The Bridge Educational Trust The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established

in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the

Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objects of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at school, college, university or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered. The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose, after normal education has been interrupted. During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career. Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held three times a year, normally in February, June and September. Applications should be received at least two weeks before the meeting at which they are to be considered. Please check the date of the next meeting, and the closing date for applications on the Trust website at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk. Those wishing to apply can complete an application form online, or request a form by emailing the Trust Administrator at [email protected] or by writing to the Trust c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL. feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Cars

The scheme continues to be very successful.

During the July/August/September quarter we have provided 20 trips, our volunteer drivers have covered 230 miles, helping 13 different customers to attend essential medical appointments

From our pool of 12 drivers we have fulfilled all but 3 journeys. For those journeys the Cerne Abbas scheme stepped in to help, and likewise, we have assisted on 2 occasions when Cerne Abbas could not fulfil a request.

Proof that working together is the way forward.

More drivers always needed.

Hedgehogs

As the nights draw in at this time of year many of us look forward to

the celebration of Bonfire Night. I remember as a child, spending weeks

collecting stuff to build our bonfire, then on the night it was lit having no

thought for the creatures that may have been sheltering inside it. We just

didn't realise that anything would be in there.

Now we know that Hedgehogs and other animals could very well be

inside the bonfire! Hedgehogs are a endangered species. We are very

lucky to still have some living in the Piddle Valley and so we should do

all we can to protect them.

So Please build your Bonfire on the day your going to burn it. Enjoy

your evening and be safe!

News, comings and goings in the valley ~~~~~~~~~ Alton Pancras

AP Centenarian Lt.Col. Rex Goddard’s many achievements include 30 years as Parochial Church Council (PCC) treasurer, the first treasurer of the Alton Pancras Trust from 1989 and later its chairman and more, bringing to the valley the skills developed as a Head of Mathematics at Epsom College. His career details are on-line, but he should not be mistaken for the Rex Goddard of the Goddard Space Flight Centre. Or should he?

AP The Harvest Service collection amounted to £148 which was donated to the Dorset Wildlife Trust.

AP Alan Arnold and his wife from Melbourne visited our church in their quest to discover whether he was related to the John Arnold who died here in 1655 and is commemorated in our churchyard. His 8xgreat grandfather Thomas Arnold married at Hilton in 1656 and the following year sought refuge on Guernsey. We have a Thomas, then of Alton Australis (south part of Alton Pancras) who appears in the 1664 Hearth Tax returns. Any information to [email protected]

AP And finally….this will be my last contribution as Alton Pancras representative in PV News and Views, thus a successor will be needed to keep our village “in the news” from the Jan/Feb edition, deadline 10 November. I was ‘recruited’ at a News and Views social evening back when then-editor and prolific writer Murial Pike overheard me saying that I was at the time ghost-writing from a collection of wartime Letters-from-the-Front whose descendant could not bring herself to read them but wanted someone to record/summarise their contents. From that meeting evolved Murial’s decision to get someone from each village to write a column as her local reporter. Ironically my current next-door neighbour is former News & Views editor, Heather Bland.

Local Reporter stands down

As you will have read in Colin Dean’s piece, he has decided to retire from his position as Alton Pancras roving reporter for the News and Views. I would like to take this opportunity to put on record the thanks of village residents past and present during the time Colin has reported village news so assiduously and not without a degree of humor from time to time. Colin, your quarterly updates will be missed.


As Colin has decided to stand down the opportunity arises for someone else to take up this extremely worthwhile role. As the News and Views is published 6 times each year and a piece is required in each issue detailing village events, comings and goings and any other items about the village that might interest its residents and the wider valley community. Should you be interested in taking up this role, please feel free to contact me in order that I can coordinate. Piddlehinton’s Memorial Tree

On 15th September a small ceremony was held in Piddlehinton bridge to plant a rowan tree which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. The event was arranged by Pam Lock.

About a dozen people attended. The tree was blessed by Father Roger and Bin Roy said a few words about the 57 Piddlehinton men who served in the war. Seventeen of them lost their lives.

Some verse from a song were also read. This song was sung at the annual Armistice Day dinners held at West Lodge from 1919 to 1938. All Piddlehinton men who served in the war were at these dinners which were hosted by Col. Belgrave (father-in-law of the late Susan Belgrave).

He composed the words, but the tune is not known. The words are given below.

