Meet Winston-Salem’s Newest Band: Easy Street ApothecaryBy Sara E. Butner

On a recent humid Friday night, families

leaving downtown Winston-Salem’s BB&T Ballpark could be forgiven for wondering where they’d ended up. Even in a city where live music performances can appear in unexpected places, the sound drifting out of nearby Second and Green Tavern was more Crescent City than Camel City. The band was Easy Street Apothecary, and they’ve been entertaining audiences at Second and Green each week all summer long. The free series of live shows continues in August every Friday night. The band’s name purposely evokes a long-lost time and place where musicians took the time to explore unconventional arrangements and write songs that told a story. The band actually started out as 1920’s-style buskers, says vocalist/lead guitar player Tommy Jackson, before gradually adding electric instruments to their all-acoustic set up. The result is a throwback sound that’s still irresistibly modern. “Easy Street Apothecary is what might happen if Paul Simon and the Wood Brothers met the Black Keys and the Squirrel Nut Zippers in a New Orleans funk venue,” Jackson says. The band’s live shows mix originals (they recorded a six-song EP last year) with

covers by the aforementioned Wood Brothers and Squirrel Nut Zippers, as well as laid-back spins on classic blues songs. As long as the focus is on strong song-writing and highlighting each band member’s skills, anything goes. It’s the band’s members that make the sound, a unique synthesis of musical influences that reflect each musician’s background. Tommy Jackson grew up

in the Appalachian Mountains but studied jazz at the University at New Orleans. Carlos Tolbert (saxophone/clarinet/flute) hails from New York City, where he Continued on Page 8

played in funk and jazz bands. Bass player TJ Holt, from Winston-Salem, has a background in both bluegrass and punk. Finally, percussionist/drummer Daniel Jackson (who is also Tommy’s brother) brings a hard backbeat and world-groove style to the band, combining unconventional percussion instruments with the drumset to add a rarely-heard organic sound to familiar tunes.ESA has also composed original music for a local theatre production and a public TV show. For more information about the band and upcoming shows, like Easy Street Apothecary on Facebook (http://on.fb.me/Ur2oRh).

The 2014 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro A 75 YEAR HISTORYBy Brian Watkins

It’s time to hit the green in August!

The Wyndham Championship celebrates its 75th anniversary August 11-17 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.Founded in 1938, the Wyndham Championship is the sixth oldest event on the PGA Tour. Previously it had been known as GGO (Greater Greensboro Open), the KGGO (Kmart Greater

Greensboro Open), the GGCC (Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic) and the CCG (Chrysler Classic of Greensboro) throughout the years, eventually coming to be called the Wyndham Championship in 2007. This year’s Championship celebrates 75 years of golf in North Carolina, for which 17 former winners have made it into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The Wyndham Championship enjoys some other unique history, including seeing Sam Snead acquire the most wins in a single tournament, being the first in the Old South to invite an African American to play, and being the first and only Championship where a major league baseball player won the PGA tour. Each decade has celebrated some outstanding triumphs, and the Wyndham Championship now has even more ways

for visitors to enjoy the game. The Legends Club is one of the newest additions to the event. Located behind the 10th green, it features both open-air and air conditioned boxes to enjoy the Championship. The luxurious accommodations are a great way to spend the day or treat corporate partners and clients. Upscale food and beverages will be available throughout each day of the Championship. As well as being a wonderful source of entertainment each year, the Wyndham Championship also contributes charitably to a number of community organizations. The theme of giving back is central to the event, and each year Wyndham Worldwide partners with a variety of not-for-profits throughout the state of North Carolina, helping to build awareness to their various causes. The organization is proud to support and enrich the lives of disadvantaged children, and is also offering complimentary admission to active military personnel with valid identification. The Championship schedule is available on the website, as well as information for how readers can become involved with charity work or even volunteer. The Wyndham Championship PGA, the Greater Hickory Kia Classic at Rock Barn, and SAS Championship Champions Tour have partnered to allow volunteers at any of these events attend the other two for free as well.

For more information about the 2014 schedule and how you can become involved, visit wyndhamchampionship.com. Readers can also hear about volunteer , sponsorship, and ticket opportunities by calling (336) 379-1570.

by Teddy Burriss - Networking StrategistNetworking events are not Business Card Swap Meets.

Some people buy business cards, dole them out like candy and get giddy when they have to order more. These folks think leading with their business cards is the best way to get business. Many of these folks believe their business cards are proudly sitting on the desks of the people they were given to. Look on your desk, how many cards do you have proudly displayed there?

I’ve met people at networking events who reached out to me with their business card in hand as I reached out to shake their hand hello.

Attending a networking event without your business cards is often considered a major failure. People will talk about you, “He’s here and he has no business cards with him. Bless his little soul. What a shame.” You almost want to crawl into a corner and weep quietly.

I worked for a guy who cheered when I came to the office with a bunch of business cards collected while networking. He would slap me on the back and say, “Good job, now put those cards in the system.” I imagined him sitting in his office smiling, listening to the clatter of my keyboard as I entered the business card information into our CRM system.

