Thank you for picking up Pierce County Parks and Recreation’s Winter/Spring activity guide full of a variety of programs, activities and events for the entire family. We are pleased to offer recreation programs for all ages and abilities. Take a few minutes and peruse through this guide to find enrichment activities, fitness programs, outdoor recreation and trips, adult/youth sports and camps, ice skating or hockey, and facility rental opportunities.

State Sales Tax Compliance:In compliance with WAC 458-20-183, Pierce County Parks and Recreation Services is now including Washington State tax in specified programs. Programs subject to the new retail sales tax will include youth and adults sports leagues and tournaments, recreation center user fees and other fitness related programs. Program prices that are affected will be advertised as “Washington sales tax included” after the fee.

Community Events

Companionship has another Glow-Out Dance Party planned to celebrate the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign. We will be working with North Star Elementary PTA to bring you a Glow-Out dance party. Every participant receives glow sticks to dance with your favorite songs played by a great DJ. Additional games and crafts will be offered in a quiet area.

Spread the Word to End the Word is a national campaign to end the use of R-Word and bullying. This event is designed to

promote positive language and friendships.





Community Events

Pierce County Parks and Recreation is responsible for parks in the unincorporated areas of Pierce County. We are not designating specific parks in our system, but rather looking for groups of 10 or more people to select a park to “appreciate” on April 26.

Dogs, cats, hamsters, and kids of all ages are invited to our first ever Companionship Pet Party.

Pets of all species and sizes are welcome to participate in pet crafts, games, agility courses, and a talent competition.

Each pet and pet owner will receive a goodie bag plus a photo to take home at the end of the event.

Pets must be up to date on shots, on a leash or in a carrier and accustomed to crowds. No aggressive pets of any kind.

All participants and pets will meet in Building #B3.

Seattle Underground Tour & Pike PlaceThe underground tour is a guided tour beneath Seattle’s sidewalks and streets. See the underground passages that were old downtown’s main roadways and first floor store fronts. Outdoor Adventures

Skagit Eagle Watch Nature’s splendor as few have seen it. Each winter, up to 300 Bald Eagles congregate in the Skagit Preserve. These magnificent and endangered birds are accustomed to seeing only the occasional river boat in their protected habitat, so sightings are frequent. With wingspans up to seven feet, the eagle is truly majestic at close range.

You’ll float calmly and comfortably with other enthusiasts in astoundingly beautiful scenery, watching our National Symbol feeding on the banks, soaring above or perched only a few yards away. Guides are experienced eagle watchers. Trip includes all rafting equipment.

Birthday parties are available year round, Friday-Monday during the public sessions. Adults receive a discount skate fee of $6.25 (+ tax) unless included in the party package.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the skate session to assure group’s skate rental. Adult supervision is required throughout the party. Do not leave personal belongings unattended in party room. Please inform your party guests to identify themselves at the door to avoid being charged general admission. Bring your own birthday candles.

Private Skate Instruction AvailablePrivate figure skating instruction is available by contacting Kathy Wainhouse, Skating Director, at (253) 798-4042. A private lesson request form may also be obtained at Sprinker Center. Private lesson fees are paid directly to the instructor while the cost for the ice time session (when the lesson is given) is paid directly to the ice rink prior to the session/lesson.


Ice SkatingSnowman Building ContestSun, Dec. 29 4:00 - 6:00 pm

$20/group (all groups up to 10 people max). Pre-register early to secure a space, space is limited to 20 groups. Get your team and props together now for our on-ice snowman building contest. Each entered team will have limited snow and 45 minutes to complete their snowman. Each team will be responsible to return all props supplied by Sprinker and will need to collect any personal belongings after the event.

There will be NO ice skating during this contest. Each team member will be given a coupon for FREE admission for another ice skating session at Sprinker! Winners will be awarded at the end of the session.

Speciality ClassesThe following series of outstanding programs have been designed for the beginning recreational skater to the highly competitive figure skater under the auspices of U.S. Figure Skating and the Ice Skating Institute (ISI).

Ice-Dancing ClassBeginning, Intermediate, and High Levels.

This class is for all levels of dancing, from Introduction to Dance to Gold Dances. Dances are taught in a group and skaters are given the opportunity to learn many different levels of dance. Skaters must have passed Freestyle 1. Includes 30 minute practice 12-1:15 p.m.

Ice Skating

Registration Information:Levels of Instruction Include: PreSkate 1, 2, 3 & 4, Beginning 1 & 2, PreAlpha, Alpha 1 & 2, Beta 1 & 2, Gamma 1 & 2, Delta 1 & 2, Beginning Freestyle, Freestyle 1, 2, & 3, and Beginning Freestyle 4.