The men of Piddlehinton are the subject of my song I made the whole thing up myself and so it won’t be long I’m not much of a poet, so the rhymes are mostly wrong Heigh Ho, Diddle Diddle Do The men of Piddlehinton and the Piddlehinton men. When Germany began the war, the army was quite small They said we want three million men to come and join the ball The men of Piddlehinton are the finest of them all Heigh Ho, quite the best you know The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. Some joined the Dorset Regiment and some the Yeomanry Some joined the Army Service Corps and some they went to sea And some of them were Sappers too and some Artillery Heigh Ho, every sort of show The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. Before they sent them overseas, they all went off by train They sent them to a cosy place, they called it Salisbury Plain They learnt to march, to dig, to dodge the major and the rain.


Heigh Ho, very wet they got The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. Then some they went to India and some they went to France To Palestine or Mespot to teach the Turks to dance And some they got to Germany, they called it “mauvais chance” Heigh Ho, round the world they go The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. Salonika was hot and cold, Palestine cold and hot In Mespot were dust and flies but billets there were not In France were billets, girls and wine but mud and shells a lot. Heigh Ho, sun rain and snow The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. And some did not come home again, we think of them today But those who did come back go on the same old way We eat and drink and sleep and wake and love and work and play Heigh Ho, on and on we go The men of Piddlehinton, the Piddlehinton men. And once a year we all meet here as friends and comrades too To talk in time of peace about the times we all went through I hope that all of us may long continue so to do Heigh Ho, here’s good luck to you. News from the Green

Here I am writing the final news from The Green of 2019 for the November/December edition of News & Views. As we come into the final couple of months can I take this opportunity to thank all of our Trustees and volunteers for their hard work and effort during this year, not only keeping The Green in good order and safe, but also putting on fundraising events to raise vital funds. Thanks must also go to our supporters who donate through our Friends of the Green scheme. Without all of your efforts we would not have this wonderful, and free, open space which is our Millennium Green.

I would also like to thank Nick and Barry of Greendayz for their sterling efforts in keeping The Green mowed and trimmed. Thankfully not having to cope with the serious weather of 2018. Thanks also to the News & Views editorial team for all their efforts in spreading the word through our community magazine of events and news from The Green. Thank you one and all.


Even given the threat of rain, the Annual Rounders took place on the 22nd September and was very well attended. As ever our young people (and those not so young!) did us proud by continuing the match during a brief but very heavy downpour. Refreshments were served, along with lots of laughter and competitiveness.

We have two very important events coming up which not only raise funds for The Green but also provide an opportunity for the whole community, with friends and family, to come together:

• Friday 8 November - PUDS & Quiz Night (with a very short AGM) + Bar in Piddlehinton Village Hall from 7:30 p.m. Tickets £6 from any Trustee (contact details on The Green notice board or Village notice board at the Hall).

• Saturday 7 December - Millennium Green Christmas Sale, Piddlehinton Village Hall - 10:00 - 12:30. Very popular event with stalls, refreshments and raffle. Donation of cakes for cake stall would be very much appreciated. See poster in News & Views.

Finally, I mentioned earlier that we have a Friends of The Green Scheme where, for an annual minimum donation of £5 per person you too can become a FRoG. We now have stocks of diaries for 2020 and a range of Christmas cards if you are able to support your Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Diary prices are held again at £4 and also Christmas cards are £4 per pack of 10.

With no Government or Lottery direct funding available, £4 million per year has to be found which equates to £3000 per mission (each time the helicopter 'Pegasus' is called into operation) so any support you can give is vital. Your Air Ambulance is operational now for 19 hours per day (7:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m.) and we also have a Critical Care Car available. From the airbase at


Henstridge the helicopter can be at any point throughout Dorset & Somerset within 20 minutes and then, if required, take a patient to the nearest Major Trauma Centre in the South West within a further 20 minutes. New Advertising Treasurer Required

The time it might take

1-2 hours per week, but with additional work from time to time. The time it takes does vary. Most months it's about an hour a week, but when sending out annual invoices it can take a day to get them all written, checked and sent out. The months where there are a lot of invoices to send out take more time, so mostly it's the ad-hoc adverts at other points in the year.

The skills required

An aptitude for figures, basic computer skills, email, on-line banking and an organised mind. Putting the annual financial information together has to be done in a specific way, but it's overlooked by a financial specialist anyway.

Initial training and support from the existing treasurer will be available.

