and Family
With the precision & certainty of the rising sun, Rotary’s annual ebb & flow of leaders has completed yet another cycle! Our yearly change brings relief & a well-deserved rest for outgoing officers with a renewal of purpose for new leadership. Rotary Year 2009 – 2010 was a success on many fronts thanks to the dedicated vision of now Past District Governor Alan Walters. Alan and his team perpetuated District 7770’s passion for local, district and International Service. Our Clubs completed countless community service projects using almost $90,000 in District Simplified Grants, participated in training events, and shared memorable moments @ the District Conference in Myrtle Beach. On the International front, seven Matching Grants provided funding in excess of $300,000 supplying water, medical supplies, health/hygiene and hope for thousands. Alan closed the year on a high note eclipsing the $1,000,000 mark in Foundation Giving to the Annual Programs Fund & Polio combined! DG’s Update Con’t on Page 3
Pictures from installation gatherings across District 7770 are featured this month,

DG’s Update Con’t:
A few pictures of 2009-2010 DG Alan & his family “Rescuing Strays” @ Daniel Island’s Duck Race held in June.
Rotary Year 2010 – 2011 began with several significant Fellowship events.
First, many District 7770 Rotarians attended the International Convention in
Montreal where we had a final opportunity to celebrate the
accomplishments of the 2009 – 2010 Rotary Year. Below Brain & Alison
Johnson, Robb Rosol, Vicki Tatum, Eddie & Walker Buxton along with Ann &
I take a brief moment from the strenuous agenda for a photo.
Our District manned a booth at
the Montreal Convention
highlighting the incredible work
performed by Water Missions International in conjunction with Rotary. Many
thanks to Brad Reed & Bob Wood (Daniel Island), Stan Cahn (Hilton Head
Sunset), Chappy Chapman & Eddie Buxton(Charleston Breakfast) , Robb Rosol
(St. Andrews), Mabel Williams (Lake Marion @ Santee), Ann Hurst
(Orangeburg) for their participation.
Upon return from Montreal, Club Installations were the primary order of business.
Summerville (Lunch) was the first stop where Kelly Williams took the helm from Sean Bennett with able guidance from
Assistant Governor Don Nye. Although Rotary International is unable to confirm, District 7770 has what we assume is a
first. Skip Williams (Kelly’s husband) is serving as President of the Summerville Evening Club. No record exists of a wife &
husband serving simultaneously as President of two Clubs in the same Rotary Year. We will simply claim it has another
first for our District!
St. Andrews (Charleston) conducted their Installation on June 25th in the Cooper River Room @ Mt. Pleasant Memorial
Park & a grand time was had by all. In a moment of sheer terror, President Robb Rosol & Assistant Governor Gene
Pardee both wore a tie at the same time! Robb’s Board is ready for another year of Community Service coupled with the
best BBQ in District 7770.
On June 29th, Catherine Watkins was installed as President of Sumter Sunrise. Yes,
Isaac Carr (Past President) is smiling because he knows Catherine will continue
the fine traditions of their Club & his email Inbox will now have extra space!
Carolina Forest held their Installation on June 30th @ Coastal Carolina. Club President Ellison Smith is shown receiving his
pin and his capable & dedicated Board is depicted in the second photo
Conway’s Installation was conducted on July 1, 2010. Incoming President Shannon Jordan enjoys the moment with her
Assistant Governor Elizabeth Smith & immediate Past President Tom Brown. Steve Perry added to his multiple Paul
Harris collection during the Installation & was fined for wearing inappropriate colors. He obviously did not receive the
memo that ORANGE is the official color in Rotary Year 2010-2011!
St. George Rotary celebrated their Installation at the Gatherings on July 15th. Outgoing President Mack Tyner (left) is
shown with 2010 – 2011 President Grady Jones. I know many Gamecock fans were wondering if I would ever wear the
“Official Jacket (clearly not my best color)!
Ending the Installation parade was the Grand Finale for Eddie Buxton (President - Charleston Breakfast) & me in
Charleston. Past Rotary International Director David Michaux conducted the ceremony with many thanks to all in
attendance making it a special evening.
Our training is complete and the ship has left the dock with much gratitude for those who served before us. We have
charted a course of “Building Communities/Bridging Continents.” The journey is long, but the benefits to those around
us make this a worthwhile passage!
Yours in Rotary Service, Rick

HAMPTON – The Rotary Club of Hampton County selected a
dedicated firefighter as its choice for the 2010 Citizen of the
Year and a devoted pastor as Rotarian of the Year. The group
chose Town of Hampton Fire Chief Wade Freeman as Citizen of
the Year and Rev. Jack Bailey as Rotarian of the Year. Freeman
has served this community for close to 47 years. He both
thanked and praised Rotary. “This was a shock to me, and I
can’t thank Rotary enough,” he said. “What I do for my
community, you do the same.” Freeman is celebrating his 47th
year with the Hampton Fire Department, and his 37th as fire
chief. “I started serving my community at the age of 18,” he added. “I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done, and it has helped me
in a lot of ways.” Freeman is also the owner of a local insurance agency, the Freeman Agency. He and his wife, Sylvia,
reside in Hampton. Rotarian of the Year Rev. Jack Bailey is leaving the Hampton club this week after two exemplary
years of service. “Since joining your club, I’ve found out how truly worldwide Rotary is,” said Bailey. “It’s been an honor
to serve and I pray God’s blessings on all your future endeavors. You’ve done great work while I was here, and I expect
that will continue well into the future.” Bailey and his wife, Joyce, are moving back to his hometown Charleston. A
pastor for 12 years, including the last three in the Hampton and Varnville Charge of the United Methodist Church, he will
now serve as a pastor for three small churches in the Ridgeville area. Bailey says that as soon as he gets settled in he
hopes to find a new club to join in the Charleston area. After the awards presentation outgoing club president Chad
Westendorf passed the gavel to the newly-sworn 2010-11 President Hank Foy. “This is my last time standing before you
as President,” said Westendorf. “It’s been a great year and I’ve really enjoyed working with everyone.”
This year the Rotary Club organized and sponsored the Watermelon Festival Mud Runs, which were a huge success and
garnered in excess of $3,000 for the club. These funds will go toward a local match for a proposed $6,000 Rotary District
Simplified Grant to be used for the purchase of new computers for the Hampton County Library System.