Beginning skaters shoud register for Beginning 1. Pre-Skate and Beginning skaters are evaluated during the first 2 weeks and placed in the appropriate class level. PreSkate and Beginning skaters start class off the ice for weeks 1 and 2.

At the end of the 7 or 8 week session, skaters will be tested and may earn a ribbon/patch before advancing to the next level.

• Pre-Registration is required. There must be at least 6 skaters in order to hold a class, otherwise the class may be canceled or combined with other levels when possible.

• New Skaters - Registration begins December 12 for Session 3 and February 27 for Session 4.

• Returning Skaters - It is recommended that returning skaters wait to register after their skills test on the last day of class.

The program cost includes admission to the public session (on day of lesson only), skate rental, instructional fee, testing fee, ribbon or patch, and a pass good for two complimentary admissions to any regualr price public skating session held during the 8 week lesson period.

*ISI Membership: Required for ALL Learn-To-Skate participants. Membership card or number is required at the time of registration: $15 membership September 1-August 31; $10 membership March 1-August 31.

As a member of ISI, students receive an ISI membership card, quarterly magazine, secondary insurance and nationally registered skills tests. Allow 4-6 weeks from session start date for membership benefits to become effective (i.e. secondary medical coverage). As students progress the various levels, they have the opportunity to experience local, district and national competitions available to skaters of all ages, starting with the beginner’s basic Alpha test and ranging upward to the highest tests. These competitions are non-qualifying events. Emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment. ISI and Sprinker are dedicated to providing quality recreational ice skating programs for the community.

Learn-To-Skate ProgramAs a member of the Ice Skating Institute’s weSKATE program, our basic skills classes are designed for the recreational skater with teach-ing, testing, and award ribbons/patches available for different levels of achievement in basic skills and freestyle.

Ice Skating

Limited Class Space Class enrollment is limited and determined on a first come first served basis. Sprinker prefers to limit enrollment to 12 students per class (9 for PreSkate 1 classes) whenever possible. Similar class levels may be combined to avoid canceling classes with low attendance.

Skating AttirePreSkate and beginning skaters are encouraged to wear an All-Sport safety helmet. Skaters should wear gloves and warm layered clothing.

Learn-To-Skate Lesson ScheduleThe Learn-To-Skate program is a series of 7 or 8 one-half hour lessons for children and adults.

Youth Hockey: American Development Model (ADM)This program will focus on the skating skills used for hockey. Skaters will learn a variety of skills ranging from forward skating to backward skating on one and two feet, stick handling, and some game instruction.

Rental Gear: $50 per session (includes cost of cleaning) with a $100 refundable deposit if all the equipment is returned in good condition. Gear quantities are limited and therefore will be distributed at the fitting date or after the first class. Gear may be rented out for one series only and must be turned in prior to the start of the next series to receive full deposit refund.

Package includes all gear with the exception of supporter with cup/or pelvic protector, internal mouth guard, full coverage throat protector/neck guard, hockey skates and sticks.

When: Broomball is offered Friday and Saturday nights after 10 p.m. most nights; please call for availability.

The game of broomball is very similar to regular hockey; however, players hit a rubber ball with short-handled, plastic brooms instead of hitting pucks with a stick. Tennis shoes are worn instead of skates.

Broomball has become very popular especially for groups such as social and civic clubs and organizations or churches looking for new and intriguing activities.

Click It, Don’t Kick It! - SprinkerHave you tried traditional dog training methods without getting the results you want? Perhaps it is time to try something new. This class is taught by A.B.I. certified trainer, Jon Borcherding. It is an introduction to the fun, exciting training method known as “clicker training”.

This method is effective on dogs of all sizes and ages. It is especially useful with dogs that are fearful or anxious when confronted with traditional training tools like chain collars, voice corrections, etc.

Tae Kwon Do/HapkidoLearn self control, discipline, respect, and economy of motion while learning martial arts. This martial arts class teaches Olympic style Tae Kwon Do as well as Hapkido (the art of using pressure points and joint locks).

The Washington Recreation and Park Association sponsors this basketball skills competition which involves shooting from five “Hot Spots” marked on one half of the basketball court. The competition tests a young athlete’s all-around basketball skills within a series of one-minute rounds.

The youth with the highest accumulated number of points is declared the winner in his or her age group. Winners are eligible to participate in the state competition. No pre-registration, no charge, just show up the day of the event.

The games and activities focus on cooperation rather than competition and they can be played almost anywhere with little or no equipment. In cooperative games, no one is eliminated. Pierce County Parks and Recreation proudly offers “Companionship,” a specialized recreation program designed to provide recreation and leisure opportunities for individuals of all abilities and their families.