Piddletrenthide and Plush Fete

Thank you to everyone who came to our fete back in June, we enjoyed fantastic weather. Once again we had record numbers on the gate. We would like to thank all our stall holders and helpers, without whom it would not be possible. We had lots of donations, and the generosity for the silent auction was fantastic. We are delighted to say we raised just over £6,000, which is up on last year! It was lovely to have the school children singing and to see so many families enjoying the day. I would like to say thank you to James Boughey for his generosity and for providing us with such a lovely setting for this event. Piddletrenthide Lunch Club

Lunch Club meets once a month in the Memorial Hall, Piddletrenthide. There is no Lunch Club in November as the Christmas lunch will take place on Friday 13th December at 12.30 pm.

Our recent visit to Normandy was a great success. We spent three days in Longueville and were welcomed with great generosity and warmth. One highlight of the weekend was a coach trip to the Suisse Normandie..... a beautiful inland region, with lakes and wooded hills. Of course, the main purpose of our visit was to spend time with our French friends and experience life in their homes, all of which we appreciated wholeheartedly. We hope to welcome some younger families from the Valley to the Twinning in the future.... there is so much to learn and enjoy in a real French community that may not be available on school trips or family holidays. Hello. The combination of low humidity and increased contrast at this time of year, means that dark, sparkly winter skies really bring out the best in open star clusters. By the beginning of November, the Pleiades star cluster will be a prominent sight in the early evening eastern sky. Although often referred to as the ‘Seven Sisters’ the cluster is actually home to over 1000 stars, lying


around 400 light years away in the constellation of Taurus. Most people, with average eyesight should be able to discern 7-11 individual stars with the naked eye, but when viewed with a pair of binoculars, this figure will jump well into the dozens. It’s well worth a look!

By the end of November, that other well-known star cluster in Taurus, the Hyades, will be high enough to observe. Containing hundreds of stars, and lying only around 150 light years away, this is another fantastic binocular object. Incidentally, the bright red giant Aldebaran, which represents the eye of Taurus the bull, isn’t actually part of the Hyades cluster, but is much closer, and merely situated in the line of sight.

No discussion on the subject of open star clusters would be complete without mention of the Double Cluster in the constellation of Perseus, high in the northeast from the beginning of November. Much older than both the Pleiades and Hyades, and, at around 7500 light years distance, much further, too, the Double Cluster is a fantastic sight in binoculars, but really shines when viewed in a telescope.

Finally, if that’s not enough, there are three more fantastic OCs coming to the early evening November skies: Messiers 36, 37 and 38, in the constellation of Auriga. All three can be found with binoculars, but all are best viewed at higher magnifications. M37, in particular, is the brightest and most impressive of the three.

As for the planets, Jupiter will be setting around 6pm at the beginning of November, and will be gone from the evening skies by the end of the month. Saturn will continue to linger low in the south in the early part of the month, but it, too, will soon depart the evening skies for this year, Venus, Mars and Mercury won’t be visible for some time, and that leaves only Uranus and Neptune for evening observations. Whilst I enjoy observing the outer planets, they don’t compete with Jupiter and Saturn for scale and detail.

There is something very exciting to look out for in November, planet-wise, and that’s a transit of Mercury on the 11th. Starting around 12.30 pm, Mercury will pass in front of the Sun. I witnessed the last transit of Mercury back in 2016, and it’s a definite must-see. Caution! Don’t ever look directly at the sun unless using astronomy-grade solar filters/equipment!

The Moon: November’s First quarter moon is on the 4th, Full Moon is on the 12th, Last quarter is on the 19th, and New Moon is on the 26th.

Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch (CSW)

Residents will perhaps have noticed an increased Dorset Police presence in the valley over the past few months - this is due to the number of complaints made by local residents about speeding traffic and the increased volume/speed of tractor & trailers.

Two of their officers joined our CSW session on 26 July opposite the Piddle Valley school, and gave out advice to drivers who were exceeding the speed limit, not wearing seat belts, or were using mobile ‘phones whilst driving - a photo of these activities was shown on the Dorset Police “No Excuse” facebook page :-

Ironman 2019

On a wet Sunday 20th September morning over 2,500 cyclists once again rode through the Piddle Valley on the second leg of the Weymouth 70.3 Ironman event. This is the fourth year in succession that the event has been held.

