Editorial

Dear Music Lovers,

To adapt a phrase from Gertrude Stein: is a piano a piano a piano? Certainly not, as our Piano Festival has been proving every year since it began in 1998. Even if the instrument itself remains the same, a single, isolated note will sound complete-ly different depending on whether it’s a layperson or a professional who is striking the keys. And just think of how big the differences are between the “cracks,” so to speak – between the master pianists of our time! Not to mention the variety of ways and nuances of playing. At the keyboard you can sing or bang away, you can caress the notes, play pearl-like scales, produce a crisp or richly resonant sound, make the performance hall quiver with powerful fortissimos or flirt with the edge of audibility.Thirteen classical pianists are on our roster for 2016, as well as jazz artists and a dazzling organist. They will together illustrate the rich world of keyboard artistry. Grigory Sokolov, Maria João Pires, Murray Perahia, and Rudolf Buchbinder are the grand masters we have in store: artists who have triumphed for decades on stages around the globe. Igor Levit meanwhile leads the pack of those under 30: in spite of his youth, he already ranks among the most highly sought-after performers in the field. And our lineup of pianists debuting at the Festival includes Louis Schwizgebel, Andrew Tyson, and Kit Armstrong, who are all headed for highly promising future careers. Lars Vogt will enchant us from the keyboard accompanying a program of chamber music, while Cameron Carpenter, the one-of-a-kind wizard of the organ from America, will ignite veritable fireworks when he shows off his international touring organ. During the Day of the Keyboard we will get to know more closely the secrets of the Russian School of pianism. And late evenings remain the time to indulge in the finest piano jazz “off-stage.”Everything is set to ensure a grand celebration of the art of the piano! We look for-ward to seeing you at our keyboard summit in late fall.

Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL

In 2016 the Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL celebrates its 50th anniversary!

Since its founding in 1966, the Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL has made supporting the work of one of the world’s most renowned classical music festivals its goal. The moral and financial support that is obtained through this non-profit organization is invaluable for LUCERNE FESTIVAL. The contributions made by the Friends amount to approximately eight percent of the total budget, thereby contrib-uting significantly to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. Since, aside from this funding source, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is mainly supported by private and cor-porate sponsors and receives only a small contribution in the form of subsidy from the public sector, the Friends have become an indispensable partner of the Festival. But not only is supporting the Festival of today a matter of central concern: they also hope to create a sustainable basis for the artistic activity of tomorrow – through fos-tering such important projects as the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and LUCERNE FESTIVAL YOUNG.

The circle of the Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL offers you an opportunity to share in the experience of the Festival in all its variety and to deepen your musical experi-ence through such exclusive events as artist meet-and-greets and visits to rehearsals; through the Friends you can moreover make contact with an interesting and interna-tional group of like-minded peers.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL is grateful to all of its Friends for their long-standing and loyal support. We would especially like to thank our following patrons:

Georgy Tchaidze piano

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Children’s Album, Op. 39Sergei Rachmaninoff Four Études tableaux from Op. 33Sergei Prokofiev Piano Sonata No. 8 in B-flat major, Op. 84

The Day of the Keyboard included in this year’s Piano Festival takes us on a trip to Russia led by three young piano stars, all of whom were born in the former Soviet Union and influenced by the Russian Piano School. Nat-urally they will play Russian repertoire. First up is Geor-gy Tchaidze, who studied in Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, and Berlin and who won Canada’s Honens Competition in 2009 as well as the Top of the World Piano Com-petition in Tromsø, Norway, in 2015. He has long been at home in the ma-jor concert halls around the world: Carnegie Hall in New York, the Con-certgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Konzerthaus, and London’s Wigmore Hall. “Fine sensibility and perfectly honed technique,” wrote The Daily Telegraph. For his first Lucerne ap-pearance Tchaidze will demonstrate that Russian pia-nism has more to offer than immense technique. Which is why he begins with Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album, with its marching toy soldiers, dolls, and witches, be-fore kicking into high gear with Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev.

The Day of the Keyboard Package: Attend all three Day of the Keyboard recitals for a total ticket price of CHF 120 (instead of CHF 150). See the ticket order form.

Grigory Sokolov piano

Robert Schumann Arabesque in C major, Op. 18 | Fantasy in C major, Op. 17 Additional program details will be published at a later date.