Our goal is to assist the participants in finding and maintaining strong friendships while playing and trying new things.

Events are held all over Pierce County from Eatonville to Gig Harbor and everywhere in between. Those participating in the program on an ongoing basis determine the activities. In order for us to keep providing these really fun and exciting events, we need all participants to preregister for the activities they would like attend.

Rainier Room: This newly remodeled space, located on the second floor, provides a northern territorial view of the complex plus views overlooking the indoor tennis and skating rink. The mezzanine leading into the room is used as an “art walk” with several paintings and sculptures open for public viewing. Wifi available in all meeting rooms. This is our largest meeting space and includes a separate kitchen area. Capacity: 200 seated, includes ice machine refrigerator and sink/heating cabinet available upon request.

This 60-acre majestic complex is home to many uses including the Pierce County Fair, Highland Games, equestrian shows, scouting events, car shows, quarter midget track racing competitions, and casual recreation.

Frontier Lodge:Frontier Lodge, our newest building, is very popular for classes, weddings, receptions, and company parties. You can utilize one or two rooms for all your activities.

• The main room (Side A) can host 200 seated, 140 around tables, and features a large stone hearth with gas fireplace.

Rental fee with kitchen “A” is $125/hour. Meeting fee is $75/hour, no food.

• The smaller room (Side B) hosts 120 seated, 72 around tables, great for small meetings or receptions.

Rental fee with kitchen “B” is $75/hour. Meeting fee is $50/hour, no food or kitchen.

Agricultural Facilities: Display buildings, arenas, and animal buildings for small animal shows and vet clinics. Fee ranges from $10/hour to $50/day, plus deposit.

Equestrian Facilities: Two horse barns with 88 stalls, warm up arena, and a (200 ft. x 150 ft.) main show arena. Arena fee is $165/day + $200 deposit; stall fee is $10/day collected by group. Barn deposit is $300.

Pierce County Parks and Recreation has recently become steward of the Chambers Creek properties now known as Chambers Creek Regional Park. This 930-acre site includes over two miles of saltwater shoreline, two-and-a-half miles of urban creek and canyon, and breathtaking mountain and Puget Sound views.

Come visit us and walk on the series of public trails throughout the park. Trails range from ¼ mile to 2 miles in length and vary in difficulty. Play a round of golf at Chambers Bay Golf Course or dine in the restaurant. Fly your kite or throw a Frisbee in the Central or North Meadow.

Take a walk on the beach made possible by the opening of the bridge in September of 2010. Bring your dog to play in the temporary off leash dog area located in the Central Meadow or take them to the permanent off leash area located on the beach just south of the pedestrian overpass.

Central MeadowCentral Meadow at Pierce County's Chambers Creek Regional Park features an 11-acre manicured lawn with panoramic views that include Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and Chambers Bay Golf Course.

It is an ideal location for planned outdoor events such as family reunions, weddings, and parties as well as a staging area for walks and runs on the trail system at the Chambers Creek Regional Park.

Damage deposits and fees vary based on type and time of usage.

PlayfieldsThe park has two multi-purpose playfields available for hourly rental. The playfields are available from dawn to dusk. Alco-hol is not permitted.

Reservations are required for regularly scheduled activity on the playfields. This includes non-league sporting events and private coaching sessions. Soccer goals are provided for reserved field time only. Rental rates are $25 per hour.

Casual use is available on a first come first serve basis. No guarantees of availability.

Medical InsuranceAll participants in the Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department’s recreation division programs should have their own medical insurance to cover any injuries sustained while participating in any activity sponsored by the division. Pierce County will not be financially responsible for any medical expenses.

Bad WeatherIn the event of severe weather conditions, such as snowstorms, it is the participant’s responsibility to contact the center regarding the status of classes, meetings, or activities. Pierce County Parks and Recreation staff are often unable to contact everyone individually regarding these unfortunate but unforeseen circumstances.

Photo PolicyPierce County Parks and Recreation staff may videotape or take photos of participants in programs and special events, or people in or on park properties. Those photos may be used for promoting our programs, classes, events, in print, for TV, or on the website.

General Refund PolicyA request for a full refund will be granted only if your request is presented before the first class begins. After classes have started your refund request will be issued on a pro-rated basis, however no refunds will be issued after the start of the 3rd class. Refund requests must be presented 24 hours prior to one day seminars/workshops.

We regret that refunds cannot be made for programs, classes, clinics or trips consisting of 4 or less sessions unless approved by the Department. Please call for specific program refund policies.
