Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring mineral fibers that has been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials, friction products, heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings due to its desirable fiber strength and heat resistance. Asbestos is a proven IARC Group 1 human carcinogen, and therefore no safe level can be proposed because a threshold is not known to exist.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were widely used as dielectric and coolant fluids in electrical apparatus, cutting fluids for machining operations, carbon paper, oil based paints, adhesives and tapes, thermal insulation material and in heat transfer fluids. Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils and some groundwater sources. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into buildings through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, and the second leading cause of overall lung cancer cases according to USEPA estimates. According to World Health Organization, radon causes up to 15% of lung cancers worldwide.

Tributyltin (TBT) is a toxic chemical used for various industrial purposes such as slime control in paper mills, disinfection of circulating industrial cooling waters, antifouling agents, and the preservation of wood. Due to its widespread use in antifouling paints to protect the hulls of large ships, it is extremely toxic to non-target aquatic life and is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that causes severe reproductive effects in aquatic organisms. TBT is extremely stable and resistant to natural degradation in water. It can evaporate into the air and be dispersed by rain, causing extensive bioaccumulation to occur in non-aquatic or marine ecosystems.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. Organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in a wide array of products includ-ing paints and lacquers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, office equipment, building materials and furnishings. Recent studies indicate that microbes could also produce substantial amount of VOCs. Therefore concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors, thus potentially causing adverse health effects.
