Pic-Nic is a groundbreaking blueprint for social networking which addresses a currently untapped niche in the creative community. It has been devised and is led by social

entrepreneur Pete Lawrence, the founder of the successful Cooking Vinyl record label and Big Chill festivals. It is targeted principally at people involved in the creative

industries, whether as professionals or as leisure activists. Some of the things Pic-Nic aims to do are:

• Build and develop a vibrant virtual Village, inspired and directed by its members

• Provide a co-operative and inspirational environment where people can meet, share experiences and work on their business projects and creative interests

• Offer every member an opportunity to develop their artistic and entrepreneurial potential via bespoke portfolio-based microsites

• Provide shop-front capabilities to allow members to generate income

• Pioneer future directions for creative business – with all the essential networking features and none of the overheads of an office

• Become a social hub with physical events and a strong offline presence

• Create the Pic-Nic Foundation to nurture and provide financial support for creative ventures

It will do this through an integrated suite of capabilities which encourage communication, co-operation and collaboration. A demonstration of these capabilities can be

provided on request.

Access to the full range of functionality on the site will be charged to users on a subscription fee, to be introduced at a significant stage of the development. Free access will

also be available, but to a limited subset of the features.

These defining characteristics of Pic-Nic reflect the invaluable experiences gained by Pete in his pioneering and critically-acclaimed work in the multimedia and

entertainments businesses, especially with respect to his role as the architect of the successful Big Chill festivals and lifestyle brand. It is clear that there exists a large, poorly-supported demographic who are actively engaged in the creative industries, are brand-aware trendsetters and tastemakers, are seeking intelligent creative

discourse, understand and accept the basic premise of subscription-based online services (e.g. Soundcloud, Spotify), are wary of commercial interests impacting on their social networking experiences, and are concerned about privacy issues whilst at the same time strongly motivated to engage in productive creative endeavours.

With his established public profile in this sector, Pete is uniquely positioned to drive forward a venture which capitalises on these needs and provides a platform for their development.

founder

A Playground of Possibilities

Pic-Nic is the latest venture for Pete Lawrence, who fronted his Big Chill festival and lifestyle concept between 1994 and 2007. The Big Chill was an early example of the strength of word-of-mouth marketing, growing from 600 people in 1995 to around 30,000 by 2006, setting a new agenda for festivals in the UK. The attention to detail, idyllic rural locations and nurturing of a loyal online community created a blueprint for the ‘boutique’ festival experience, which spawned many imitators and garnered praise from a wide variety of commentators. “Perhaps the most amazing and ambitious club ever devised “ - Time Out.

Pete was first recognised as a respected tastemaker in the mid 1980s when he spontaneously recorded US folk singer Michelle Shocked on a walkman around a Texas campfire for his fledgling Cooking Vinyl label. The resulting album ‘The Texas Campfire Tapes’, with its £1 ‘field recording’ budget, went on to top the Independent album charts in 1987 and sell half a million copies.

Subsequently Pete became a writer, radio DJ, journalist and music programmer, working with over 3000 artists and giving early exposure to such names as Lily Allen, Goldfrapp, Amy Winehouse, Seasick Steve and Zero 7. In 2006, Pete was voted into Time Out’s Top 100 ‘movers and shakers’, alongside the likes of Ricky Gervais, Gordon Ramsay, Madonna, Sir Philip Green, Brian Paddick, Ken Livingstone and Tony Blair.

“Pete Lawrence has a knack for being just a few key steps ahead of everyone else. When he started Cooking Vinyl, he didn't follow trends but anticipated them.More so when it came to creating The Big Chill, the event that set the stage for what became an international chillout music movement that lasts to this day. Along with all this is an ethic that works towards collaboration, bringing people together and networking. I am not alone in looking keenly forward to Pic-Nic Village. With such a track record, You can be sure whatever he does will be worthy of interest. And maybe, yet again, emulation.” Gerald Seligman, Director of WOMEX 2006-9 and advisor to the UNESCO Creative Cities initiative.

“Pete Lawrence is a legend. In addition to his notinconsiderable DJing & producer skills, he has a gift for bringing together lovely people and creating something really special.” Mr Scruff, DJ and Tea Magnate.

“I’ve known Pete Lawrence since the mid-1980s and have always wondered just how he keeps so ahead of the game. There seems little doubt he’ll keep on doing it.”Mark Ellingham, founder Rough Guides and Publisher of Sort Of Books.

“Pete is a natural force and I await his next move with excitement.” Matt Black, Techno geek and co-founder of Ninja Tune and Coldcut.

“Pete is a natural born connector of people far and wide – never following, always leading from the alternative frontline. I look forward to what Pete's next new exciting venture has in store for us.” Danny Rampling, international DJ and founder of the UK club

“Pete's ability to predict our cultural and media future were brilliantly manifested by the success of the Big Chill. It is a pleasure to recognise him as the inventor of such a major movement as the chill out scene. His cultural impact has crossed all international borders and is still in style worldwide. Over the years I've always looked to Pete for his profound knowledge of all things cool and elegant. His massive fan base of tastemakers also reflects his quiet sense of integrity. Pete has always led the way, and many of us joyously follow him. He is a genuine visionary who has had a colossal impact on us all.” Erica Ruben, Former Executive Producer of Central Park SummerStage, New York.