Grigory Sokolov is a mystery. He is an artist who doesn’t follow the latest trends or marketing ploys, disdains giving interviews, keeps his private life to himself – and

yet he is the ultimate cult pianist of our time. He refuses to talk about music, yet his playing reveals infinite-ly more about the works than words ever could express. For a period of six months he performs the exact same program, night after night; but it never becomes boring to him, for at each concert the pieces sound dif-ferent and fresh. And yet Sokolov will not attribute this “success” to him-self. Rather, he believes that it is the

listeners who seek to understand and know the artists and the music better and better. For him, the secret of performance relies therefore not only on the performer – the recipient has an equal share in it. What better way then to open the 2016 Piano Festival than with a recital by Grigory Sokolov, the incomparable keyboard magi-cian, who wants all of us to share in a blissful artistic experience?

“The Russians Are Coming”

Russian piano music belongs among the highlights of the virtuoso Romantic repertoire, and composers like Tchaikovsky and, somewhat later, Rachmaninoff coaxed from the instrument a rich abundance of sonorities, col-ors, and associations. Alongside this the Russians have

contributed such other masters as the visionary Alexander Scriabin and – in some instances with the claim of essaying a new “objectivity” – Sergei Prokofiev, whose nine sonatas com-prise a treasury of new discoveries and pianistic adventures. Other per-sonalities like Nikolai Medtner, Mili Balakirev, and, finally, the outstand-ing Dmitri Shostakovich complete

the spectrum. Great Russian pianists have knowingly devoted and continue to devote themselves to this chal-lenge with gusto. The range spans from Gilels and Rich-ter to Pletnev, Boris Beresowski, Lilya Zilberstein, and Daniil Trifonov and is being carried forward by young talents with spirit and with a sense of the joy of playing. This series offers an overview of works and performanc-es with significant examples (but also some surprising ones) from the concert hall and the studio.

Alexei Gorlatch piano

Frédéric Chopin Polonaise-Fantaisie, Op. 61 | Mazurkas, Op. 67, nos. 2 and 4 | Mazurkas, Op. 68, nos. 1–4 Sergei Prokofiev The Montagues and the Capulets from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 75Igor Stravinsky Piano Sonata in F-sharp minorFrédéric Chopin Scherzo No. 2 in B minor, Op. 31

When Alexei Gorlatch first played at LUCERNE FESTI-VAL in November 2013, he wowed the audience with his highly poetic and pianistically flawless performance of the fiendishly difficult Op. 10 Etudes by Frédéric Chopin. Now he returns as part of the Day of the Keyboard line-up. Born in 1988 in Kiev, Gorlatch will play a delectable series of Chopin pieces on this program, but the focus will be on two Russian composers, Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky. You can look forward to a genuine discovery with Stravinsky’s early So-nata in F-sharp minor, a rarely heard work by the 21-year-old composer that doesn’t yet sound like Stravinsky but is more reminiscent of Russian Romanticism, calling to mind such models as Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Kor-sakov, and Glazunov. But the finale makes use of a refrain-like theme that strikingly anticipates Joseph Schmidt’s Ein Lied geht um die Welt (“A Song Goes Round the World”) – though it was composed thirty years be-fore the famous hit. A truly pleasurable musical menu!

The Day of the Keyboard Package: Attend all three Day of the Keyboard recitals for a total ticket price of CHF 120 (instead of CHF 150). See the ticket order form.

Oriental Fantasy for Piano

A stroll through a century of Russian music history is what Nareh Arghamanyan will undertake during this year’s Day of the Keyboard, which is dedicated com-

pletely to the Russian School of piano artistry. The pianist, who was born in 1989 in Armenia (then part of the Soviet Union), hearkens back to the Founding Father with Michail Glinka and then covers a range through the Mighty Handful (represented by Mili Balakirev) and late Romanticism (Sergei Rachmaninoff and Nikolai Medtner) to the visionaries Igor Stra-

vinsky and Alexander Scriabin. The fact that this also happens to include some of the most virtuoso work in the piano literature is no surprise when you encounter the dexterity and stunning technical command of this pianist. She is “a genuine whirlwind of power and spir-it,” as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes.

