To the Teacher

These little five-note pieces, for piano four-hands, are arranged so that the pupil can

play either part. They form a suitable course of sight reading in the first grades. Thosewritten in an easy key, and repeated in another, sometimes more difficult, are intended to

accustom the child's ear to distinguish changes of tone-color, besides affording a desirable

readjustment of the hand position. When the fingers have become used to a particular five-

note compass, they learn to find the intervals more readily, and are soon able to play without

the stuttering and halting which destroys the sense of rhythmic continuity, and kills musical

understanding.

My affection for the little German folk-songs, included in this collection, made it a labor

of love to arrange them so that both treble and bass parts could be read with equal facility.

If the children enjoy the reading lesson, my aim will be accomplished.