The initial 2016 event included a long 140mile cycling option which required road closures for most of the day and caused excessive traffic disruption. As a result in subsequent years the event has been shortened to a total of 70.3 miles so the roads are just closed in the morning for around 4-5 hours. Ironman boosts the Weymouth economy, participants raise money for charity, and it’s a sporting challenge that many enjoy watching or doing. But, how is it received in the Piddle Valley?

In the last three years very few complaints have been made to the Parish Council, but concerns have been raised about:

1) Road closures preventing car use on a Sunday morning and not varying the route to share the road closure inconvenience.

2) The lack of notice to those who need to travel at that time for business or health reasons, and

3) The financial cost with no apparent compensation, particularly when there are over 2,500 entrants paying £250+ each.

The responses to these comments have been:

1) The roads are closed for safety reasons and an established route makes organisation more efficient and safer in terms of public communication.

2) Ironman has been responsive to requests to arrange transport and tries to contact health workers and businesses to sort out difficulties. The essential thing is two-way communication and this should improve year on year as more information is accumulated, particularly with an established route.

3) Ironman 70.3 is a commercial event, and paying compensation to all would not be possible, but Ironman does need local assistance and is willing to make donations for this.

This year the Parish Council, following discussions with Ironman, made the Piddlehinton Village Hall available as a refuge for cyclists in case of bad weather, and received £300 for local use. In addition, Ironman asked if we could organise volunteers to act as marshals in 2020, which would also produce funds for the Piddle Valley. Many people enjoy Ironman, so perhaps some would like to volunteer to be a marshal. If so, please send a message to the Parish Council ([email protected]) and we will talk to Ironman to see what can be arranged.

Ironman is enjoyed by thousands, is an irritant to some, but seems to be here to stay. We should do what we can to make it mutually acceptable and successful, and to be a happy day for those visiting the Piddle Valley. The Parish Council has previously organised meetings with Ironman and we have arranged for the current race director, Mr Dean Smith, to come to the January meeting to discuss the 2020 event. So please come along for the democratic period if you wish to raise any issues (28th Jan, 7:30pm, Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall).

The Flu clinic dates are published on our website and in the Surgery. We would like to encourage all those who are eligible to take up the opportunity to have the flu vaccine Christmas & New Year Opening Times The surgery will be open as usual apart from the following days, when we are closed: Christmas Day Wednesday 25th December 2019 Boxing Day Thursday 26th December 2019 New Year’s Day Thursday 1st s January 2020 If you are unwell while the surgery is closed, ring NHS 111. They will take details of your condition and direct you straight away to the local service that can help you best.



Food bank donations

This time last year we began collecting donations of non-perishable food items such as soup, pasta and rice to donate to the local food bank. I have been asked to pass a sincere thank you from the food bank organisers for your continued generosity, the response has been overwhelming! We do plan to continue collecting donations at the surgery. All donations are gratefully received

Those of you who visit the surgery will have noticed that we have appointed two new receptionists. Our new staff (both called Emily) are settling in well and I’m sure will provide the same level of care and professionalism as the rest of our team. The new staff have partly been appointed to replace Caroline our longest serving receptionist: she is embarking on a new chapter in her life but will hopefully be back to help out during holiday times. We have also appointed Sarah, a new dispenser, to replace Julie who has also recently left the surgery. As the nights are drawing in our thoughts turn to Christmas. Our dispensary manager would like to remind you that we are only closed for 2 days and has requested that patients do not order more than their usual medication. December is already our busiest month and over-ordering your medication makes it even more challenging for the team. Also, if you have multiple items please only order the items you need, rather than asking for everything on your repeat. Thank you. Finally, we have had a new phone system installed at the end of October. Hopefully this will make it easier for our patients and our staff. Hopefully there won’t be any teething problems in the first few weeks! Crossways Travel Company Crossways Travel celebrated their 10-year anniversary on September 22nd in Weymouth Centenary Club with a free buffet, a glass of wine, entertainment and of course their 2020 Holiday Brochure Launch. The turnout far surpassed the organisers' expectation with nearly 400 guests making time to come and wish them happy birthday. It was a fantastic evening and they also had a charity auction raising funds for local charity Mosaic. Crossways Travel, set up by Kadi and Matt Crocker, initially started out as a small community group offering days out from the local villages. The company has now become well respected within the tour industry and offers a large range of fully escorted day excursions and European and UK holidays with pickups all around Dorset offering a truly personal touch.