He cheered almost as loudly when I told him I was nearly out of my business cards. I imagined him on the phone saying gleefully, “He ran out of cards again,” as he ordered more cards for me.

I have learned from my mistakes of the past.

Leading with your business card when networking does not work. Lead with yourself when networking, now this works.

Say hello to someone new at your next networking event. Ask engaging questions like, “What brought you here today?” or “Who else have you met here?”

Use Dale Carnegie principle #7, “Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.” Ask questions so that you learn as much as you can in the short time you get to talk with this new person. As you focus on your networking partner, they are going to want to know about you as well. If the conversation goes well and you find that there could be a benefit to meet again, for you or your networking (Continued on Pg 26)

partner, say this: “Wow, I’ve enjoyed

our chat. Can we exchange contact information and do this again soon?”

Now you can whip out business cards and exchange them with each other.

You just made a new connection. It’s a connection between you and the person you met. Store your new contact’s information in your personal contacts database. I use a Google Apps for all of the connections I make in life, career, business and community. They are my connections.

Send an email to your new connection letting them know you enjoyed meeting and talking with them. If appropriate and agreed upon, follow up on any actions you agreed to do.

Lead with yourself, make the conversation all about your networking contact and follow up with business cards only if there is an interest and desire to continue a conversation. Often there will be if you lead with yourself.

Though it’s a term that’s been around for many years, it can be difficult for

a business owner to nail down exactly what SEO is and the impact it has on their business. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and generally refers to the process of increasing traffic to the business’ website and generating more customers. As Tom Veltri of SEO Rocket points out, over 40% of search traffic these days comes from mobile devices. That’s expected to pass 50% in 2015. Not only does this affect the way sites need to be designed, but the ability to search from anywhere has increased the sheer number of searches as well. It’s more important than ever for business sites to rank well in local searches, but how is that accomplished? The most successful SEO campaigns blend presentation with the technical back end. Well-designed sites are visually appealing, easy to navigate, and serve the information a user is looking for quickly. Sites that are confusing, don’t read well, or have an uninteresting look don’t tend to hold a user’s attention, conversely. “If you write strictly for the search engines,” Veltri explains, “you will not only suffer more in the rankings with Google’s new algorithms but you will likely lose your visitor with copy that isn’t quality or of any practical value.”Business owners also need to be conscious of outdated technologies that can detract from ranking efforts as well as the user experience. “Flash content, frames, and some database strategies add function to the site but search engines won’t be able to read them properly,” explains Dawn Mitchell of G4G Interactive. “That or visitors won’t be able to view them on certain devices.” Apple devices like iPhones and iPads, for example, don’t display Flash content. Incorporating these types of elements can

lead to a poor user experience, and can confuse search engines regarding what a site is about. With the more recent focus on local results, businesses need to ensure accurate, consistent information across directories like Yelp. “Maps and reviews are also important,” says Terri Watkins of Crutchfield Advertising. “Local maps results are often the first thing users see, and a site’s reviews and overall rating can be the difference between an interested click and being passed over for the next business.”While one can make a site easier to index and more likely to rank well for certain search terms, no one can guarantee top placements. “Business owners love the warm fuzzies of a guarantee, but if that guarantee is a number one ranking, run as fast as you can.”

Believe it or not, every company has a digital brand these days. If they

don’t, then they probably won’t be in business for long. With technology being so accessible and fitting into the palm of our hands, business owners have to adjust to the changing times. But how do you keep up? As a business owner, you now have to stay current with your industry, your competition, your team, your finances, the law and how it affects your HR department, and now Google and Facebook too. Wow! If that feels overwhelming, that’s because it is. Stop trying to do everything and find someone you can trust to give you advice on organizations you should leverage, to handle the responsibilities outside of the day to day for your company. In today’s market that is the only way to grow. Some quick tips on finding a company that can help you control your digital brand:1) Look for a firm who practices what they preach. If they are not drinking the Kool-Aid they are trying to sell you, then why would you take advice from them?2) Look for someone who is in it to help you. Every business is in business to make money, but the ones that want to see you succeed will find a way to help you regardless of financial ability. 3) Know a thing or two. Take

a class, attend a free seminar, or send someone in your company to do so. Knowing what you are looking at and understanding the lingo makes it harder for a firm to pull the wool over your eyes and snowball you into a bad business decision. 4) Track everything. Use call tracking numbers to record incoming calls so you know not only where that prospect is calling from, but also that your staff is doing an effective job on the phone. This will help with company structure and compensation over time.5) Don’t settle on the first choice. Get a second, third, and fourth opinion before purchasing from a firm. And don’t go for the cheapest. Do a fair “apples to apples” comparison to be sure this firm is what they say and will do what you need. Budgets are important, but doing it right the first time can save you thousands of headaches, heartaches, and dollars.6) Lastly, make sure the firm’s culture is in line with yours. If the company cultures match, there will be a smoother working relationship and you can trust that your brand is being represented the way you would do it yourself, if you could.