Johann Sebastian Bach Prelude and Fugue for Organ in B minor, BWV 544 | French Suite No. 5 in G major, BWV 816* | Contrapunctus 9 a 4 alla Duodecima from The Art of the Fugue, BWV 1080* | Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582Olivier Messiaen Dieu parmi nous from La Nativité du SeigneurRobert Schumann Study for Pedal Piano in A-flat major, Op. 56, no. 4Franz Liszt Funérailles, S 173, no. 7*Alexander Scriabin Piano Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp major, Op. 30** arranged for organ by Cameron Carpenter

Whenever the organ is the topic, it tends to conjure images of churches and pious chorales. Cameron Car-penter, an American born in 1981, clears away all such preconceptions. He performs not only the great organ repertoire but arranges works from other genres for his instrument, even something of the order of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. And he masters the pedals with such virtuoso, balletic elegance as to evoke Olympic sport. No surprise, then, that along with his music studies Carpenter has a degree in dance. The latter no doubt comes in handy when he’s playing the pedals, which, as he notes, is a skill that shares something with tap dancing. Since 2014 Carpen-ter has hardly performed in churches but instead plays on his own high-tech instrument, the International Touring Organ, which he positions at the center of the podium in the con-cert hall so that everyone in the audience can admire the visual effect of his playing – not to mention his out-rageous outfits.

Before his recital Cameron Carpenter will introduce children and youths into his organ world through a workshop. Applica-tions should be made to [email protected].

Andreas Müller-Crepon host

There’s the major key, and there’s the minor. And there are blue notes, which introduce an ambiguous twist into the clear harmonic distinction between major and minor. It’s to these blue notes that Piano Off-Stage, the small but fine jazz festival within the Festival, is dedicat-ed. Eight international improvisers give a total of forty performances over five evenings, seeing to it that the music continues long after the final applause in the KKL

has faded. Off-Stage takes place in Lucerne’s finest bars and restaurants – turning the whole city into a stage. Such old friends as the Zurich pia-nist and singer Christina Jaccard and the German boogie-woogie virtuoso Frank Muschalle will be there, and so will newcomers like the Italian Luca Filastro, one of the most promising talents of stride piano. Stroll through Lucerne’s bars and listen to an exqui-

site set of piano jazz while enjoying a drink. And before it all starts tomorrow, you can get an overview tonight of the complete lineup of Off-Stage artists at the grand opening in the KKL.

The overview of all Piano Off-Stage concerts can be found on pp. 30-31.

Louis Schwizgebel piano

Robert Schumann Kinderszenen, Op. 15Ludwig van Beethoven 32 Variations on an Original Theme in C minor, WoO 80Franz Schubert Piano Sonata in C minor, D. 958

He has been called “a fiery spirit with depth” by the trade magazine FonoForum. The pianist Louis Schwiz-gebel, who was born in 1987 into a Swiss-Chinese fam-ily in Geneva, was already traveling across half of the globe during his training: to Pascal Devoyon in Berlin, Emanuel Ax at the Juilliard School in New York, and Pascal Nemirovski at the Royal Academy of Music in Lon-don. When he was 17, Schwizgebel won the Concours de Genève, and, in 2007, the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York; he took sec-ond prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012. The BBC named him a New Generation Artist, presenting him at numerous concerts from 2013 to 2015. And such ensembles as the London Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony, and the Orchestre National de Lyon have engaged him as a soloist. For his LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut Schwizgebel will therefore practically be playing a home match. His smartly designed program shows that he’s interested in a good deal more than mere vir-tuosity.

The level of unanimity on display at the 2015 Concours Géza was rare. After ten days and four rounds in which 27 young pianists vied for the jury’s favor, one of them won out big time. The American Andrew Tyson, who was born in 1986 in Majorham, North Carolina, was not only the winner of the competition but also garnered both the audience prize and the Mozart prize. For Ty-son, though, this was merely the con-tinuation of a long list of successes that also includes the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York, the Ar-thur Rubinstein Prize in Piano, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In his homeland he has already concertized with several orchestras of distinction, and now, after his triumph in Zurich, it’s Europe’s turn. In the first half of 2016, Tyson made his debuts with the Bamberg Symphony, the Moscow Virtuosi, and the SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Or-chestra. And now comes his debut in Lucerne, with a program that has a heavily Spanish flavor.

Igor Levit piano

Johann Sebastian Bach Aria with 30 Variations BWV 988 Goldberg Variations

“What will this piano-mad artist do next?” wondered the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) when Igor Levit last fall performed two absolute milestones of the rep-ertoire, Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Beethoven’s Dia- belli Variations, together with a pianistic tour de force by Frederic Rzewski, all forming a massive triptych. But

from the start Levit, who was born in 1987 in Nizhny Novgorod and who has resided in Germany since 1995, was someone who did the unusual. His very first CD, which was released in 2013, already took on one of the summits of the piano literature: the five last sonatas by Beethoven. Levit sets no boundaries. He performs as a soloist with the major orchestras, plays chamber music with colleagues

like the violinist Julia Fischer and the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, accompanies lieder, gives piano lec-tures, and sometimes improvises with jazz colleagues. He recently performed the Goldberg Variations in New York as part of a project with the performance artist Marina Abramović. But in Lucerne he will present pure Bach, incomparably played “with a crystal clear, vocally saturated sound” (FAZ).

