask Mr. Ikom to show this to you.

• Each Village Committee has to notify the name of the selected trainee by September 10, 2015. Failure to do so will mean the village will have no trainee.

What happens next?

• Phase 2 of the project is the construction of ONE pig pen and the introduction of the first batch of pigs and piglets.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 8

Page 9: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Where will the pig pen be located?

• Close to a market place• Easily reachable by truck• Availability of water• Not too close to people’s houses (especially of

Muslims!)• Probably the first pig pen will be built in Abar

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 9

Page 10: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Who will own the first pig pen?

• It will be property of the “Pigs for Pikin” project;• It will not be property of the village in whose land

it will be built, be it Abar or any other village.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 10

Page 11: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

What will its purpose be?• It will serve as a hub for reproduction of pigs.• This is essential for later peopling of other pig

pens in Lower Fungom• Without this pig pen the project cannot start.

Page 12: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Who will build it?

• The Pigs For Pikin project will cover expenses for materials that are not available in Lower Fungom, like nails etc.

• Labour will be provided by the trainees who went to Bambui plus other voluntary workers

• All villages will have to provide timber and assistance during the construction

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 12

Page 13: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

When will the big pig pen be built?

• Soon after the trainees come back from Bambui (around October 5, 2015)

• It will take about one week to complete the construction.

• The pig pen will have to be ready to receive pigs by October 20th, 2015 at the latest.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 13

Page 14: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

And then?

• We will transfer a good number of pigs and piglets, along with feeding and medicines for them.

• At that point, by the end of October, the first pig farm will be fully functional!

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 14

Page 15: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

And in a few months…

• If there will be no problems in the management of the pig farm, piglets will start to be born around March, 2016.

• These new piglets will be kept in the big farm for some time and then transferred to other pig pens…

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 15

Page 16: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

…other pig pens?

• This will be a very important moment of the project

• We plan to build 3 more pig pens in Lower Fungom, smaller than the first one.

• Each of these smaller pig pens will have to be managed by a group of villages, that will collaborate among themselves in doing this.

• The project will contribute nails for the construction of these pens, plus pigs’ feeding and medicines for some months.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 16

Page 17: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Where will the smaller pig pens be located?

• Like the first one, close to a market place, to the road, not too close to people’s houses.

• The final locations will be decided by the Village Committees and the Steering Committee.

• It is fundamental that villages agree on forming 3 separate groups, each of which will take care of one small pig pen.

Page 18: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Our proposal

• Our suggestion is that:– Villages should form groups of about the same

population size. So, Koshin and Fang could form a group by themselves as they are more populated than the other villages. Other groups may be formed by 4 or 5 villages if these are small (like Ngun, Biya, Ajumbu, etc)

– Groups should be made of neighbouring villages– Villages forming a group should be in good

relations between each other.

Page 20: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

Anyway, it will be up to your Village Committees

to find the best way to go about this.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 20

Page 21: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

What is sure is…

… that the success of this project depends on your will to

COLLABORATE between villages.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 21

Page 22: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

We will bring pigs and knowledge…

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 22

Page 23: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

…close to a group of villages…

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 23

Page 24: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

…to support education.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 24

Page 25: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

This is possible only if you cooperate among yourselves

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 25

Page 26: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

So it will bring more and more…

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 26

Page 27: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

But if you will not cooperate in looking after the pigs and the pig pen

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 27

Page 28: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

And if you will not protect all this from bad people

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 28

Page 29: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

You will be the ones losing the most

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 29

Page 30: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

So be smart and do your best to cooperate with other villages and to

promote cooperation.

A mango tree takes a long time to become big and bear fruits, but it can

die in half an hour if there is fire.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 30

Page 31: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

So…

• As you have seen this is a BIG project that will last for LONG TIME.

• To be successful we need to be – COLLABORATIVE WITH EACH OTHER– VERY WELL ORGANIZED

• The next part is dedicated to how we will organize ourselves.

Training

• Training of farmers is very important in this project

• We want to be as equal as possible in giving access to training

• A 3-week intensive course on pig farming will be held in Bambui from September 13 to October 4, 2015.

• One person per village will go there

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 42

Page 43: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

How to select trainees

1. The Village Committee informs each quarter that they have to select one person as their candidate for going to the training. This person should be a farmer, relatively young, literate, and good at collaborating with the others. Women are especially welcome as candidates.

05/02/23 Pigs For Pikin project explained to Lower Fungom beneficiaries 43

Page 44: Pig for Pikin presentation-25jul2015

How to select trainees

2. All the candidates from all the quarters hold a meeting with the Village Committee. During this meeting, they will choose one among them who will go to Bambui for the training. It is understood that this person will have to be trusted by the others that he/she will be willing to share with them what he/she has learned during the training.