Franz Schubert Overture in D major, D. 590 In the Italian StyleRobert Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54Felix Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 Scottish

“Music is the truth about the world that we do not know.” What a statement! It comes from Maria João Pires, the grande dame of piano playing. For her it’s

never about mere surface charm but instead always comes down to the es-sence of the works she plays, whose depths she knows how to explore like few others. “First we have to listen to what the music has to say and to-tally forget ourselves,” is her artistic credo. “It’s about having a conver-sation with the composer.” And this time she will enter into dialogue with Robert Schumann: a master of

hidden messages, to whose works she feels especially drawn. She will join with the British conductor Trevor Pinnock, a longtime musical partner and confidant, to perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Whoever has had the pleasure of hearing the two of them together – whether with the Berlin Philharmonic or the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie – knows that this combination guarantees incandescent music-making.

How many “child prodigies” actually succeed in making it in music? Most of them are hyped and then almost as soon forgotten. This fate might have even happened to Kit Armstrong when he began his meteoric ascent in 2008, at the age of 16. No less than the judicious Alfred Brendel praised him as “the greatest musical talent I have encountered in my entire life,” and the marketing machine was soon spinning in high gear. But Armstrong, an American with Taiwanese roots who speaks perfect German, who completed a degree in mathematics, and who composes, resisted all temptations. He refused to sign questionable re-cord deals and agree to shady agency offers so that he could take his time to develop further. He gave only a limited number of concerts of the most demanding repertoire, immersing himself deeply, and with humility, in the great piano literature. With the result that today he ranks among the most unusual and interesting performers. Listen for yourself !

Ludwig van Beethoven Overture to the Ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43 | Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 | Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37

“I never wanted to become a pianist,” Murray Perahia confesses, “but rather a musician. As complete a mu-sician as possible.” Which is why he began very early not just to train his fingers on the piano’s 88 keys but to study the works he was playing thoroughly, learning about their compositional structures, their genesis, and their stylistic features. As a conductor and pianist united in one, especially when collaborating with the

Academy of St Martin in the Fields, with whom he is associated as Prin-cipal Guest Conductor, Perahia has found his true fulfillment. Whenever he performs Beethoven concertos with this ensemble, the philosophy and poetry of music are therefore also at the center. “Beethoven is like Shakespeare,” says Perahia, referring to the encompassing greatness of the classical genius. And he suggests the secret of interpretation with a bon mot by Chopin’s teacher Józef Elsner:

“A craftsman sets stone upon stone and at the end sees a house. An artist sees the house first and then seeks out the stones.”

“Alfred Brendel. Musician and Human Being”

On 5 January of this year, maestro Alfred Brendel cele-brated his 85th birthday – as powerful and fresh as ever and with the wink of a philosopher who is equally at-tuned to the serious and the unseri-ous, and not just in music. Which is reason enough to portray this out-standing pianist and musician in a way that demonstrates his many lev-els of skill and achievement as an art-ist and as a human being. Brendel’s performances of the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert have shaped how we listen to and think about their music in different and new ways. The young, sometimes impetuously thrilling Brendel will also be explored, as will a bit of his work as a poet and writer who has trans-ferred the rhythm of music into language. This promises to be an entertaining event.

Johannes Brahms Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 | Piano Trio in B major, Op. 8 | Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60

He is the “Mister Chamber Music” of pianists. What other colleagues regard as “the loveliest thing to pur-sue on the side” is for Lars Vogt the focus of his cre-ative work: joining together in small ensembles to play the inexhaustible world of duo sonatas, trios, quartets, and quintets. For almost twenty years, amid the idyllic Eiffel hills in Heimbach, he has been holding his own chamber music festival, known as the “Spannungen” – a name with a hidden meaning (in German it signifies both excitement and voltage), since the concerts take place in a former hydroelectric power plant. And there will be pure electricity indeed when Vogt joins with the violinist Veronika Eberle, the violist Florian Donderer, and the cellist Tanja Tetzlaff to per-form three masterpieces by Johannes Brahms. Even when he was young, Brahms was one of his “great he-roes,” Vogt once declared: “The Nor-dic-tinged harmonies and the melan-choly that is colored by pain which you find in his works are very close to me. Brahms’s music has a tremendous emotionality, intense to the point of bursting, and yet it is all held to-gether through a rational structure. That makes Brahms something very special.”

Rudolf Buchbinder piano

Robert Schumann Fantasie in C major, Op. 17Franz Liszt Paraphrase de concert sur Rigoletto, S 434Robert Schumann Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13

Rudolf Buchbinder is celebrating a milestone birthday – and LUCERNE FESTIVAL celebrates Rudolf Buchbinder. Five days before he turns 70, the Viennese pianist will

give a recital of works by Schumann and Liszt, combining the poetic with the highly virtuosic. For him routine has remained a foreign word, even though his international career be-gan back in the 1960s. Buchbinder has maintained a habit of preparing meticulously, right up to the present. He studies autograph scores or con-sults the widest variety of score edi-

tions to compare them. “Knowledge confers freedom,” he says about his approach, and this freedom enables him, when things get serious in the concert hall, to then act spontaneously. Yet Buchbinder does not believe that his professional life has become easier through all his experiences and successes: “Day by day I become more nervous,” he sighs. “You move the bar higher and high-er. To meet the audience’s expectations is not enough: you have to outdo them.” That is indeed a work ethic.

In collaboration with the Hochschule Luzern – Musik

With some musicians, you have the impression that they could replicate themselves. For instance, Robert Levin. The American is not only a gifted pianist on modern and period instruments alike. He is also a music research-

er, and as such has particularly been involved in investigating the perfor-mance practice of the Classical era and in preparing complete versions of Mozart’s Requiem and C minor Mass. And he is a passionate teacher, as he proved two years ago with his master class in Lucerne. Now he re-turns to share his wisdom and experi-ence once again with selected young

pianists and to guide them in the study of a repertoire ranging from the Baroque to classical Modernism. The results will be insightful for any interested auditors, not just those who play the piano! Admission is of course free for students of the Hochschule Luzern – Musik.

Dates for the Master Class in Piano: Tuesday – Friday, 15 – 18 November | each day 9.30 – 12.30 and 14.00 – 17.00

Just as ice cubes belong in a cocktail, fine piano jazz belongs in a bar. At least it does in late November, during Piano Off-Stage, the annual sideshow of the Lucerne Piano Festival. But what a “sideshow”! Eight inter-nationally acclaimed jazz artists from Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States, and Switzerland come to town to give some forty concerts. They follow the princi-ple of rotation: each evening they change the venue, so that all of the pianists end up performing at every venue. This gives you an opportunity not only to get to know a widely varied range of jazz playing styles but also to sample the breadth of Lucerne’s finest bars and restaurants.

Detailed information about this year’s pianists can be found in the Piano Off-Stage flyer.

The Piano Festival: A Feast for the Senses in the KKL Luzern

Every year in late autumn, LUCERNE FESTIVAL culminates in the KKL Luzern with the Piano Festival, which guarantees pure emotion. And once again this November we look forward to a full nine days long of the master pianists of our time, as well as emerging artists and the extraordinary organist Cameron Carpenter. The Debut series and a matinee of chamber music, along with Piano Off-Stage concerts, which are held late in the evening in Lucerne’s finest bars, round off the Festival.Built by the French architect Jean Nouvel, and featuring the singular acoustical de-sign of Russell Johnson, the Concert Hall in the KKL offers a perfect stage for the Piano Festival: the sounds produced there are distributed in an optimal way throughout the space of the hall, conveying unforgettable sonic experiences along with a feeling of closeness between the pianist and audience – a feeling that is un-paralleled among the world’s concert halls. This results in unique moments of inti-macy, right through to the furthest seats. The KKL Luzern rounds out the Festival’s programs with still further choices. There are treats to discover in the Restaurant RED, which has earned a 15-point Gault- Millau rating, delicious snacks and sparkling drinks in the Seebar, and fresh wok dishes from all over the globe in the World Café. In short: in the KKL Luzern you will find everything to make your evening at the concert an unforgettable culinary experience as well.

I am delighted to welcome you to this gathering of exceptional artists and guests in the KKL Luzern and hope you enjoy exhilarating moments of music making and a beautiful holiday season.

Welcome!

We assemble every single watch twice.Because perfection takes time.

For us, perfection is a matter of principle. This is why, on principle, we craft all timepieces with the same care and assemble each watch twice. Thus, after the Saxonia Moon Phase has been assembled for the first time and precisely adjusted, it is taken apart again. The move-ment parts are cleaned and decorated by hand with finishing and polishing techniques, followed by the final assembly procedure. This assures long-term functional integrity and the immaculacy of all artisanal finishes. Even if this takes a little more time. www.alange-soehne.com
